I THE BACKGROUND 2 1 WHY PUNJAB? Exit British, Enter Congress In 1849 the Sikh empire fell to the British army; it was the last of their conquests. Nearly a hundred years later when the British were about to relinquish India they were negotiating with three parties; namely the Congress Party largely supported by Hindus, the Muslim League representing the Muslims and the Akali Dal representing the Sikhs. Before 1849, the Satluj was the boundary between the kingdom of Maharaja Ranjit Singh and other Sikh states, such as Patiala (the largest and most influential), Nabha and Jind, Kapurthala, Faridkot, Kulcheter, Kalsia, Buria, Malerkotla (a Muslim state under Sikh protection). Territory under Sikh rulers stretched from the Peshawar to the Jamuna. Those below the Satluj were known as the Cis-Satluj states. 3 In these pre-independence negotiations, the Akalis, led by Master Tara Singh, represented the Sikhs residing in the territory which had once been Ranjit Singh’s kingdom; Yadavindra Singh, Maharaja of Patiala, spoke for the Cis- Satluj states. Because the Sikh population was thinly dispersed all over these areas, the Sikhs felt it was not possible to carve out an entirely separate Sikh state and had allied themselves with the Congress whose policy proclaimed its commitment to the concept of unilingual states with a federal structure and assured the Sikhs that “no future Constitution would be acceptable to the Congress that did not give full satisfaction to the Sikhs.” Gandhi supplemented this assurance by saying: “I ask you to accept my word and the resolution of the Congress that it will not betray a single individual, much less a community ..

_____________________________________________________________________- 25 th February, 2015 Ranji Trophy: Mumbai's Shardul Thakur aims to top bowling charts Mumbai pacer Shardul Thakur, who is just four wickets away from topping the bowling charts for the Ranji Trophy season, believes today's semi-final clash against Karnataka is the perfect opportunity to fulfill his dream Mumbai pacer Shardul Thakur had a couple of goals when he started the domestic season. First was to iron out the inconsistency factor and the second was to top the bowling charts in Ranji Trophy. Mumbai pacer Shardul Thakur The 23-year-old knew if he can be consistent, the wickets would follow. It certainly did. After six five-wicket hauls in nine matches, Thakur is now staring at fulfilling his second goal of the season — that is to be the highest wicket-taker in the Ranji Trophy this season. At the moment D Siva Kumar tops the wicket-takers list with 44 under his belt. But with Andhra failing to make the semis, Thakur (40 wickets) is the favourite to take the top spot. Maharashtra's Samad Fallah (37 wickets) and Karnataka's S Aravind (35 wickets) are the only potential contenders challenging Thakur. Thakur is eyeing today's semi-final clash against Karnataka in Bangalore as an ideal platform to claim the No 1 spot. "After our quarter-final victory (where Thakur claimed eight wickets in the match against Delhi), one of my teammates told me that I am now just four wickets away from becoming the highest wicket-taker of the season. "It was one of my goals to be the top bowler and I am really excited to accomplish that goal in this match.

  • Defence Diplomacy Between India and Myanmar: State of Play Dr
ISPSW Strategy Series: Focus on Defense and International Security Issue Defence Diplomacy between India and Myanmar: State of Play No. 600 Dr Bibhu Prasad Routray Feb 2019 Defence Diplomacy between India and Myanmar: State of Play Dr Bibhu Prasad Routray February 2019 Abstract New Delhi’s strategic objectives in Myanmar remain important, yet ambigous. Firstly, the country is a lynchpin for India’s Act East policy. Secondly, it is a theatre where New Delhi is seeking to challenge the decades-old dominance of Beijing. And thirdly, Myanmar holds key to ending the remnants of the insurgencies in India’s northeast. To fulfil these objectives, New Delhi intends to boost the bilateral defence ties. While India’s Act East policy is a work in progress and the insurgents from North East India have not been dislodged from Myanmar’s territory, the ties between the defence forces of both countries have demonstrated signs of strengthening. For fulfilment of strategic objectives, however, there is a need to go beyond rhetoric and work on deliverables. About ISPSW The Institute for Strategic, Political, Security and Economic Consultancy (ISPSW) is a private institute for research and consultancy. The ISPSW is an objective, task-oriented and politically non-partisan institute. In the increasingly complex international environment of globalized economic processes and worldwide political, ecological, social and cultural change, which occasions both major opportunities and risks, decision- makers in the economic and political arena depend more than ever before on the advice of highly qualified experts. ISPSW offers a range of services, including strategic analyses, security consultancy, executive coaching and intercultural competency.
