About 3 million years ago the Colorado Plateau uplifted and erosion by wind, rain and snowmelt created Oak Creek Canyon and exposed the layers of sediment to form the spectacular red rock formations seen around Sedona today. Human history can be traced back 4,000 years when the first known hunter/gatherers settled in the valley. A more advanced civilization emerged between 900 and 1350 A.D. Known as the Sinagua people (meaning without water in Spanish), they built pueblos and cliff houses, were proficient farmers, potters, made jewelry, established trade routes and had an understanding of astronomy. After their mysterious disappearance about 1400 A.D, the Yavapai and Apache peoples began to occupy this area. The first Anglo settler in Sedona wasJohn James Thompson, followed by a few more settlers during the 1880’s. These early inhabitants lived a precarious existence, hunting, fishing and farming a few acres to keep their families fed. By the turn of the century the new settlers had diverted water from Oak Creek to irrigate and water the few head of cattle they had acquired. By the time T.C. Schnebly had arrived with his wife in Sedona there were about 15 homesteading families. Schnebly was an enterprising young man who had a general store and a hotel in his home on 80 acres where Tlaquepaque and Los Abrigados Resort are now located. He organized the first post office submitting his wife’s name, Sedona, which was approved June 26th, 1902.
