Sports Fans Give Pete Rose Another Chance The Harris Poll For release: Sunday AM, April 2, 1989 1989 115 ISSN 0895-7983 SPORTS FANS GIVE PETE ROSE ANOTHER CHANCE; CLOSE SPLIT ON CHOICE FOR NCAA CROWN By Louis Harris A solid 54 percent of all baseball fans say that even ''if it is proven that Pete Rose bet on baseball games that his own team was involved in," he "should be given another chance and allowed to be voted into the Baseball Hall of Fame." A sizable 66 percent of those who follow baseball claim they have not drawn a judgment about the Cincinnati Reds manager on the gambling charges levelled against him, preferring to wait to see if he really did the things he's been accused of doing. Only 19 percent of the fans report being disappointed with Rose according to this latest Harris Poll, taken by telephone, between March 23rd and 29th among a representative cross section of 1,248 adults nationwide, of whom 1,046 are sports fans. In another timely area of sports, basketball fans are deeply divided in their loyalty on which of the Final Four teams they will be rooting for in the NCAA championship tournament. The poll was completed before yesterday's semi-final games which determined who would play for the NCAA championship tomorrow night. Illinois proved to be the most popular team, named by 16 percent as their choice, followed by Duke and Seton Hall at 14 percent, with Michigan behind at 11 percent. As might be expected, there are sharp regional differences, with Seton Hall backed most in the East, Illinois in the Midwest, and Duke in the South. In the West, with no team in the Final Four, basketball fans there favored Michigan and Seton Hall, both underdogs. This latest Harris Sports Poll shows that the number of fans who follow most sports has been rising, reversing a trend from the mid-1980s, when it appeared that sports were vastly overexposed on television. Big winners include: -- Both college and professional basketball have gained followers, with the college version up 12 points and the pros up 8 points. -- Auto racing shows an increase of 6 points in its following. -- Other winners were pro football, bowling, boxing, golf, and hockey, all up by 3 points. Also gaining in following were baseball and soccer, each up one point. -- Those sports that showed a decrease in interest and following were horse racing, which fell 3 points, tennis, down 2 points, and college football, off a point. The two leading college sports -- basketball and football -- are heading in opposite directions. College basketball is soaring in fan following, while football appears to be in trouble. 'Jndoubtedly, the scandals in a number of major college football programs accounts for this change. Pro football, by contrast, is still gaining real ground . TABLES Between March 23rd and 29th, the Harris Poll asked a nationwide cross section of 1,248 adults, by telephone: "Pete Rose, the manager of the Cincinnati Reds, who holds the record for the most base hits, is now accused of betting heavily on all sports, including baseball. Are you deeply disappointed in him, somewhat disappointed, not disappointed at all, or are you waiting to see if he really did the things he's accused of?" (over1 . Figures for age, sex, race and education were weighted where necessary to bring them into line with their actual proportions in the population. In a sample of this size, one can say with 95 percent certainty that the results have a statistical precision of plus or minus three percentage points of what they would be if the entire adult population had been polled. • Pete Rose's Baseball Gambling Admission and Its Rhetorical
American International Journal of Contemporary Research Vol. 2 No. 3; March 2012 Pete Rose’s Baseball Gambling Admission and Its Rhetorical Implications Steve Eichmann 3005 Bridlewood Dr. Glen Mills, PA 19342 USA Abstract When Pete Rose was banned from baseball in 1989 for gambling on baseball, he faced an immensely steep uphill battle for his reinstatement. For years following the banishment, Rose continued to deny that he ever once bet on baseball, saying that these were false allegations. Hoping that the powers that be would eventually believe him, Rose continued his denial until 2004, when he decided to come clean. In a tell-all book released that year, Rose admitted to betting on baseball and even on the team that he managed, the Cincinnati Reds. Rose felt that by telling the truth after lying all of those years that baseball and its fans would immediately forgive him and it would restart his entry back into baseball again. However, the rhetorical implications of Rose finally admitting to betting on baseball have been steep and have left many wondering whether the rhetoric was effective or not. Introduction When you step foot into the Baseball Hall of Fame, you see the biggest legends in the game of baseball, some with numbers that simply defy logic. However, try these numbers on for size: 4256 hits, 3562 games played and 14,053 at bats, all tops in their categories in Major League Baseball history. Add that to three World Series victories, three batting titles, one Most Valuable Player Award, two Gold Glove awards, the Rookie of the Year Award and 17 All-Star Game appearances at 5 different positions.

  • Baseball Fans Back Lifetime Ban of Pete Rose by 56-42 Percent
The Harris Poll For release: Sunday AM, September 3, 1989 1989 137 ISSN 0895-7983 BASEBALL FANS BACK LIFETIME BAN OF PETE ROSE BY 56-42 PERCENT By Louis Harris Both baseball fans and the general public endorse Cmissioner A. Bartlett Giamatti's decision to ban Pete Rose from baseball for life. Baseball fans support the Comnissioner's action by 56-42 percent, while the entire public backs his action by a slightly closer 52-41 percent according to this Harris Poll, taken by telephone, between August 25th and 29th among a representative cross section of 1,250 adults nationwide, including 884 baseball fans. while these results show a sizable minority who would not have taken such drastic action, they represent a dramatic change of heart on the part of both the public and baseball fans from last March when the charges against the former Cincinnati Reds manager were first made. Back then, a solid 55 percent majority would have simply had the Comissioner take him to task for betting on baseball, but then would have "given [him] another chance." Now the fans believe Commissioner Giamatti was right by a 14 point margin. The reasons are evident from this special Harris Sports Survey: -- An 84 percent majority of baseball fans are convinced that Rose was guilty of betting on baseball games. Such an infraction of baseball's rules could bring him an automatic suspension from the game for one year. -- A 68-22 percent majority of baseball fans are also convinced that Rose was guilty of betting on his own team, the Reds.

