McCrae1 Received: date / Accepted: date Abstract This paper describes the development of a multilingual, manually anno- tated dataset for three under-resourced Dravidian languages generated from social media comments. The dataset was annotated for sentiment analysis and offensive lan- guage identification for a total of more than 60,000 YouTube comments. The dataset consists of around 44,000 comments in Tamil-English, around 7,000 comments in Kannada-English, and around 20,000 comments in Malayalam-English. The data was manually annotated by volunteer annotators and has a high inter-annotator agreement in Krippendorff’s alpha. Voiceless Heroines: Use of Dubbed Voices in Tamil Movies*
Asian Women March 2017, Vol. 33, No. 1, pp. 73-98 Voiceless Heroines: Use of Dubbed Voices in Tamil Movies* Premalatha Karupiah Universiti Sains Malaysia, Malaysia 1 Abstract Scholars have argued that sound in films has not been given much theoretical attention. Without understanding the use of sound in films, a comprehensive knowledge of the meaning and ideology of movies is not possible. This paper explores how heroines’ voices are presented in Tamil movies and provides empirical evidence about gender inequality in the aural practices of Tamil movies. The data for this study came from a content analysis of 40 Tamil movies produced in India (1961–2012), 8 websites related to voice dubbing in Tamil movies, and 4 YouTube videos. The term “dubbed voice” refers to the practice of using a voice-actor or dubbing artist to deliver the dialogue while someone else acts in the movie. In Tamil movies, this trend has been common since the 1980s among female actors in lead roles but not among lead male actors. Even though the inability to speak Tamil is one of the reasons for this practice, it does not explain why female stars mostly use a dubbed voice. The male actors–including non-native speakers–often use their own voice. The use of a few select dubbing artists to lend their voices to heroines limits the type of female voices heard (from lead roles) in Tamil movies and narrowly defines the types of women’s voices that are associated with someone who is attractive or good. Therefore, Tamil movies are limiting not only the looks that are showcased on the screen but also the female voices heard in these movies. -
Corpus Creation for Sentiment Analysis in Code-Mixed Tamil-English Text
Corpus Creation for Sentiment Analysis in Code-Mixed Tamil-English Text Bharathi Raja Chakravarthi1,Vigneshwaran Muralidaran2, Ruba Priyadharshini3, John P. McCrae1 1Insight SFI Research Centre for Data Analytics, Data Science Institute, National University of Ireland Galway, fbharathi.raja, [email protected] 2School of English, Communication and Philosophy, Cardiff University, [email protected] 3Saraswathi Narayanan College, Madurai, India, [email protected] Abstract Understanding the sentiment of a comment from a video or an image is an essential task in many applications. Sentiment analysis of a text can be useful for various decision-making processes. One such application is to analyse the popular sentiments of videos on social media based on viewer comments. However, comments from social media do not follow strict rules of grammar, and they contain mixing of more than one language, often written in non-native scripts. Non-availability of annotated code-mixed data for a low-resourced language like Tamil also adds difficulty to this problem. To overcome this, we created a gold standard Tamil-English code-switched, sentiment-annotated corpus containing 15,744 comment posts from YouTube. In this paper, we describe the process of creating the corpus and assigning polarities. We present inter-annotator agreement and show the results of sentiment analysis trained on this corpus as a benchmark. Keywords: code mixed, Tamil, sentiment, corpus, dataset 1. Introduction (2016) and without annotating the word level language Sentiment analysis has become important in social media tag. The instructions enabled light and speedy annotation research (Yang and Eisenstein, 2017). Until recently these while maintaining consistency. -

Falling Forward: Marginalisation and Ostracization of Transpersons and a Tipping Point in Social Inclusion and Cohesion
Science, Technology and Development ISSN : 0950-0707 Falling Forward: Marginalisation and Ostracization of Transpersons And A Tipping Point in Social Inclusion and Cohesion. Fr.Justin Prabu PhD. Research Scholar, Loyola College Affiliated to the University of Madras Chennai -34 & Dr. A.THEEBA Associate Professor in History Rani Anna Government College for women Affiliated to Manonmaniam Sundaranar University,Tirunelveli 8 Mail id [email protected] INTRODUCTION Of many things and no one thing. Thirunangai, Ali, Aanali, Idapi, Kilibam, Alli, Annagan, Gosha, Sandagam, Pandagan, Pedi, Pedu, Pethai, Pennali, Pedar, Orinam, Vali, Kanchana, Iru Unarvugal, Iru Mugan, Aval Nangai1 and numerous other familiar words fall sour into our ears. These are Tamil words that are really positive and pleasant in nature. However, most of us conceive them as negative. A known Tibetan proverb ‘a hundred male and a hundred female qualities make a perfect human being’ challenges our perception and allows us to see beyond binaries. Sexual binaries are male and female. Gender equality is always misconstrued by binaries of gender. It is a fact that there are over 45 gender identities that are found in human beings, among these male and female are just two. Our society has dominantly learned to look at things as binaries. It is not uncommon to see people talk, act and think in terms of sexual binaries: male and female. Interestingly, today we have come of age to see numerous colour gradients between maleness and femaleness. It is this spectrum of shade between maleness and femaleness that makes the transpersons equal and one among us. Jean Paul Sartre’s philosophy of human person states that hell is the other, who are my significant ‘others’? Fear, suspicion and ridicule are basic human emotions that a majority projects onto numerical minority who are ‘third gender’ or transpersons and our ‘significant others’.
