I would like to commend you on the article that you did on the Disney Dreamers (April 3, Miami Times, “Where are the Dreamers?”). It was very inspirational to read. It is amazing how when others reach out to help it can make a difference in someone’s life that you don't even know. Steve Harvey has done an amazing job with the program he put together. Ron DeSantis suspended him, in Fort Lauderdale. The Florida Supreme Court has ruled against a sheriff who fought his removal from office after the governor claimed he failed to prevent last year's Parkland school shooting. Florida's highest court agreed Tuesday, April 23, that Gov. Ron DeSantis was within his authority to suspend Israel as Broward County sheriff earlier this year. The justices noted that under the Florida Constitution, the state Senate is responsible for deciding whether the removal should be permanent.

A natural mystic blew in the air at Bayfront Park on Saturday, April 20, and it wasn’t just the exhalation of marijuana. Thousands of fans from all over North American flocked to Downtown Miami to remember the legacy of Bob Marley at a concert headlined by his family. His legacy is one that includes a bloodline of 11 claimed children and more than 50 grandchildren. Special wristbands for Bob’s family members depicted the spread of his DNA. Granddaughter, Mystic Marley, daughter of Stephen Marley, was the opening act for the family followed by her brother Yohan, then Skip, Photos courtesy of Edward Roberson/ Flicks by Ed Cedella Marley’s son. Skip released a single featuring his uncle, Damian Marley, a day before the festival, titled “That’s Not True.” The young Mar- ley was recently signed to Atlantic Records' Island Records. The label hosted an afterparty in his honor at Licking Miami Beach. His grandfather's presence could be felt through Skip’s music and covers. Five of Bob’s son, Kymani, Stephen, Julian, Damian and Ziggy Marley sang, danced and played instruments to his legendary reggae tunes. The crowd chanted and danced along to “Get Up, Stand Up,” “There’s a Natural Mystic,” “One Love,” “Is This Love” and more. Guest performances by Pitbull, DJ Khaled, Davido, Sean Paul, Busta Rhymes and many others rounded out the show. THE MIAMI TIMES | APRIL 24-30, 2019 | MIAMITIMESONLINE.COM You & Yours SECTION D Voter rights activist gets TIME honor Desmond Meade among 100 most influential people

Staff and Wire Report

The driving force behind Florida’s ballot ini- tiative to restore voting rights to Floridians with past felony convictions has been chosen as one of Time magazine’s 100 most influential people in the world. Desmond Meade, who is on list in the April 29 issue of the magazine that’s on newsstands, called the recognition “an unexpected honor.” “Being named to the TIME 100 is an unexpect- ed honor that I believe speaks to the power of committing to being of service to others, and the power of love to transform conditions and peo- ple,” said Meade, who serves as the executive director of the Florida Rights Restoration Coali- tion. “I hope that receiving this honor inspires an increase in supporting the leadership of people who are closest to the pain.” Meade championed the historic 2018 passage of Florida’s Amendment 4, a citizen’s initiative,

which restored voting rights to more than 1.4 million Floridians with past felony convictions. The amendment passed in November 2018 with 5.1 million votes and allows Floridians convict- ed of felonies (except for murder and sexual of- fenses) to vote again once they have completed all terms of their sentence, including parole and probation. “Amendment 4 represented the single largest expansion of voting rights in the United States in half a century and brought an end to 150 years of a Jim Crow-era law in Florida,” Florida Rights Restoration Coalition said in a statement issued last week.
