Match background

AS Roma have extra incentive to do well as a new UEFA Champions League campaign gets under way. Their first match pits them against Romanian debutants CFR 1907 Cluj and the Italian team would like nothing more than to still be involved in the competition's last match, with the final to be staged in their own Stadio Olimpico on Wednesday 27 May. • Two successive quarter-final appearances have set a target for Roma to try and surpass, and they will be looking to start on a high. At least the draw for the group stage spared the Italian league runners-up another confrontation with Manchester United FC after the sides met four times last season. The English champions and reigning UEFA Champions League holders have dismissed Roma from the last eight in each of the last two years and also took four points off them in the 2007/08 group stage. • Roma's confidence rocketed after beating Real Madrid CF home and away in last season's first knockout round, but United's 2-0 victory at the Stadio Olimpico in the quarter-final first leg was a bitter blow from which they could not recover and they lost the away leg by a single goal. It was the first defeat the Giallorossi had suffered in ten home games in the competition; before that, they had won six and drawn three of nine home games stretching back to the beginning of the 2006/07 campaign. • The 1-0 Old Trafford defeat was at least a big improvement on the 7-1 drubbing they suffered on the same ground at the same stage 12 months previously – their heaviest defeat in UEFA club competition. Now mounting their sixth UEFA Champions League bid in eight years, the Italian club will be hoping to at least advance to the last four for the first time. • Two of Roma's wins in the nine-match unbeaten home sequence were registered in the first match of a new campaign, and 's team will be looking to make it three on the trot as they launch their challenge in Group A. In 2007/08 they started with a 2-0 win at home to FC Dynamo Kyiv; 12 months earlier, Matchday 1 brought a 4-0 success against FC Shakhtar Donetsk. • So, for the third season running, Roma begin with a game against opposition from eastern Europe at the Stadio Olimpico, which is set to play host to European football's biggest club fixture for the fourth time. The home side have faced a team from just once before, in the 1985/86 UEFA Cup Winners' Cup first round, when they beat FC Steaua Bucureşti 1-0 in the Italian capital before a 0-0 away draw.

• It will be an occasion for CFR Cluj to remember as they mark their first appearance on Europe's grandest stage under their new Italian coach , who replaced at the start of September and gets an immediate opportunity to cross swords with a club from his homeland. Trombetta will be hoping his team can reproduce the form that took them to their first ever Liga 1 triumph in May. They finished one point ahead of Steaua to become the first team from outside to be crowned Romania's champions in 17 years, and they followed that success by claiming the Romanian Cup for the first time as well. • It is the third time CFR Cluj have competed in Europe. In 2005, they took part in the UEFA Intertoto Cup and became the first Romanian side to reach the final stage after knocking out Athletic Club Bilbao and AS Saint-Etienne, however they went on to lose to RC Lens. They then fell 3-1 on aggregate to Anorthosis Famagusta FC – who are also making their UEFA Champions League debut in 2008/09 – in last season's UEFA Cup second qualifying round. • The other Group A fixture pits last season's runners-up Chelsea FC against FC Girondins de Bordeaux.

Roma UEFA milestones • None UEFA Champions League statistics • None Disciplinary information • Roma have no players suspended or within a booking of a ban. Latest domestic information • Saturday 13 September: US Città di Palermo 3-1 AS Roma (Miccoli 20 56, Cavani 73; Baptista 8) Roma are without a win after two matches of the season following defeat in Sicily. The Giallorossi dominated the early stages and opened the scoring when Julio Baptista struck his first goal for the club after a one-two between Alberto Aquilani and Stefano Okaka Chuka, the latter teeing up the Brazilian to score into an empty net. Palermo soon replied through Fabrizio Miccoli, who added another after half-time before Edison Cavani sealed the points. • "We played below our usual standards," said coach Luciano Spalletti. "We created a lot of chances to score, as many as Palermo, but they were more clinical. It's good to play immediately in the UEFA Champions League as we want to forget about this game as quickly as possible." • Already without the injured and Simone Perrotta, Spalletti had to contend without the jet-lagged Juan, while Philippe Mexès (knee) and Mirko Vučinić (back) were both rested as a precaution after returning from international duty with minor knocks. With Mexès and Juan unavailable, new signing Simone Loria made his debut while Okaka Chuka started in place of Vučinić. Daniele De Rossi was replaced at half-time by Matteo Brighi after suffering a neck injury. • September is traditionally the worst month of the season for Spalletti, who has earned 15 victories, 13 draws and as many defeats in this time during his coaching career. • The Palermo fixture was the 17th successive Serie A game in which Roma have scored, a run that has yielded 33 goals. • Roma had started their Serie A campaign with a 1-1 home draw against SSC Napoli on 31 August. Aquilani gave Roma the lead but Marek Hamšik equalised and the Giallorossi failed to regain the advantage, despite playing against ten men for the final 37 minutes. • New signing Jérémy Menez made his debut as a second-half substitute against Napoli. • winners Roma lost 6-5 on penalties to Serie A champions FC Internazionale Milano in the Italian Super Cup on 24 August. In a match in which summer signings John Arne Riise and Baptista made their competitive debuts, De Rossi and Vučinić twice brought the Giallorossi level to force penalties at San Siro, but spot-kick failures from Totti and Juan proved costly.

