Occupant. Use: Mark Twain Memorial, the former residence of Samuel Langhorne Clemens (better known as Mark Twain), now a house museum. The carriage house is a mixed-use structure and contains museum offices, conference space, a staff kitchen, a staff library, and storage space. Significance: Completed in 1874, the Mark Twain Carriage House is a multi-purpose barn with a coachman's apartment designed by architects Edward Tuckerman Potter and Alfred H, Thorp as a companion structure to the residence for noted American author and humorist Samuel Clemens and his family. Its massive size and its generous accommodations for the coachman mark this structure as an unusual carriage house among those intended for a single family's use. The building has the wide overhanging eaves and half-timbering typical of the Chalet style popular in the late 19th century for cottages, carriage houses, and gatehouses. As the stock market fell to unprecedented lows, citizens struggled to live and to provide for their families. Amid this atmosphere of panic, hopelessness, and uncertainty, artists responded by capturing the harsh realities of life in New York City as well as the leisure and entertainment activities that provided some means of escape. This artistic movement came to be known as Social Realism. While there were regional styles of Social Realism, the works almost always question the social structures that created and maintained the marginalization Museum of Art of the lower classes and simultaneously reference the vitality and resiliency of the people. Social Realism emerged from the complementary work of the proceeding Ashcan School. Those artists sought to realistically capture the gritty conditions of New York City’s crowded tenements, alleys, subways, and slums and such social outsiders as street urchins, alcoholics, and prostitutes. It focuses in particular on her first phase of production—the years from 1937 to 1943—when she developed an important archive of pictures documenting children’s art and play encountered in the city streets. The dissertation is designed to help us understand the reasons why the subject of urban children’s art and play proved so productive for Levitt in her first phase of work. Why did she return again and again to the sight of children at play in the city streets? Why did she expend so much effort collecting children’s rude and crude drawings found on the pavement and the brownstone walls? What led her to envision the child as her genius loci of the urban streets, and what did she make out of the subject? Chapter one situates Helen Levitt’s initial turn to the child in relation to a surge of child imagery that appeared in the visual culture of the 1930s. -

Hearst and Pearl Harbor A Memoir in 41 Parts by Taylor Coffman Part 1 DAILY NEWSPAPERS routinely include a corrections box. This journalistic tradition goes way back; in fact, it originated more than a century ago in the better media. Never mind how the National Enquirer goes about its strange business. From The New York Times down to hundreds of other mainstream papers in this country, misspelled names or erroneous dates get corrected quickly, very often the next day. Freedom of the press is a basic American right, to be sure—but it’s also a serious matter of public trust, not to be lightly invoked. Magazines handle such matters differently. By appearing once a week or, in many instances, just once a month, their corrections tend to be stale when they finally appear. They do get published, though, if only “for the record.” With books it’s another story. In the realm of nonfiction a given edition of a biography or a historical work may have one appearance only, extending over many years before its backlog “sells through.” A good while ago my book about San Simeon called Hearst’s Dream was denounced by a nervous bureaucrat; and thus its lengthy ban in the Hearst Castle gift shop. Denied its main market, the first printing of 5,000 copies took 17 years to deplete, from 1989 to 2006. There was no feasible way to make updates to all those shrink-wrapped bundles, each comprising 10 copies. Not until about 2005 was it realistic to make any factual repairs before a second printing would finally be ordered.
