Dear Friends,

I must begin my letter this month with an apology. The last paragraph of my Easter letter seems to suggest Christians can only work in the Anglican Church. I did not mean this and I am sorry for any upset that I may have caused. Christianity is greater than the Anglican Church, (thank goodness) and is alive and well in many different denominations.

In 1828 a priest named William Broughton, was sent out to Australia as Archdeacon. At the time it was part of the diocese of Calcutta but eight years later Broughton was named as Australia’s first bishop. There are many stories associated with him that reflect his energy and spiritual leadership but I want to tell you about just one.

When the great gold rush came, although he was getting on in years, bishop Broughton joined himself on to the exodus. When he arrived at the diggings he drew a great crowd of miners for service on Sunday. He told them that on the following Wednesday at 6am, the building of their church would begin.

At 6am precisely the bishop, attended by a large crowd of miners walked to the place where the church was to be built. He first delivered a truly inspiring sermon which he concluded by saying “he would set them an example of what it meant that they should dig together for the honour and glory of God.” He picked up a spade and began to open the ground where the north-east support was to stand. The example was contagious; in a few moments all who could grab a spade, shovel or pick were digging also. Before 8.30am more than half the footings were dug, by midday the carpenters were at work, by evening the church was apparent in outline, by Sunday it was open and the bishop was able to consecrate it Broughton had not supplied the timber or the glass for the windows, in fact when he made the announcement on the Sunday before the only thing he had was a piece of ground, he didn’t even have a spade! His action was one of great faith and belief that God will provide.

It must have been the same for the disciples after Jesus had ascended, how were they to continue? How were they to build this new church?

The answer is faith in God that he will provide and he has been doing so since and continues to do so today. All Christians are the descendants of the disciples and we may ask how we can continue to build the church we are called to build. The simple answer is faith, believe it will happen and it will.

LOCAL CHURCH MATTERS St Mary’s, Wilby From the Register: April 29th Funeral of Denys Bakewell

It is fitting that tribute should be paid to Denys Bakewell in this magazine. Since Denys and Jackie moved to the village nearly 30 years ago they have been central to the life of both the Church and the wider community. As Elder, Reader, Verger, wonderful singer and PCC member, Denys served the church with dedication, devotion and sincerity. He was often to be seen cycling on all manner of bicycles, often on his way to playing various church organs. His passion for nature was to be seen in practical ways as well as through his wood carving, painting and photography. A friend and inspiration to many, Denys will be greatly missed. We extend our love and prayers to Jackie and all Denys’ family. Sheila Pipe – Elder To everyone who came to Denys' service: to the many, many people who sent such beautiful cards, sharing so many memories, for flowers that spoke in their special way of caring love, for e-mails from near, far and very far away, for phone calls and visits "just checking to make sure that I didn't need anything", for a casserole, a quiche, scones, a treacle tart ----.

The words of a Hymn came into my mind as I was writing: " Such love, filling my emptiness; Such love, showing me holiness;"

A truly, heartfelt "Thank you" Jackie

NEWS FROM WILBY SCHOOL

Well done to our Year 6 pupils who took their SATs during the week of 11-15 May. Our Year 3/4/5 children also did some optional practice SATs. They all deserve a well-earned rest over the half-term break.

And well done also to our sporting stars! Firstly our gymnasts: at a competition at Thomas Mills, our under 7’s team came second, our U9’s came 4th and the U11’s came 3rd in their categories. And in Cross Country at Common, we had girls finishing 2nd and 6th, and boys finishing 2nd, 3rd, 3rd, 4th and 4th in their appropriate age groups (why there are two thirds and two fourths!). Congratulations all.

Over the last month we had a sharing assembly with ‘MusicClubz’, and Chestnut class performed their sharing assembly on ‘Food and Farming’. We had a lovely visit with – undertaking pond dipping, bird box making and creating a hedgehog moni- toring station for our wildlife area. We are hopeful that we’ll secure some funds to help refurbish the wildlife area so it’s better for wildlife and safer for the children, who will then be able to use it on a more regular basis. Our stellar Wilby Gymnasts will be performing (tentatively, awaiting confirmation of numbers) at both the Wilby Village Hall fete on 6th June as well as the school’s own Summer Fayre on 4th July. Come and be amazed!

Our ever diverse set of after school clubs now includes a Minecraft club on Mondays. It’s very popular!

Our Headteacher, Philippa Coleman, attended the Annual Parish Meeting at the Wilby Village Hall on 13th May and made a presentation about successes and changes at Wilby School over the past year. Some dates to note (all are welcome!):  Saturday 6th June – School taking part in Wilby Village Hall celebration, 12noon til 2pm  Saturday 27th June - School taking part in Stradbroke Festival, 3.00pm  Saturday 4th July – School Summer Fayre, 11:30am to 2pm  Thursday 16th July – Year 6 Leavers’ Service, 2.15pm  Friday 17th July – last pupil day of the summer term – Beech and Willow classes will be exploring Latitude Festival and Chestnut; Oak and Reception will be exploring Bewilderwood.

As reminder, the school’s toddler playgroup (‘Tea & Toys’) is now a weekly event – Thursdays from 9 til 10:30am. Any parents (and grandparents / carers) and children (up to age 5) from the local area are welcome. We are sure this will complement other playgroups nearby. Come for a cuppa and meet other mums & dads!

Please feel free to contact Mrs Coleman and her team if you have any questions about Wilby School.