• Roma president Franco Sensi died after a long illness on 17 August aged 82. His daughter Rossella Sensi was named the new president on 28 August. • On 30 June De Rossi extended his contract with the Giallorossi until 2012, while Brighi did likewise on 25 July. CFR Cluj UEFA milestones • The Roma game is Cluj's first ever match in the European Champion Clubs' Cup. UEFA Champions League statistics • None Disciplinary information • CFR Cluj have no players suspended or within a booking of a ban. Latest domestic information • Friday 12 September: CF Gloria 1922 Bistrita 1–2 CFR 1907 Cluj (Borbely 24; Didi 40, Miguel og 69) CFR Cluj required a Pedro Miguel own goal to record their first win in five Liga 1 matches. The run looked like continuing when Csaba Borbely gave the hosts the lead, but Didi capitalised on a Ciprian Tatarusanu mistake to level before half-time and Cluj were revived. They were the better team after the restart, even if they had to rely on Miguel – under pressure from Cristian Panin – to secure the points. • The victory meant a winning start for Trombetta, taking charge of CFR Cluj for the first time since replacing Ioan Andone at the beginning of the month. "It was a well-deserved victory, but we should have scored another goal and not have been so nervous in the dying minutes," he said. "Now we have three days to focus on AS Roma and I hope that [Daniele] De Rossi's scoring form stopped against Georgia. These three points will at least ensure we are in high spirits before the match in Rome." • It was CFR Cluj's first league win since two own goals secured a 2-0 victory against FC Gloria Buzău on 3 August. • Didi's goal was his first in the league since 9 December 2007 and came two days after celebrating his 26th birthday. • CFR Cluj endured a disappointing start to the Liga 1 season, lying in eleventh place going into the international break, seven points off the lead. Results, however, were initially promising, the opening day 4-0 win at newly-promoted CS Otopeni being followed up with a 2-0 home win against Gloria Buzău. • CFR Cluj then lost 1-0 at FC Rapid Bucureşti, the start of four games without a win going into the break, home draws with FC Universitatea Craiova (1-1) and FC Politehnica Iaşi (0-0), coming either side of a 2-1 loss at SC Vaslui. • The indifferent early season form ultimately cost Andone his job as on 31 August the coach and the club's entire technical staff had their contracts ended by mutual consent. A day later Trombetta, formerly Andone's assistant, was named as his replacement. Injury news • No injuries Summer transfers •In Hugo Alcantara (Belenenses CF) Dorin Toma (CF Gloria 1922 Bistriţa) Alvaro Pereira (AA Argentinos Juniors) Cristian Prette (CA Huracán) Jose Ignacio Casanave (CA Empalme) Yssouf Koné (Rosenborg BK) Gustavo Andrés Oberman (CD Castellon)

