  • The Juilliard Journal
FACULTY PORTRAIT Paul Neubauer Viola Faculty March 2017 After graduating from Juilliard, Paul Neubauer (BM '82, MM '83) became, at age 21, the youngest string principal ever to join the New York Philharmonic, where he spent six years before leaving in 1990 to pursue solo and chamber work. Along the way he joined the Juilliard faculty and the Chamber Music Society of Lincoln Center, in 1989. Appointed last spring as artistic director of the Mostly Music series in New Jersey, he'll make his Chicago Symphony debut in 2018. Why did you become a violist? It truly was my destiny. My godfather was the Viennese-born violist Paul Doktor (faculty 1971–89), and he was a major influence in my musical and personal evolution from a very early age. I also studied with him during my teenage summers and at Juilliard. On top of this, my older siblings played the violin and cello, so viola was the perfect choice since this would complete a string trio. Unfortunately that string trio lasted about 10 minutes since my siblings were not as committed to a life in classical music. And you're still part of a musical family … Yes, my wife, Kerry McDermott, is a violinist with the New York Philharmonic, and our children, Oliver and Clara, both play the violin and attend the Juilliard Pre-College program. I have told my children countless times that the viola is a superior instrument to the violin, but they unfortunately have not taken my advice as of yet. On occasion, we enjoy playing four-violin quartets with three violins and a viola.

  • Hollywood Quartet Flourished Briefly During the Early Years of the Long-Playing Record
Hollywood Quartet flourished briefly during the early years of the long-playing record. Its leader, Felix Slatkin (father of the conductor, Leonard Slatkin) was a pupil o f Zimbalist and Remer, and in 1937 became leader of the 20th Century Fox Orchestra. All the members of the Quartet were principals in various Hollywood film studio orchestras, and the ensemble did not attract attention outside the West Coast of America until the advent of LP. On its first appearance in 1952, the authors of The Record Guide, Edward Sackville-\'{/est and Desmond Shawe-Taylor, hailed the Schubert String Quintet (with Kurt Reher as second cello) as 11 one of the very best in the di scography of chamber music'', no small claim but one that does not seem to me overstated. I have periodically played this version over the years and with unfailing satisfaction for apart from their tec hnical finish and perfect ensemble, they seem to penetrate further below the surface than do most of their rival s. I have also long admired their account with Victor Aller of the Brahms F minor Quintet, which it so happens that l played to a visitor quite recently. It is a powerful and thoughtful performance, and holds its own against such distinguished rivals as Serkin with the Busch Quartet from the 1930s, and the 1969 Eschenbach/ Amadeus. The Dvorak originally appeared in harness with rhe Third Quarret of Dohn:inyi, and my first reaction was to regret that EMI had not left thi s coupling undisturbed - until, that is, I heard the Smetana.

  • Symposium Records Cd 1109 Adolf Busch
SYMPOSIUM RECORDS CD 1109 The Great Violinists – Volume 4 ADOLF BUSCH (1891-1952) This compact disc documents the early instrumental records of the greatest German-born musician of this century. Adolf Busch was a legendary violinist as well as a composer, organiser of chamber orchestras, founder of festivals, talented amateur painter and moving spirit of three ensembles: the Busch Quartet, the Busch Trio and the Busch/Serkin Duo. He was also a great man, who almost alone among German gentile musicians stood out against Hitler. His concerts between the wars inspired a generation of music-lovers and musicians; and his influence continued after his death through the Marlboro Festival in Vermont, which he founded in 1950. His associate and son-in-law, Rudolf Serkin (1903-1991) maintained it until his own death, and it is still going strong. Busch's importance as a fiddler was all the greater, because he was the last glory of the short-lived German school; Georg Kulenkampff predeceased him and Hitler's decade smashed the edifice built up by men like Joseph Joachim and Carl Flesch. Adolf Busch's career was interrupted by two wars; and his decision to boycott his native country in 1933, when he could have stayed and prospered as others did, further fractured the continuity of his life. That one action made him an exile, cost him the precious cultural nourishment of his native land and deprived him of his most devoted audience. Five years later, he renounced all his concerts in Italy in protest at Mussolini's anti-semitic laws.
