Definition

Corporate Social Responsibility

In accordance with Section 4 (i) of the Lotteries and Gaming Act No.7, 2017, Corporate Social Responsibility is itemized as participating and contributing to good causes. Different entities have different definitions of CSR but the Board defines CSR as contributing either economically or socially to the sustainable development of the community.

Foreword

Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) is the process of how a company gives back to the Community. Companies may do this through donations to charities and other society activities like sports, health, education or community services. The National Gaming Board (NGB) under Act No 6 of 2016 is mandated to participate and contribute to good causes in accordance with the law. The National Gaming Board has issued a frame work for the implementation of CSR by the operators. This framework identifies a number of different options for CSR in Uganda. These areas are; education, sports, health and community activities. The CSR program is annual by each operator and is a condition for licensing. This report spells out the achievements made in the first year of licensing by each operator. The report shall be a baseline for the CSR activities going forward.

I would like to extend the Board’s gratitude to operators who have been able to implement CSR, we look forward to improving the CSR implementation and promoting of good causes in society.

1.0 INTRODUCTION It has been documented that Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) activities have the capacity to contribute to the macroeconomic development of a developing country through sustainable development to all.

The purpose of this report is to document the contribution of the gaming sector towards the achievement of Uganda’s NDP II through contributions to better health, Education, employment and inclusive growth among others. The report specifies the different activities that were undertaken by the different operators and where these activities were conducted.

This report also contains recommendations that will ensure full participation and effective contribution of the sector to good cause.

2.0 COMPANIES ENGAGED IN CSR IN 2017

Arua Casino T/A Press to win

Arua Casino in 2017 was actively involved in supporting education through partnering with “care for the African kids”, a school located in Gomba district. Through this partnership, Arua Casino contributed building materials, beefed up the library through the provision of books and related scholastic materials to the school, it also provided some scholastic support with provision of shoes and clothing to the disadvantaged students of care for the African kids. Arua Casino has also supported children in different schools through mobilizing a few items from its employees and funds from the public at different collection points.

Audley Limited T/A Pyramids Casino and Kampala Casino Audley casino has been sponsoring 3 students namely Brenda Abalo, Akizimana Trevar Fahim and Terry Muthoni who are in S.5 (St. Cypriano), P.7(St. Francis day and Boarding school Nansana) and Nairobi university respectively.

Betin Uganda Betin sponsored the Golola Vs Lakatos Kickboxing Title fight as shown in the picture below. The fight that was held on the 8th December was Betin's springboard to establish a partnership with the University of Pain that has applied contact sport as a tool to deter the youth from engaging in crime. The total sponsorship value was to a tune of 30 Million that included cash as well as in-kind contribution.

Best Holdings T/A Bet win, Kings Investment Limited T/A Kings Sports Bet, Lucky sports betting, Victory sports betting and Wolf sports betting Best Holdings, Kings Investment Limited, Lucky, Victory and Wolf sports betting are subsidiaries of the Jasani Foundation. Under the Jasani foundation, these companies were engaged in extensive health and education support programmes both at the community and national level. At the national level, the Jasani foundation donated medical equipment to the national referral hospital –Mulago that include computer seats to a tune of UGX. 12 Million as well as weekly distribution of milk to the patients admitted to Mulago Hospital.

At the community level, they donated an ambulance to the community of Busia through their area Member of Parliament. Further to these initiatives, the foundation contributed to the construction and provided medical beds to the community health centers in Mawero, Tiira, Buyengo, Namungodi, & Habuleke within the district of Gulu. As a contribution to the education sector, the foundation constructed classrooms as well as sponsoring 10 children in Namugabu community learning center in Nabugabo. Further to this, it contributed UGX 200 Million to the Dabani schools of nursing.

Blue Cube T/A Kagwirawo Blue Cube Ltd / Kagwirawo did a number of corporate social responsibility (CSR) activities in 2017 as shown below. In January 2017, Kagwirawo renewed Sponsorship with Beach Soccer Club, Kyadondo Galacticos which is based in Kisenyi, Kampala. They have been sponsoring this club since 2014 and offered; -Two sets of Jerseys -Beach soccer Balls and -Facilitation on Match days.

In August 2017, Kagwirawo sponsored the Rotary Cancer Run and offered; - One million in cash to support the cause against cancer -Had four Recorded Adverts on Galaxy 100.2 FM about the fight against cancer and had 2 Interviews on Galaxy 100.2 FM about the Cancer run.

In August, it also partnered with sister company, Galaxy FM 100.2 and organized a football friendly match against Mbuya at Mirambos pitch in Kitintale and did the following; -Played a football match. -Had a community clean up drive. -Talked about anger associated with betting and how to be a responsible bettor. -Offered a ball and entertainment to the youth.

In December 2017, Kagwirawo purchased 500 reflector jackets and gave them out to Boda- boda riders in order to improve their safety. The beneficiaries were riders in Kansanga, Bunga, Salaama Rd and Kabalagala.