  • ENERGY STAR Success Story: Great American Ball Park, Cincinnati Reds
ENERGY STAR Success Story: Great American Ball Park, Cincinnati Reds Located on the winding banks of the Ohio River in downtown Cincinnati, the Great American Ball Park is home to the Cincinnati Reds, baseball's first professional franchise. The ballpark, built next door to the Reds’ former home, Riverfront Stadium, officially opened for the 2003 season. Equally as enthusiastic as their hometown fans, the ballpark’s management team continues to improve the ballpark’s energy performance and is a leader among stadiums nationwide. Energy Management with ENERGY STAR The Cincinnati Reds were one of the first Major League Baseball teams to join ENERGY STAR as a partner in 2008 and use ENERGY STAR resources to track energy usage, improve energy performance, and communicate their efforts to staff and the public. Improving energy performance is an important environmental strategy for the Reds and they have received kudos from local officials and enhanced loyalty from fans for leading by example. The ballpark operations management team benchmarks the ballpark’s energy performance using the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency’s (EPA) Portfolio Manager, an online energy tool to track whole-building energy intensity and greenhouse gas emissions. By inputting historical energy data going back to 2007, and ongoing monthly energy consumption and cost information, the Reds are able to measure progress and quantify improvements. To date, the ballpark’s energy intensity is 27 percent better than the national average for entertainment buildings1, even with an off-season construction project during the winter of 2009. As part of their energy management plan, the ballpark’s building operations management team implemented several energy conservation measures and integrated energy efficient technologies into the ballpark’s infrastructure.

  • Bridewell V. Cincinnati Reds 155 F.3D 828 (6Th Cir
Bridewell v. Cincinnati Reds 155 F.3d 828 (6th Cir. 1998) Authored by Ashley Hollan The maintenance staff working for the Cincinnati Reds (“Reds”) at Riverfront Stadium in Cincinnati, Ohio brought suit against the Reds in 1998, asserting that the baseball franchise violated § 207 of the Fair Labor Standards Act (“FLSA”), 29 U.S.C. § 207(a)(1). The maintenance staff claimed the Reds violated the FLSA when they refused to pay the staff overtime (time plus one-half) for the hours that the staff worked exceeding 40 hours per week. The Reds claimed they should not be required to pay overtime as required by the FLSA because the franchise constitutes an amusement or recreational establishment that operated for less than seven months per year under § 213(a)(3)(A) of the FLSA. The district court granted summary judgment to the Reds, agreeing that the franchise’s seasonal operation serves to exempt the Reds from paying overtime. The Sixth Circuit Court of Appeals reversed the decision, noting that the proper focus was not the duration of the baseball season, but on the fact that the Reds organization operated year-round with no fewer than 120 employees in the “off-season” and the case was remanded. In the appeal at hand the Reds challenged the decision of the Sixth Circuit Court of Appeals, arguing the seasonal operation of the franchise should suffice to exempt the Reds from paying overtime. The Reds cited § 213(a)(3), which exempts from the FLSA’s overtime provisions any employee employed by an establishment if it does not operate for more than seven months in any calendar year, or during the preceding calendar year, its average receipts for any six months of such year were not more than 33 1/3 per centum of its average receipts for the other six months of such year.

  • Baseball's Return Includes Several Comeback Stories
Baseball’s return includes several comeback stories Associated Press / 07:42 PM July 27, 2020 Cleveland Indians starting pitcher Carlos Carrasco delivers in the third inning in a baseball game against the Kansas City Royals, Sunday, July 26, 2020, in Cleveland. (AP Photo/Tony Dejak) Carlos Carrasco won his first start since his leukemia diagnosis, Yoenis Céspedes hit a home run in his return from major leg problems — and Daniel Bard had the longest road back of them all. This past week was obviously an emotional one for many people in baseball, and it was especially significant for players who had lengthy absences even before the coronavirus shut the sport down in March. Bard had not pitched in the major leagues since 2013, and after his control and confidence deserted him, his playing career appeared over before he attempted a comeback this year. He made the roster for the Colorado Rockies and earned the win in relief Saturday against Texas. Carrasco was diagnosed with leukemia last year. He was back in the bullpen for Cleveland in September and took the mound Sunday as a starter, beating Kansas City. Céspedes hadn’t played since 2018 — he had surgery on both heels and broke an ankle — but he was back Friday, homering for the New York Mets for the game’s only run against Atlanta. Not all comebacks went that smoothly. Shohei Ohtani returned to the mound to pitch for the first time since 2018, but the two-way star didn’t get an out Sunday in the Los Angeles Angels’ loss to Oakland.