6 NEWS FROM WILBY PARISH COUNCIL

June 2015

The annual meeting of Wilby Parish Council was held on Wednesday 20 May 2015. The new Council is made up as follows: Chairman - Ian Williamson Vice-Chairman - David Holliday Councillors - Steve Lee; Todd Strehlow (Planning and Footpath Warden); Ian Taylor (Village Hall representative) Clerk and Responsible Finance Officer - Julie Collett

There remain two vacancies on the Council and residents are encouraged to apply for these posts. It is conceivable that if the posts are not filled then the District Council could by law install its own nominees (normally officers of the District Council), a situation we would clearly wish to avoid.

Anyone interested in joining the Parish Council should please contact the Chairman (01379 388034) or the Clerk (01986 798258). This is a great opportunity to get to know the village and to help serve its residents. It will normally involve one regular evening meeting every two months and occasional additional meetings, again held in the evenings.

At the meeting on 20th May Council learnt that progress is being made towards the provi- sion of a defibrillator and that the County Council are currently considering the application to impose a speed restriction on part of London City Road.

Work on designing the Village Survey questionnaire is almost complete and the intention is to hand deliver the survey forms to each household at the end of June 2015 for completion with the forms being collected some two weeks later. The information obtained would then be collated and analysed with a report on the findings being published and probably discussed at a public meeting later in the year.

The Annual Parish Meeting for all electors in Wilby was held on 13th May 2015 with 13 residents present. We were pleased to welcome our newly elected District Councillor, Julie Flatman, to this event and for the attendance of our County Councillor Guy McGregor, both of whom addressed the meeting.

Following reports from the Parish Council, Wilby Primary School, St Mary’s Church, the Village Hall, the WI and the Police , those present enjoyed wine and cheese at the end of the meeting.

Local Election I would like to thank everyone for their kind support in the run up to and on the day of the local election and look forward to representing our community at in the coming years.

Best wishes, Julie Flatman

Festal Evensong for The Queen’s Long Reign

6.30 p.m. Sunday, 6th September at St. Lawrence’s Church

This is something for your advance diaries. Sometime in the summer, H.M Queen Elizabeth II becomes the longest reigning monarch in British history, surpassing the reign of Queen Victoria. To recognise this landmark, St. Lawrence’s Church will be celebrating with a Festal Evensong service which will include, among other things, the singing of G.F. Handel’s Coronation Anthem, Zadok the Priest by The Chantry Singers. It would be wonderful to see a full church for this tribute to a remarkable servant of our nation. Please do make a point to keep this date free.

Jazz in the Nave 7 p.m. Saturday, 20 th June at St. Lawrence’s Church.

Prior ticket reservation is essential please: £15 per head to include the barbecue. £10 for just the concert. Time is drawing nearer for the big musical event in Brundish this year, so please let us have your ticket reservations as early as possible. Do let us know at the time of booking if you have any special dietary requirements. There will be a paying wine/juice bar available. Frank Noble and his family and friends make a welcome return to Brundish for an evening of “cool, elegant Jazz”. There will be a simple barbecue and drinks in Read’s Meadow (by the car park) before we assemble in the church to enjoy a relaxing and convivial mid-summer evening of the finest music performed by local artists. Some prayers for fine weather would be appreciated! Please mark this date in your diary, and if you wish to make sure of your reservation (don’t forget your cushion for the church!) phone David on 01728 628063.

MISCELLANY

DEFIBRILLATORS COMING TO BRUNDISH (AND LAXFIELD AND WILBY)

We are currently working in parallel with Laxfield and Wilby to bring defibrillators to each of our villages.

The Brundish defibrillator will be located in our Telephone Box at Crown Corner and we anticipate that it will be in place by mid July. We shall also be arranging a series of informal familiarisation courses and additional courses to bring us all up to speed with the latest First Aid techniques. Details to follow next month or earlier from Tim Gillingham.

DEREK and LAURA COE

Many long-standing Brundish residents will remember Derek Coe, the second son of Ruby and Herbert, formerly of Crown Corner, who was brought up in the village. Derek was recently married at Fressingfield Church to his fiancée, Laura. We wish them both much happiness for the future.

WINDOW CLEANER WANTED

Does anyone in Brundish or Wilby have a regular window cleaner??? There are at least four houses in Brundish not able to see out of their windows due to lack of finding one! Please give me a call if you know of someone in the area who would welcome four more houses on his rounds. Email: [email protected] , or telephone 01728 628309. (Anne St Quinton)

SPONSORED CYCLE RIDE - 12th September 2015

For those of you who would like to take part in this year's Sponsored Church Ride, please note the date in your diaries and give me a call so I can send you a sponsors form in due course. For those unfamiliar with the event, it entails cycling from church to church around the country lanes doing as much or as little as you wish. Just visiting Laxfield, Brundish, Wilby and Stradbroke may be enough for some younger or inexperienced cyclists, but others may wish to go further afield. It is a wonderful way to help raise funds for the church of your choice and to get out and about for pure enjoyment and fitness. Call Anne St Quinton on 01728 628309.

Letters to the Editor

Dear Sir,

As part of a family history search I wonder if anybody can remember the address in Brundish of the late Mr Leonard Robert Goddard and his wife Eva.

Mr Goddard died in 1981 and his wife Eva died in 1994. They are both buried at Saint Lawrence’s Church.

A picture of their cottage would help to complete our records.

Many thanks, Trevor Wood
