  • Cobbling Together the Dream Indian Eleven
COBBLING TOGETHER THE DREAM INDIAN ELEVEN Whenever the five selectors, often dubbed as the five wise men with the onerous responsibility of cobbling together the best players comprising India’s test cricket team, sit together to pick the team they feel the heat of the country’s collective gaze resting on them. Choosing India’s cricket team is one of the most difficult tasks as the final squad is subjected to intense scrutiny by anybody and everybody. Generally the point veers round to questions such as why batsman A was not picked or bowler B was dropped from the team. That also makes it a very pleasurable hobby for followers of the game who have their own views as to who should make the final 15 or 16 when the team is preparing to leave our shores on an away visit or gearing up to face an opposition on a tour of our country. Arm chair critics apart, sports writers find it an enjoyable professional duty when they sit down to select their own team as newspapers speculate on the composition of the squad pointing out why somebody should be in the team at the expense of another. The reports generally appear on the sports pages on the morning of the team selection. This has been a hobby with this writer for over four decades now and once the team is announced, you are either vindicated or amused. And when the player, who was not in your frame goes on to play a stellar role for the country, you inwardly congratulate the selectors for their foresight and knowledge.

  • Nike Launched the 'Bleed Blue' Initiative Six Months Ago, in a Show of Solidarity Towards the Game of Cricket. Now, the Campaign
Nike launched the 'Bleed Blue' initiative six months ago, in a show of solidarity towards the game of cricket. Now, the campaign has reached culmination with the 'Yards' ad, and after the World Cup win, the 'United by Blue' commercial. A look at what Nike is upto. Nike and cricket go back to almost five years when the brand started seriously focussing on Team India and the game. The 'Traffic Jam' film was among its first advertising attempts on that theme. "Some brands have nothing to do with the sport, and use it only as a great advertising platform. Cricket is a long-term holistic property for us, and the fit is rather natural, with Nike being a sports brand as well," says Sanjay Gangopadhyay, marketing director, Nike India. Six months ago, on September 3, 2010, the 'Just do it' brand kickstarted it's 'Bleed Blue' campaign, which reached its logical conclusion with the end of the ICC Cricket World Cup on April 2, 2011. Bleed Blue stems from the truth that cricket is not just a sport, but more of a religion in India. There is tremendous passion involved in the game, and the campaign hopes to give an expression to that passion. 'Blood, sweat and blue' is the idea that came to JWT India, Nike's agency. While 'blood' and 'sweat' represent the hard work, grit and unwavering determination of the players, 'Blue' is an obvious take on the blue jerseys that Team India sports, and that these jerseys are an aspiration for every gully cricketer in India -- in other words, everyone aspires to be a Sachin Tendulkar or a Virender Sehwag.

GAUTAM GAMBHIR Published 28.5.19 A friend was determined to watch the London Olympics. He saved for a year to be there and savour the mother of all sporng acons, the Olympics. We all know the acon and the layered drama that sports produce but he speaks about a completely different aspect about those Olympics. Aer having spent more than 20 years of his life watching cricket in India, he swears by the organisaonal ability of England to host an event of that magnitude. He claims that even in these mes of terror aacks and hyper-security measures, London never seemed ruffled. It was always polite and seemingly laidback. My buddy is now off to the UK again to watch the Cricket World Cup. Since the Summer Olympics of 2012, a school in Peshawar has been aacked, so has the Manchester Arena and lately even a mosque in New Zealand. It is clear. The perpetrators want to widen their strike zones to increase the fear. Hence as I write this preview to this mega crickeng event, I want to share that safety of all concerned is paramount for me. Afghanistan, the babies of the crickeng world, would know what I mean. For them, cricket provides identy, it gives them a purpose and above all it gives them pride. They will certainly not win this one but their mere presence gives hope to our region. I will be checking their progress very closely. I am not sure if Madame Tussauds, London has a statue of ViratKohli.
