The last paragraph of my Easter letter seems to suggest Christians can only work in the Anglican Church. I did not mean this and I am sorry for any upset that I may have caused. Christianity is greater than the Anglican Church, (thank goodness) and is alive and well in many different denominations. In 1828 a priest named William Broughton, was sent out to Australia as Archdeacon. At the time it was part of the diocese of Calcutta but eight years later Broughton was named as Australia’s first bishop. There are many stories associated with him that reflect his energy and spiritual leadership but I want to tell you about just one. When the great gold rush came, although he was getting on in years, bishop Broughton joined himself on to the exodus. When he arrived at the diggings he drew a great crowd of miners for service on Sunday. He told them that on the following Wednesday at 6am, the building of their church would begin. At 6am precisely the bishop, attended by a large crowd of miners walked to the place where the church was to be built. He first delivered a truly inspiring sermon which he concluded by saying “he would set them an example of what it meant that they should dig together for the honour and glory of God.” He picked up a spade and began to open the ground where the north-east support was to stand. The example was contagious; in a few moments all who could grab a spade, shovel or pick were digging also. Before 8.30am more than half the footings were dug, by midday the carpenters were at work, by evening the church was apparent in outline, by Sunday it was open and the bishop was able to consecrate it Broughton had not supplied the timber or the glass for the windows, in fact when he made the announcement on the Sunday before the only thing he had was a piece of ground, he didn’t even have a spade! His action was one of great faith and belief that God will provide. It must have been the same for the disciples after Jesus had ascended, how were they to continue? How were they to build this new church? The answer is faith in God that he will provide and he has been doing so since and continues to do so today. All Christians are the descendants of the disciples and we may ask how we can continue to build the church we are called to build. The simple answer is faith, believe it will happen and it will. Since Denys and Jackie moved to the village nearly 30 years ago they have been central to the life of both the Church and the wider community. As Elder, Reader, Verger, wonderful singer and PCC member, Denys served the church with dedication, devotion and sincerity. He was often to be seen cycling on all manner of bicycles, often on his way to playing various church organs. His passion for nature was to be seen in practical ways as well as through his wood carving, painting and photography. A friend and inspiration to many, Denys will be greatly missed. We extend our love and prayers to Jackie and all Denys’ family. Sheila Pipe – Elder To everyone who came to Denys' service: to the many, many people who sent such beautiful cards, sharing so many memories, for flowers that spoke in their special way of caring love, for e-mails from near, far and very far away, for phone calls and visits "just checking to make sure that I didn't need anything", for a casserole, a quiche, scones, a treacle tart ----. The words of a Hymn came into my mind as I was writing: " Such love, filling my emptiness; Such love, showing me holiness;" A truly, heartfelt "Thank you" Jackie Walk in the Shadow of the Sibton Abbey Ruins An opportunity to walk in Yox Valley and see the ruins of Sibton Abbey will take place on Saturday 27th June/Sunday 28th June from 11am to 5pm both days. This was Suffolk’s only Cistercian Abbey and is not normally open to view by the public - for those wishing to have a walk round the outside of the ruins it is a rare opportunity. Admission will be £5 which includes tea, coffee or juice at the marquee on the meadow in front of the Abbey. Other refreshments including Cream Teas will be available to purchase. Children aged 5 to 16 years old are half price, and under 5 years old are free. At the same time there will be displays and a Book Sale in Sibton church. No dogs are allowed and visitors are asked to wear sensible shoes. The walk is not suitable for wheelchair access. All proceeds from the weekend will go to: the Friends of St Peters and The Cutting and Scrivener Charity, which are both registered charities. For further details please contact Debbie, Juliet or Rosie on 01728 660181/660118/660369. 5 NEWS FROM WILBY SCHOOL Well done to our Year 6 pupils who took their SATs during the week of 11-15 May. • Joint Babergh and Mid Suffolk District Council Landscape Guidance August 2015
Joint Babergh and Mid Suffolk District Council Landscape Guidance August 2015 Joint Babergh and Mid Suffolk District Council Landscape Guidance 2015 1 INTRODUCTION 1.1 The landscape of Babergh and Mid Suffolk (South and North Suffolk) is acknowledged as being attractive and an important part of why people choose to live and work here. However current pressures for development in the countryside, and the changing agricultural and recreational practices and pressures, are resulting in changes that in some instances have been damaging to the local character and distinctiveness of the landscape. 1.1.1 Some development is necessary within the countryside, in order to promote a sustainable prosperous and vibrant rural economy. However, such development would be counterproductive if it were to harm the quality of the countryside/landscape it is set within and therefore the quality of life benefits, in terms of health and wellbeing that come from a rural landscape in good condition.1 1.1.2 The Council takes the view that there is a need to safeguard the character of both districts countryside by ensuring new development integrates positively with the existing character. Therefore, a Landscape Guidance has been produced to outline the main elements of the existing character and to outline broad principles that all development in the countryside will be required to follow. 1.1.3 Well designed and appropriately located development in the countryside can capture the benefits of sustainable economic development whilst still retaining and enhancing valuable landscape characteristics, which are so important to Babergh and Mid Suffolk. 1.1.4 The protection and enhancement of both districts landscape is essential not only for the intrinsic aesthetic and historic value that supports tourism and the economy for the area but also to maintain the quality of life for the communities that live in the countryside.

  • 83: South Norfolk and High Suffolk Claylands Area Profile: Supporting Documents
National Character 83: South Norfolk and High Suffolk Claylands Area profile: Supporting documents www.naturalengland.org.uk 1 National Character 83: South Norfolk and High Suffolk Claylands Area profile: Supporting documents Introduction National Character Areas map As part of Natural England’s responsibilities as set out in the Natural Environment White Paper1, Biodiversity 20202 and the European Landscape Convention3, we are revising profiles for England’s 159 National Character Areas (NCAs). These are areas that share similar landscape characteristics, and which follow natural lines in the landscape rather than administrative boundaries, making them a good decision-making framework for the natural environment. NCA profiles are guidance documents which can help communities to inform their decision-making about the places that they live in and care for. The information they contain will support the planning of conservation initiatives at a landscape scale, inform the delivery of Nature Improvement Areas and encourage broader partnership working through Local Nature Partnerships. The profiles will also help to inform choices about how land is managed and can change. Each profile includes a description of the natural and cultural features that shape our landscapes, how the landscape has changed over time, the current key drivers for ongoing change, and a broad analysis of each area’s characteristics and ecosystem services. Statements of Environmental Opportunity (SEOs) are suggested, which draw on this integrated information. The SEOs offer guidance on the critical issues, which could help to achieve sustainable growth and a more secure environmental future. 1 The Natural Choice: Securing the Value of Nature, Defra NCA profiles are working documents which draw on current evidence and (2011; URL: www.official-documents.gov.uk/document/cm80/8082/8082.pdf) 2 knowledge.
