Dr. Oswald was born in , , he grew up in Styria, Austria and graduated from the University of in 1986. He completed his urology residency at the Hospital of the Sisters of Charity in Linz followed by the fellowship training at the department for pediatric urology in Linz with Prof. Riccabona; from 1995 until 2001 he served as his deputy.

In 2001 he set off for the University Clinic of Urology in Innsbruck and started his scientific career in pediatric urology with Prof Bartsch. Together with the department for anatomy (Prof Fritsch) and histology (Prof. Klima) he intensively deals with the topic of urogenital embryology with an emphasis on the trigonal and vesicoureteral development. Clinical and basic research yielded in publications of the microanatomical and pathophysiological conditions of the vesicoureteral reflux disease.

In 2004 this results in a professorial dissertation with the title “pathophysiology and microanatomy of the fetal and refluxing ureterovesical junction – reducing the comorbidity of the infant vesicoureteral reflux disease” submitted for obtaining the ‘venia legendi’. This habilitation treatise has earned him the grant from the European Society for Pediatric Urology (ESPU) for the best European thesis in the pediatric urology research area.

The main aspects of current research are the pathogenesis of vesicoureteral reflux, HPV epidemiology, in detail the role of the Langerhans cell in preputial tissue, HOX gene guidance in the development of the urethra and tissue engineering of the fibroblast – myoblast differentiation in extracellular matrix degeneration of the ureterovesical junction. Clinical research deals with the reduction of diagnostic and therapeutic burden of sick children as well as the development of minimal invasive surgical procedures. He is a peer reviewer for multiple major urology journals (J Urol, Urology, Br Journal of Urology, Ped J of Urology etc.

a Program of the SEMINAR DIARY FROM FELLOW Diary of Marina Dermanov, MD Institute for Child and Youth Health Care, Novi Sad, Serbia 15.04. – 21.04.2018

Sunday evening, April 15. Arrival to Vienna airport and a three-hour train ride to Salzburg through a picturesque countryside just to anticipate the fantastic week ahead. Arenberg Castle is situated in a very peaceful spot just a few minutes away from the city center. The evening started with a warm welcoming reception and an introduction of all participants. It was a great opportunity to meet people from all over the world with the same expectations and eager to learn something new.

Monday, April 16. After an early breakfast, the seminar started with all the information about the program for the week. We took the pre-seminar test, and the courses started. The lectures on Pediatric Urology Emergencies, Cryptorchidism and Office based Urology were presented by Dr. Gregory Tesian and Dr. Thomas Kolon. After the lunch break, we had a Neuropathic Bladder lecture and case presentations to guide us through. The most valuable experience was the discussion through and after the lectures. We spent a beautiful evening visiting the city center.

Tuesday, April 17. The courses started with Embryology of the GU System and Disorder of Sex Development, a serious but friendly discussion followed. We took a coffee break and continued with Hydronephrosis and Bladder and Cloaca Extrophy. Although these type of diseases are seen all over the world, they are treated in many different ways; it was valuable to listen to very experience opinions from the faculty about the solutions. Right before lunch, we took a group photo. The afternoon was set for fellows presentations of different cases. Me, as well had a presentation, it was about Urachal pathology. The diagnosis and the treatment options raised some questions about the outcome. It was very nice to hear various ideas. As we already felt like friends, the majority of the group spent the evening together.

Wednesday, April 18. Imperforate anus, Cloaca and Urogentital sinus; pretty complex issues were explained in an easily comprehensive way. Diagnostic and therapeutic aspects of Vesicoureteral Reflux were introduced to us by Dr Josef Oswald. We enjoyed the coffee break on the sunny terrace. A group of us spent the free afternoon in the beautiful, fairy tale like . We were amazed by the incredible nature. This was a demanding trip, so we rested for the end of the evening.

Thursday, April 19. We spent the morning learning about Hypospadias, Pediatric Nephrolithiasis as well as Diagnostics in Pediatric Urology and minimally invasive surgery in Pediatric Urology. Interactive lectures kept us interested the whole morning. The thing that I have learned about Hypospadias is that complications are common all over the world even in experienced hands. The afternoon was dedicated to fellows’ cases. In the evening, we attended a chamber concert performed by famous musicians at the Arenberg Castle listening to pieces of Schubert and Brahms.