Head coach AS Roma: Luciano Spalletti Date of birth: 7 March 1959 Nationality: Italian Playing career: AC Entella Chiavari 1914, Spezia Calcio 1906, FC Esperia Viareggio, Empoli FC Coaching career: Empoli FC, UC Sampdoria, Venezia Calcio, (twice), Ancona Calcio, AS Roma A hard-working midfielder in his playing days, Luciano Spalletti has remained faithful to the same mentality since starting his coaching career in 1993/94 at his former club Empoli FC. Spalletti enjoyed immediate success with successive promotions; in his first full season, he led the Tuscan club to before taking them to Serie A the following campaign. After a good first term in the top flight, Spalletti left to join UC Sampdoria but was sacked 28 games into the 1998/99 season. It was the beginning of a difficult period for Spalletti, who had brief stays at Venezia Calcio, Udinese Calcio and Ancona Calcio before returning to Udinese in summer 2002. Spalletti steered Udinese to sixth- and seventh-placed finishes before writing his name into the club's history as the first coach to guide Udinese to UEFA Champions League football with a fourth place in 2004/05. That June, however, Spalletti answered a call from AS Roma, who had avoided relegation on the last day of term and had been struggling to fill the gap left by Fabio Capello. He signed a two-year contract. After a difficult opening to 2005/06, Spalletti managed to gain the faith of the Roma squad. Without injured captain Francesco Totti, Roma set a record of consecutive Serie A wins (eleven) and came fifth before the Italian match-fixing tribunal punished Juventus, AC Milan and ACF Fiorentina. That resulted in the Giallorossi moving up to second, earning them an automatic UEFA Champions League place. After a knockout stage berth was secured, Roma handed Spalletti a new contract until 2011 and he rewarded them with another second place in Serie A and Coppa Italia glory. The following year, they were pipped to the Italian title by FC Internazionale Milano yet again but reached another UEFA Champions League quarter-final.

CFR 1907 Cluj: Maurizio Trombetta Date of birth: 29 September 1962 Nationality: Italian Playing career: Udinese Calcio, Cantanzaro FC, SPAL 1907 Ferrara, ASD Giorgione, US Triestina Calcio, AC Pistoiese Coaching career: Udinese Calcio, SSC Napoli, AC Perugia, Bologna FC, Ancona Calcio (all as assistant) CFR 1907 Cluj (as coach) Having spent most of his career out of the footballing limelight, Maurizio Trombetta took his first senior role as coach of CFR 1907 Cluj, stepping up from his familiar role as assistant coach to replace Ioan Andone on 1 September 2008 following the Romanian champions' disappointing start to the season. Trombetta started his career as a striker in the youth ranks at Udinese, and while he scored the decisive goal as his side won the Primavera Youth Scudetto in 1981, he was to play only one senior season with for hometown side – in 1981/82 – before moving on to Cantanzaro. He scored the only two Serie A goals of his career the following season as his new side were relegated from the top division, and spent the remaining ten years of his playing career in the lower leagues with SPAL, Giorgione, Triestina and Pistoiese. Having become a physical education teacher as well as a footballer, he combined his twin talents from 1994 as 's assistant at Udinese, following his mentor to Napoli and Perugia before returning home once more to assist at Udinese. Trombetta then joined Guidolin as he moved on to Bologna, earning a 1-0 win at AC Venezia in his only game in sole command, while Guidolin was serving a suspension. Following Guidolin's dismissal, Trombetta rejoined Galeone at Ancona before briefly returning to Udinese in 2006/07 and taking charge of amateur side Sevegliano Calcio prior to moving to Romania to act as Andone's assistant.

