Et, comme il arrive toujours en pareille conjoncture, on se lamentait comi- quement en voyant le héros de la veille battu par celui du jour qui lui-même n'attendait pour baisser pavillon que le héros du lendemain. Année médiocre, génération versatile, performances contradictoires, les malédictions pleuvent... En réalité, si l'on veut bien renoncer un instant à cette marotte du classement établi une fois pour toutes, à cet engouement natio nal pour les concours et les examens, à cette obsession juridique d'une distribution obligatoire de récompenses et de châtiments, on constatera qu'il en fut presque toujours ainsi, sauf en de rares années où l'on voit apparaître le grand cheval très supérieur à tous les autres. D'ailleurs, tant que ce vainqueur n'est pas sacré crack indiscutable par une victoire internationale sur les meilleurs étrangers de son âge, rien ne prouve que cette année-là doive être cochée au crayon rouge. N'est-ce pas plutôt celle où fleurit un bouquet de champions de valeur sensiblement égale qui mérite parfois d'être considérée comme l'an du bon vintage ? Et il y a encore ce fait à considérer que les compétitions du début de l'année réservées aux trois ans sont disputées par des animaux dont beaucoup sont encore en fin de croissance.
