Painted decoration on water jars from Byzantine Athribis in the Egyptian Delta EGYPT PAINTED DECORATION ON WATER JARS FROM BYZANTINE ATHRIBIS IN THE EGYPTIAN DELTA Anna Południkiewicz Polish Centre of Mediterranean Archaeology, University of Warsaw Abstract: Water jars are easily recognizable as a type owing to the strainer fitted into the neck of these vessels. This form was distinguished in the assemblage coming from the Polish excavations around Kom Sidi Youssuf in Tell Atrib, the site of ancient Athribis in the Nile Delta. The discussed vessels were made of Nile silt and richly painted on the surface. The article focuses on the decoration of these water containers, presenting a catalogue of motifs: geometrical, vegetal, zoomorphic, human and others. The set is dated to the 6th–7th century AD based on the excavation context and comparative studies of the so-called Coptic painted pottery from Egypt. It focuses mainly on painting and graphic arts, and selected aspects of photography, design and architecture. Appropriation from Japanese sources triggered the articulation of new visual and conceptual languages which helped forge new art and art educational paradigms that would define the modern age. Starting with Polish fin-de-siècle Japonisme, it examines the role of Western European artistic centres, mainly Paris, in the initial dissemination of Japonisme in Poland, and considers the exceptional case of Julian Żałat, who had first-hand experience of Japan. The second phase of Polish Japonisme (1901-1918) was nourished on local, mostly Cracovian, infrastructure put in place by the ‘godfather’ of Polish Japonisme Żeliks Manggha Jasieski. His pro-Japonisme agency is discussed at length. -

K M ET = EtudTrav x 30 ( 50 ) Études et Travaux has turned fi fty years old and is herewith presenting its 31st volume. A good occasion to attempt a short retrospection. The journal’s history parallels that of what is frequently called the ‘Polish school of Mediterranean archaeology’.1 Its creator, Kazimierz Michałowski, was already the head of the Chair of Mediterranean Archaeology at the University of Warsaw, as well as Deputy Director of the National Museum in Warsaw, when he founded the Research Centre for Mediterranean Archaeology of the Polish Academy of Sciences in Warsaw in 1956, which in 2010 was transformed into the Institute of Mediterranean and Oriental Cultures of the Polish Academy of Sciences.2 As an institution responsible mainly for scientifi c documentation from Polish excava- tions in Egypt, Sudan and the Near East, and for scholarly studies on the original materials discovered during these works, as well as for publication of this research, the Research Centre for Mediterranean Archaeology is somehow organically connected with a parallel institution of the University of Warsaw, generated also by Michałowski, in 1959 in Cairo. The University Centre (Polish Centre of Mediterranean Archaeology), with two branches, headquartered in Warsaw and with a logistics ‘Station’ in Cairo-Heliopolis, is the offi cial organiser of most of the Polish excavations in various areas of the Mediterranean. Études et Travaux, published by the Academy Centre, became a scientifi c forum for inter- national presentation of the achievements of the ‘Polish school’. From the very beginning its articles were published exclusively in foreign languages, mainly English and French, but – at special occasions (e.g. -

OBITUARY William J. Murnane 1945-2000 I remember Bill, as his friends used to call him, as a man of action, always busy and practically never without a smile on his face. Always ready to share the enormous knowledge he had. He was connected with the University of Chicago from the very beginning. In 1973 he completed his Ph.D. dissertation on Ancient Egyptian coregencies, which was published four years later and which has not lost any of its currency even today. Shortly before that he joined the Oriental Institute Epigraphic Survey as an epigrapher and worked at the Chicago House in Luxor until 1985. He also partici- pated in discussions concerning the temples of Hatshepsut and Tuthmosis III at Deir el-Bahari, which the Polish team has been restoring in the past few dozen years. He showed himself then as a great friend of us, Poles. Bill was a respected scholar. His book “The Road to Kadesh: A Historical Interpretation of the Battle Reliefs of Sety I at Karnak” (1985) was sold out within a couple of years and a new revised edition was published in 1990. Working at Chicago House, Bill also contributed substantially to the Epigraphic Survey series, including volumes on “The Battle Reliefs of King Sety I at Karnak”, and to the “Reliefs and Inscriptions at the Luxor Temple” series. His last work was “Texts from the Amarna Period in Egypt.” 9 OBITUARY From 1987 he was Professor of History at the University of Memphis and Associate Professor at the University's Institute of Egyptian Art and Archaeology. -

Barbara Ruszczyc by Jadwiga Lipinska Dr. Barabara Ruszczyc, Egyptian archaeologist and museum curator, was born in Vilnius on September 18th, 1928, the youngest of six children (three daughters and three sons) of the prominent Polish painter Ferdynand Ruszczyc (1870-1936), and Regina Rouck, from a family of Danish descent. Her father was a professor at several universities and academies of art and was well known as an organizer of cultural life in Vilnius. Unfortunately both her parents died when Barbara was still a child. Living in eastern Poland, with its complicated political circumstances, exposed young Barbara to troubled, stormy times during her first sixteen years. Until 1940, Vilnius, together with its surrounding countryside, belonged to Poland, but after World War II it became part of Lithuania. During the war it was occupied twice by the Soviets, and once, but for a longer period of time (1941-1944), by the Germans. The second Soviet occupation resulted in deportations for most of the Poles from this territory. When war broke out in 1939 (the same year she lost her mother), Barbara was forced to leave school and stay with two sisters and a brother in the family’s country house on an estate named Bohdanow. The oldest sister Janina (1914-1988) had studied art history first in Vilnius and then in Germany for two years at Goettingen and also, until 1939, at Warsaw University. She had to abandon her study to care for her dying mother and then her younger siblings when they were left orphans. In 1939 Soviet troops attacked Poland and occupied Vilnius and the family estate. -

Received: 22 June 2020; Accepted: 2 September 2020; Published: 5 September 2020 Abstract: Faience objects produced from the fourth millennium BC in ancient Egypt are considered as the first high-tech ceramics in human history. Despite extensive studies on manufacturing technology, many aspects of this complex technology remain a mystery and there is no methodology in place to unravel the techniques of Egyptian faience object production. Detailed studies presented herein fill the gaps, verifying standing opinions and allowing certain aspects of faience manufacturing technology to be reconstructed. The object of this innovative investigation is a hemispherical faience bowl discovered by archaeologists excavating a Ptolemaic workshop district at the site of Tell Atrib in the southern Nile Delta.