On 1st December (World Aids Day), Kagwirawo in partnership with Galaxy FM, announced and conducted free HIV testing and counseling with Alive Medical Services at Blue Cube premises, Plot 249, Ggaba Road

Club Win Uganda Limited T/A Club Win Club Win which trades as Kagwirawo was engaged in Charity driven CSR such as the promotion of community awareness for responsible betting. It achieved this through organizing football matches in the following areas of operations; Luzira, Kitintatle & Kisenyi. Club Win was also involved in charity events like the Rotary Cancer run 2017 and sponsored media campaigns on Galaxy Fm as well as fundraised treatment for Danz Kumapeesa (RIP) a music producer. Club Win also funded a number of musicians’ shows such as; Gravity Omutujju (Tujjuze Cricket Oval), Kenzo, Maro, MunG.

Eldorado Donated sports equipment to “On the Ball Uganda” NGO. They also donated footballs, netballs, rugby balls, jerseys, and volleyballs to 40 orphans in Nazareth orphanage in Masaka District. In addition to the above, they donated funds to 22 primary students at Cleveland primary school in Fortportal municipality through “On the Ball Uganda”NGO.

Elite Bet Elite Bet contributed to the education and charity sector through engaging with the Malayika House in Entebbe. Malyika House is an orphanage and with support from Elite Bet, they were able to meet their mandate which includes among others education and accommodation to orphans.

Fair Sports betting T/A Fair Bet In 2017, Fair Sports betting sponsored the boda boda marathon as their contribution to CSR by mobilising funds to support victims involved in boda boda accidents.

Fortuna Ltd T/A Mayfair Casino Mayfair casino contributed Ugx 10,344,800 towards CSR in 2017. This involved a donation of Ugx 500,000 to Packwach Aids Care for Aids awareness campaign in the Northern region of Uganda, Ugx 5,000,000 to Kyogo SS for the construction of classrooms in August, Ugx 500,000 to Smart Move Media & Consultancy towards a blood donation drive, Ugx 500,000 to the local community, Ugx 3,844,800 to sponsor the gaming board for a conference in London in October

Golden city casino T/A Casino golden city Ltd. They were involved in support and sponsorship credible charities and social causes that contribute to the development of communities as well as sports in Uganda. No specific charity or community was specified.

GALS Sports betting GALS Sports betting that trades as A Better Place Ltd donated Ugx 3M (three million shillings) to little light organization to start up a day care center for the children and also teach them the basic curriculum activities.

Gaming East Africa T/A Empire Casino Gaming East Africa provided food items to Uganda school of the deaf located in Ntinda in the month of October 2017.

GATEWAY Gaming T/A U Bet Gateway Gaming was involved in charity support as their contribution to CSR. This was realized through provision of food stuff and household items to Sanyu Babies Home.

Gemex (U) Ltd T/A Gamex Gemex was actively involved in charity support in the education sector where it provided financial support to disadvantaged students identified in the community. In the same sector, Gemex also supported an orphanage and plans to continue this in the years ahead.

Grand Victoria T/A Fortbet and Diamond casino Grand Victoria selected three areas through the office of the town clerks and the Lord Mayors that were in dire need for some assistance as their csr. These areas were Mbale , Soroti and Bwera as elaborated below;

a) Swaria primary school in Soroti- Grand Victoria Limited offered to replace all the shutters and broken windows of one building with four classrooms and to rebuild parts of the floor. The total cost for the repairs according to the budget prepared by Swaria Primary School was USh 4,500,000. This was handed over to the management of Swaria by Grand Victoria and the renovations were successfully carried out.

One of the classrooms to be renovated b) Namatala primary school in Mbale- Grand Victoria donated uniforms to pupils of Namatala primary school for both football and netball sports worth Ugx 5m as shown below. Namatala primary school is a school in Mbale with a total of 1588 pupils and has been excelling in sports in both outdoor and indoor games.

c) Bwera police- Grand Victoria also supported Bwera police through donating a set of Jerseys, Shorts, Boots and balls costing a total of Ugx5m towards the support of sporting activities in Bwera.

d) Towards the end of the year 2017 and beginning of 2018, Grand Victoria Limited sponsored one of the most popular leagues in the country, the “ (UPL)”. UPL is one of the main sources for players for the National team and at the same time supports a large number of youths through employment. The total budget was Ush200m.

Goal Sports Betting Ltd Goal sports betting sponsored the East African games that took place at the Acholic war memorial centre in Gulu on the 23rd of August 2017

Intel world T/A Bet pawa Intel word provided sports equipment to KCCA primary school in Ntinda in 2017. They also organized sports clinics to spread the games to the less privileged by paying for pupils to acquire swimming skills on a termly basis.