Friday, April 20. Tomorrow, I expect to be as always, some new topics, looking forward to them. Graduation dinner and the awards in the evening will be at the same time exciting and sad, because this will be the moment to say goodbye to amazing friends, at least for a while….

When I am back at home I will sit down and figure out an easy way to apply all the valuable knowledge and skills I acquired during this amazing week, as well as to share it all with my colleagues. I am certain that my institute and particularly my patients will benefit from this.

Marina Dermanov, MD (Serbia) SEMINAR DIARY FROM FELLOW Diary of Martin Kubat, MD University Hospital Brno, Brno, Czech Republic 15.04. – 21.04.2018

Sunday evening, April 15. I arrived in the beautiful city of Salzburg on Sunday evening. At 7:00 pm we joined the welcome reception. First contact with my colleagues from all over the world: Tanzania, Uzbekistan, USA… It looks like it is going to be a good meeting :)

Monday, April 16. We started fast. Coffee could not even start to work and we had a test to take. Some of the tasks were tricky- but that is why we are here. To find solution for the tricky diagnosis. After the test, we discussed Pediatric Urology Emergencies with Dr. Gregory Tasian. Dr. Thomas Kolon presented our routine diagnosis - cryptorchidism and the operation options. After an amazing lunch, Dr. Long showed us how to treat myelomeningocele in a cooperation with other specialists. We are going to present our cases tomorrow. Dr. Thomas Kolon showed us how to improve our presentation skills. Before dinner, there was a small gap in the time table for jogging.

Tuesday, April 17. After breakfast, we were woken up by an interesting presentation of GU embryology presented by Dr. Josef Oswald. It is always good to remind the origin of developmental disorders in urology. An interesting discussion on hydronephrosis and operation indications followed. After the coffee break, Dr. Thomas Kolon presented the cloaca and urogenital sinus problematics. Those are severe rare congenital defects, which should be cured in the centers. We heard that doctors in Western countries are traveling or cooperating on cloaca or exstrophy operations. Why this is not working in Europe? After another amazing lunch, we started to present our case reports. I really appreciated when our professors gave us some tips regarding further follow-ups or treatment. After the presentations, there was time for more jogging in Salzburg.

Wednesday, April 18. Wake up, breakfast and coffee. Since the early morning, we shared our experiences among our colleagues and discussed our cases and national habits. In the morning session, we discussed vesicouretral reflux. It was surprisingly interesting to see differences between Austrian approaches, injections, surgery and the American ones: no more injections, robotic reimplantations. I learned important tricks and tips in VUR diagnostics I will apply for my diagnostics! It was interesting to see the issue of varicocele. The indication criteria and post-operative changes of semen analysis are arguable. Thanks to Dr. Kolon for his tip regarding the division of gubernaculum veins and external spermatic collaterals. After lunch, we had a free afternoon. Some of my colleagues decided to explore the city. I have already been in this beautiful city, so I decided to go hiking! I went to Königssee and climbed Mt. Jenner. The panoramic view on valley was just breathtaking!

Thursday, April 19. We started with hypospadias. After the coffee and breakfast of course! I really liked Dr. Haid’s presentation. He explained all operation steps clearly, so we could find some hacks to avoid post-operative complications. Thank you for that. We continued with nephrolithiasis. The nightmare of pediatric urology for some of us. Dr. Tasian nicely summarized prophylaxis. He continued with laparoscopy and robotic surgery on children. Robotic Mitrofanoff surgery? Guys, you are good :) My colleagues presented their case reports. I found it interesting to see how my friends deal with pediatric urology diagnosis. Some of them deal with lack of diagnostic tools but despite that, they treat patients well. We had another amazing dinner followed by a chamber music concert. That was spectacular. The city of Mozart just showed us its highlight. And then we went to an Irish pub :).

Tomorrow is our last day… I am not sure if I am looking forward to leaving this amazing atmosphere and all my new friends. But I think after this amazing seminar we feel more self-confident and determined to treat our small patient better. Frankly, the seminars showed me the broadness of our domain. Thank you for that and see you again. Bis bald :)
