The story of his Ballad of the Unknown Warrior will feature in the first hour of Remembrance Sunday with Ricky Ross on Sunday, 11 November at 10.00 am. The radio documentary, which will include a performance of the ballad by the National Youth Choir of Scotland is part of the BBC’s commemorative season across radio, television and online. In response to the massive sense of loss and the tragic fact that thousands of bodies lay unidentified during World War One, the Unknown Warrior became the subject of tributes, graves and memorials across Europe. Ricky said: ‘It was very moving to discover the stories of these soldiers who were said to be ‘known unto God’ and also to hear from the families who mourned them. ‘The result of this journey is a ballad which I hope reflects some of the emotional power that this iconic symbol still has for the many people who have lost loved ones in conflicts.’ The sheet music for the ballad, arranged in four parts by arranger David Higham, is being made available for any choirs who may wish to perform it in their own services or commemorations. On BBC One Scotland on Armistice Day at 4.00 pm, World War One Remembered – Glasgow Cathedral will broadcast a live multi-generational service from Glasgow Cathedral in the presence of HRH The Princess Royal and Vice Admiral Sir Tim Laurence. BBC Scotland radio presenter Stephen Jardine undertakes an emotional journey in a documentary in which he traces his grandfathers’ remarkable World War One stories. In Grandfather’s War, 1.30 pm, Thursday 8 November, on Radio Scotland Stephen tracks the fate of both his maternal and paternal grandfathers. Thomas Rae Jardine was saved by pioneering surgery after sustaining a serious head injury on the front line and emigrated to Canada before returning to Scotland; while Archibald Love Martin suffered from shell shock dying just before the 2nd World War. In a BBC Radio Scotland Time Travels special, on Tuesday 6 November, at 1.30 pm, Susan Morrison follows up on listener Kevin Dunion’s quest to discover more about the one woman whose name appears on the war memorial in his local town of Anstruther. Elizabeth ‘Johnnie’ Johnston volunteered for the Women’s Army Auxilliary Corps. His detective work uncovers a story full of love and tragedy across oceans – from Fife to France and ultimately Canada. And Edi Stark interviews World War One historian, Sir Hew Strachan in a special edition of Stark Talk on Wednesday, 7 November, at 1.30 pm. Also on Armistice Day on Radio Scotland at 11.05 pm Iain Anderson will feature songs and stories from the stage musical 'Far, Far From Ypres' to mark the centenary of the end of WW1 with special guest Ian McCalman followed by a selection of classic tracks BBC Two Scotland has shown 100 Days to Victory, a two-part drama documentary telling the epic story of the Allies’ finest hour - and the invention of modern warfare. From the visceral experience of those serving on the battlefield to the crucial decision making of the generals, it vividly tells the story of the Allies’ multinational feat of arms. The series is now available on iPlayer. It is an international co-production involving BBC Scotland, Foxtel Australia and The History Channel in Canada and is produced by Electric Pictures. Bob’s wedding day nerves are tested to the limit after Nicole threatens to tell the bride about their secret tryst. Meanwhile, Kim has her own anxieties about whether her mum, Isobel, will be able to give her away. There’s trouble in store after best man Angus is shocked by Nicole’s revelation that she kissed Bob. Angus challenges Bob who goes on the defensive, revealing he was conned by a scheming Nicole. Blissfully unaware of her groom’s infidelity, Kim’s heartfelt vows strike a chord with Bob who makes a shocking confession. With blackmailer Nicole watching on, Kim’s left heartbroken, leading her to question whether she really wants to say “I do”…or not. Elsewhere, Lydia returns to the scene of the crime, forcing her to relive unsettling memories from the explosion which nearly claimed her life. She turns to Alex for support, leading to an emotional confession between the pair. Ellie’s plans to reveal her pregnancy are scuppered by AJ’s admission he doesn’t want to be a dad again. Devastated, she turns to Bernie who uses divine intervention and a cryptic psychic reading to encourage AJ to uncover Ellie’s surprise. Graham Norton, Tess Daly, Rochelle and Marvin Humes and new addition Rob Beckett are just some of the big names presenting tonight’s show to try to raise millions for BBC Children In Need, helping young people throughout the UK. The show will feature sketches, performances and treats from some of the nation’s best-loved stars. Highlights include the cast of EastEnders enchanting Albert Square with some magical songs and some well-known faces will joining forces with the Strictly professional dancers to dazzle their way to the Pudsey Glitterball trophy. In the studio, there will be special treats from London’s West End as the stars of School of Rock and Everyone’s Talking About Jamie take to the stage. As well as all the action from London, Jackie Bird will be presenting live from BBC Scotland's HQ at Pacific Quay in Glasgow. The Scottish children in this year’s Children In Need Choir come from schools in West Dunbartonshire and join in a rousing nationwide rendition of ‘A Million Dreams’ from The Greatest Showman. Last year a staggering £60.7million was raised in the UK, helping to support more than 2700 projects. Thanks to the money raised tonight, thousands of childrens' lives will change for the better and Jackie will present a series of moving films featuring some of the Scottish charities and children who have benefitted from the fund. On BBC Radio Scotland from Monday-Thursday this week, Judith Ralston will report from around Scotland on some of the amazing work of fund-raisers – and the organisations that benefit from donations.