Large solutions Large solutions (U) Ltd sponsored a community based sports gala through partnering with “improve the youth Uganda” an Organization based in Nsumbya (ITYU). They sponsored the ITYU seven aside sports gala in December 10th 2017 and provided goal posts, footballs, first aide kits, food and drinks for participants. They also restored the local community sports pitch by initiating

the drive to re-plant the grass on the pitch. The budget for the entire program was Ugx 5.85m.

Lev (U) Limited T/A Ultimate Bet Lev in 2017 contributed scholastic materials to Mirembe Primary school and these included 72 dozens of striker exercise books, 3 dozens of bic pens, 12 dozens of short coloured pencils, 12 dozens of long coloured pencils and 24 dozens of drawing pencils.

Mena Sports Consulting Uganda Limited T/A Betin Uganda The Company extended support to “bless the Child” Foundation a non- Governmental Organization through the provision of food, clothes and scholastic materials among others.

Paragon Paragon visited sanyu babies home and participated in different activities spending Ugx 200,000.

Parsha International Limited Worked with all boda boda cyclists on proper road safety usage and behavior change in all areas of their business operation. Also supplied them with training materials, road reflector jackets, one liter of engine oil and assisted them in servicing their motorcycles once a year working with police and two driving companies.

5 Point Investments T/A Bunga bet 5 Point Investments provided scholastic materials to St. Rita Primary school in Kawala worth Ugx1.7m. They also are sponsoring the feeding of crested cranes in the Entebbe zoo at Ugx 50m.

Rangers Limited T/A Betway Betway has demonstrated extensive support in the development of sports in the country through sponsoring the following teams; 1. UPDF Boxing team 2. Onduparaka Football Club 3. Power basketball Club 4. Kobs Rugby Club 5. Pool Association of Uganda 6. Darts Association of Uganda Besides Sports and talent development, BETWAY has also engaged in charity support such as the provision of beds for the maternity wing in Kagadi Hospital.

Simba Casino T/A Garden City Investments As part of fulfilling their obligation under the anti-money laundering Act 2013, Simba Casino contributed $1068 towards the anti-money laundering training and also contributed $1000 towards the rotary club Kampala North as part of corporate social responsibility.

Sports Betting Africa T/A SBA Sports Betting Africa was involved in both medical support and sports development. In 2017, Sports Betting Africa donated 6 baby incubators to the Maternity ward of Mulago National referral hospital.

Sunset Casino Ltd T/A Sunset casino Sunset Casino as part of their contribution towards CSR sponsored the surgery of a 6months old infant in India by contributing $200 (two hundred dollars) to that effect, a procedure that was successful.

Top Bet Sports Betting Limited T/A Top Bet Top Bet engaged in charity events as their contribution to CSR, it has partnered with and supported “In Need” Home (INH) in Namuwongo. In Need Home is a non-governmental organization dedicated to the care and protection of orphans and other vulnerable children to realize their full potential in life. Through this partnership, Top Bet supports and cares for orphans and vulnerable children in the area of Namuwongo and contributes a total of Ugx 3,000,000 (three million) towards the operations of the orphanage on a monthly basis. This money is used to purchase the basic day to day needs of the children in the home.

Top bet is also sponsoring Mbarara City FC through the 2017/18 Uganda Premier League season. The Sponsorship is worth Shs200m with a huge chunk supporting the club’s day to day activities.

In addition, they are sponsoring Kiwanga Football Club through the 2017-18 FUFA Regional Tournament where they are contributing Shs 2m per month.

Visvar Investment Ltd T/A Nile view Casino Visvar Investment Limited trading as Nile View Casino is actively involved in charity engagements in Jinja. It was involved in the Jinja cancer run of 2017, donated gifts and cleaned up the maternity ward, Nalufenya children’s wards and engaged in the general cleaning of a few babys’ homes around Jinja town. They actively participate in outreach programs through the rotary clubs of which they are members. In addition, they have undertaken to sensitise the public about the effects of smoking and irresponsible gaming on radios.

World Star T/A World Star Sports betting World Star was engaged in supporting charity events such as the Hope for kayla fundraising drive that sought to raise money for kayla to go to India for an operation.

3.0 RECOMMENDATIONS The key areas of reform as recommended by the Board include the following;

a) Each operator should specify the approximate amount of money planned for a particular activity b) A contact person should be named for ease of follow-up on the planned activities and their implementation c) Operators are encouraged to submit broad CSR programs that will better reflect the sector’s commitment and value

d) Operators actively involved in csr activities that benefit the community should be given first priority when licensing.

4.0 CONCLUSION

CSR in Uganda, particularly from the gaming sector has not been embraced and implemented by all operators. There has been commitment from some with no proof of implementation. Improvements in the participation and contribution to good causes is very vital if the Board is to achieve one of its required mandates as specified in Section 4 (i) of the Lotteries and Gaming Act No.7 2016. Operators are encouraged to participate in CSR, implement the above recommendations

and corporate with the Board to restore the image of the gaming sector in Uganda.
