2013 annual report

Opening the door to greater educational opportunities since 1963. LETTER FROM THE PRESIDENT & BOARD CHAIR

A Better Chance celebrated its historic 50th Anniversary in 2013. During this milestone year, we reflected on a half century of providing access to life-transforming educational opportunities while looking ahead to the next 50 years of transforming talented youth into tomorrow’s leaders. The year-long celebration provided an opportunity to feature several of our exemplary Alumni leaders including Governor Deval Patrick, former Ford Foundation president Luis Ubiñas and Ambassador Bonnie Jenkins through our Distinguished Speakers Series. We showcased our long-term successful collaboration with more than 300 of the nation’s finest college preparatory schools through regional breakfasts that also featured outstanding Alumni. The highlight of our celebration was the 50th Anniversary A Better Chance Awards Dinner in June that recognized our outstanding Scholars, our 16 Legacy School partners who have worked with us for 50 years and honored two exemplary business leaders Roger Ferguson, Chairman and CEO of TIAA-CREF and Theo Killion, President and CEO of Zale Corporation. It was a Sandra E. Timmons wonderfully memorable year that brought together our Scholars, Alumni, program partners and generous supporters. At the 50th Anniversary Awards Dinner, we introduced A Better Chance’s transformative plan to expand student opportunity, ensure success in school, college and beyond, and build sustainability. Specifically, A Better Chance will EXPAND our programs to serve more students, deepen SUPPORT to students to ensure success, and SUSTAIN the pipeline of diverse leaders by engaging more fully and leveraging our Alumni network. The plan is already underway. During this year, we launched successfully a revitalized application process. The new process allows additional time for preparation and work with applicants to increase the number of students admitted to our Member Schools. We also introduced a series of summer workshops for applicants focused on improving academic skills and preparation for standardized admissions exams. Finally, we put in place a new student information system to allow better tracking and measurement of student progress and success. We look forward to sharing additional plan details and progress in the coming months. Ronald R. Pressman Over the course of the last 50 years, A Better Chance has been a driving force in the effort to increase educational attainment among youth of color. Our record of success is evident in the more than 14,000 Alumni who have become leaders in their respective fields. Their success is a direct result of the educational access that they received through A Better Chance. Our accomplishments would have been impossible without the steadfast support of our many program partners, friends, and Alumni. Thank you for your continued investment in our Scholars and our vital work. With your help, we are confident we will reach our goal of nearly doubling the number of Scholars served annually by 2020. Working together, we will continue to strengthen the pipeline of diverse leaders by helping talented, young people realize their leadership potential, and in doing so, position our society for great success ahead. Thank you again for your continued belief in and support of our important mission to increase substantially the number of well-educated young people of color who are capable of assuming positions of responsibility and leadership in American society.

Sandra E. Timmons Ronald R. Pressman President Chair, National Board of Directors

Supporters of A Better Chance

A Better Chance’s work would not be possible without the generous support of its donors and partners. In fiscal year 2013, Alumni and friends of the organization made their contributions in the following ways: Individuals joined or renewed their DreamBuilder membership by donating at least $1,200 per year. Launched in 2008, members of the DreamBuilder Society are part of an esteemed group who recognize the organization’s tremendous legacy and impact and share our enduring commitment to helping talented youth of color. Also, A Better Chance appreciates its Institutional Funders that have shown their support in the form of grants to help fund our signature College Preparatory Schools Program. The National Partnership Program enables companies to sponsor The A Better Chance Awards—our single biggest event of the year—and provide year-round funding of our programmatic activities. The 50th Anniversary A Better Chance Awards Dinner took place on June 11, 2013, during which the organization recognized leaders who have demonstrated a serious commitment to supporting education and diversity. Eight hundred supporters, Alumni, and Scholars saluted our honored guests: the 2013 A Better Chance Scholar Award winners, Chairman’s Award winner Roger Ferguson, Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of TIAA-CREF, and DreamBuilder Award winner Theo Killion, Chief Executive Officer of Zale Corporation. We thank the following donors and partners for investing in our Scholars. Working together, we can make the future that much brighter for each and every one of them.

• Where you were before becoming an A Better Chance Scholar? I grew up in inner city , but had the great fortune of attending Roland Park Junior High School, a city wide magnet school, where Andover and Exeter came to recruit underrepresented students. • What was your experience at your Member School? It was an outstanding and incredibly expansive experience. I was exposed to an amazing group of teachers and peers and was challenged intellectually, socially and physically. I came to understand the importance of being a well-rounded person and of giving back to the community. At Phillips Academy I discovered many life-long passions — the performing arts, especially dance, literature and writing. • What impact did A Better Chance have on your life? A Better Chance made my experience at Phillips Academy possible, so its impact is extraordinary for all of the reasons above. I characterize A Better Chance and Andover as my “big break” — that pivotal experience in life that catapults you into a different trajectory of life. • Why did you choose to invest in this organization? A Better Chance is an incredibly powerful force of transformation in the lives of young underrepresented students. It is an investment in the next generation of leaders of color.