UEFA information

Elite Coaches Forum UEFA has given Europe's top club coaches another unique opportunity to come together and exchange views with the governing body on the state of the European game at a gathering in Nyon, Switzerland. The UEFA Elite Coaches Forum celebrated its tenth anniversary with discussions on tactical and technical trends, the evolution of the European club competitions, the leadership role of the modern coach, how coaches cope with the demands of the high-pressure game today and their relationship with match officials. "It's a short but very intense gathering. Twenty-three top coaches were here, a fantastic turnout from our point of view," said UEFA technical director Andy Roxburgh. "UEFA respects them and listens to what they say, and there are many things that UEFA has taken on board [over the years]." EURO example UEFA hopes that the UEFA Champions League season will carry on in the same spirit that marked UEFA EURO 2008™ in Austria and Switzerland in June. At the UEFA Champions League group stage draw in Monaco, UEFA General Secretary David Taylor recalled the attitude of players, supporters and officials at the EURO tournament, which heartened European football's governing body as it strives to promote the idea of respect throughout football. Congratulating the 32 clubs that have qualified for the UEFA Champions League group phase, Mr Taylor said: "The new European club football season comes hot on the heels of a hugely successful European Championship, where the spirit of both respect and fair play were seen both on and off the field. I'd therefore like to take this opportunity to ask all the clubs, players and officials to continue in that spirit for the season." Only a Game? exhibition Fans from across the globe will be able to get close to some of football's most coveted trophies at the ground-breaking Only a Game? exhibition which opens in Liverpool next month. The UEFA Champions League trophy, the UEFA Cup and the UEFA Cup Winners' Cup will all be on display at the interactive exhibition in the World Museum Liverpool. While providing a traditional museum experience, the exhibition also aims to provoke visitors into considering the social and cultural impact of the planet's most popular sport. The exhibition, which will run from 11 October to 1 March 2009, has been organised by UEFA in conjunction with the Northwest Development Agency, the National Football Museum and National Museums Liverpool to mark the city's year as 2008 European Capital of Culture. Charity cheque As ambassador for the European Leukodystrophy Association (ELA), Zinédine Zidane accepted a cheque from UEFA for CHF1m (€619,000) during the draw for the group stage of the UEFA Champions League in Monaco. At the start of each season UEFA donates CHF1m to a charitable or humanitarian cause. "It is a major contribution by UEFA and an important help for the association I have been sponsoring for the past eight years," Zidane told uefa.com. "I believe we have made good progress and ELA is lucky to receive a cheque from UEFA and its president Michel Platini." Leukodystrophies are rare genetic diseases, and UEFA's donation will help support a four-year project developing a European information and exchange network. Support for referees Europe's top referees and assistant referees have been urged by UEFA to carry on the good work this season and build on the positive results from UEFA EURO 2008™. The annual UEFA summer gathering for its leading match officials was an ideal platform for European football's governing body to give a resounding thumbs-up to the referees, assistants and fourth officials who played a crucial role in nurturing the theme of respect UEFA is striving to promote among players, referees, officials and spectators. "I want to congratulate the 12 referees, 24 assistant referees and eight fourth officials who were at the EURO tournament," said Referee Committee member Volker Roth, who added that the officials had stood up to the challenge of replacing recently retired elite referees. "We had no Pierluigi Collina, Anders Frisk or Markus Merk, but you responded, your performances were great, and we are proud. We ask you to keep up this high level of performance."

Competition facts

• UEFA Champions League: Group stage milestones Holders Manchester United FC are hoping to avoid becoming the first defending champions to fail to get through a group stage since the UEFA Champions League began. (This record, like the others, includes the seasons between 1999/00 and 2002/03 that featured a second group stage). In 1992/93, FC Barcelona were the reigning European Champion Clubs' Cup holders and were beaten 4-3 on aggregate in the second round by PFC CSKA Moskva. S.S. Lazio goalkeeper Marco Ballotta became the oldest player to compete in the UEFA Champions League in 2007/08 when he featured against Olympiacos CFP on Matchday 1 at the age of 43 years and 168 days. The record was previously held by Alessandro Costacurta, the AC Milan defender who played against AEK Athens FC in the 2006/07 season at the age of 40 years and 211 days. Ballotta was aged 43 years 252 days when he featured against Real Madrid CF on Matchday 6. Laurent Blanc is the oldest player to score in the competition, aged 36 years and 339 days, having found the net for Manchester United FC in their 3-2 defeat of Olympiacos CFP on 23 October 2002. Celestine Babayaro is the youngest player to have appeared in the UEFA Champions League. He was 16 years and 87 days when he started for RSC Anderlecht against FC Steaua Bucureşti on 23 November 1994. He was then sent off in the 37th minute. In 2006/07, PFC Levski Sofia joined 1. FC Košice in being the only team to have played in the UEFA Champions League and never picked up a point. The Slovakian side have not returned to the competition since losing all six games in their only campaign to date in 1997/98. Six other teams have gone through a single group stage campaign without picking up a point: FC Dynamo Kyiv (2007/08), SK Rapid Wien (2005/06) and RSC Anderlecht (2004/05) plus FC Spartak Moskva and Bayer 04 Leverkusen (2002/03, first and second group stage respectively) and Fenerbahçe SK (2001/02, first group stage). Dynamo also conceded 19 goals in their six outings in 2007/08, equalling the record let in during a group stage set by Ferencvárosi TC in the 1995/96 campaign. Before their 3-1 win against Sporting Clube de Portugal on Matchday 6 of the 2006/07 campaign, FC Spartak Moskva went 22 games without a win in the competition, surpassing the unwanted record set by AEK Athens FC on Matchday 3 of the same campaign. The lowest total for a team qualifying from the group stage is seven points. The first to do it, since three points for a win was introduced in 1995/96, were Legia Warszawa that same season before Bayer 04 Leverkusen managed it in 1999/2000 and Liverpool FC in 2001/02. FC Lokomotiv Moskva and eventual finalists Juventus both progressed with seven points in 2002/03, a feat achieved by Rangers FC and Werder Bremen in 2005/06. Last updated: 01.09.2008
