Box 88831, Kota Kinabalu, Sabah, East Malaysia. i 1 2 3 o [email protected] (corresponding author), [email protected], [email protected] n Abstract: The insect fauna in Tenompok Forest Reserve, adjacent to Mount Kinabalu in Sabah was surveyed. Nocturnal insect diversity was moderately high, compared to other forest reserves surveyed earlier. Species richness, however, was moderate, with an average of 73 species from 84 individuals recorded from a 1m2 area of the light-trapping cloth. At least 20 Bornean endemic insect species were recorded from this rapid biodiversity assessment, which include 19 moth species and one beetle species. The endemics and other insects of conservaton interest recorded during the survey provide salient informaton to enhance the conservaton efort of this forest which connects Kinabalu Park and the Crocker Range Park. Such informaton provides inputs towards recommendatons on high conservaton value (HCV) of the area that would be incorporated in the formulaton of the forest management plan. Issues afectng the insect fauna and recommendatons on insect diversity enhancement and conservaton are highlighted in this paper. Malay abstract: Satu tnjauan fauna serangga telah dijalankan di Hutan Simpan Tenompok, berhampiran dengan Gunung Kinabalu di Sabah. Kepelbagaian serangga malam adalah sederhana tnggi berbanding dengan hutan-hutan simpan lain yang telah dikaji sebelum ini. Walau bagaimanapun, kekayaan spesies adalah sederhana, dengan purata 73 spesies dari 84 individu yang telah direkodkan dari 1m2 kain puth perangkap cahaya. Sekurang-kurangnya 20 spesies serangga endemik kepada Borneo telah direkodkan dari penilaian kepelbagaian pantas ini, yang merangkumi 19 spesies rama-rama dan satu spesies kumbang. Spesies endemik serta serangga berkepentngan konservasi yang lain memberikan maklumat yang boleh membantu dalam mempertngkatkan usaha konservasi hutan ini, yang menghubungkan Taman Kinabalu dan Taman Banjaran Crocker. Maklumat sebegini membekalkan input terhadap rekomendasi untuk kawasan konservasi bernilai tnggi dalam penyediaan pelan pengurusan hutan. During the present study, a total of 675 moth specimens were collected from the study area which represented 112 species from 16 families and eight super families. Though much of the species has been reported earlier from other parts of India, 15 species were first records for the state of Kerala. The highest species richness was shown by the family Erebidae and the least by the families Lasiocampidae, Uraniidae, Notodontidae, Pyralidae, Yponomeutidae, Zygaenidae and Hepialidae with one species each. The results of this preliminary study are promising; it sheds light on the unknown biodiversity of Vagamon hills which needs to be strengthened through comprehensive future surveys. Russo Abstract This study summarises the known records of the Macrolepidoptera species of the “Bosco Palazzi” area near the municipality of Putignano (Apulia region) in the Murgia mountains in southern Italy. The list of species is based on historical bibliographic data along with new material collected by other entomologists in the last few decades. A total of 207 species belonging to the families Cossidae (3 species), Drepanidae (4 species), Lasiocampidae (7 species), Limacodidae (1 species), Saturniidae (2 species), Sphingidae (5 species), Brahmaeidae (1 species), Geometridae (55 species), Notodontidae (5 species), Nolidae (3 species), Euteliidae (1 species), Noctuidae (96 species), and Erebidae (24 species) were identified.

These volcanic islands were created by an eruption that also led to the formation of the Ulleungdo Islands (located in the East Sea), which are approximately 87.525 km away from Dokdo. Dokdo is important for geopolitical reasons; however, because of certain barriers to investigation, such as weather and time constraints, knowledge of its insect fauna is limited compared to that of Ulleungdo. Until 2017, insect fauna on Dokdo included 10 orders, 74 families, 165 species and 23 undetermined species; subsequently, from 2018 to 2019, we discovered 23 previously unrecorded species and three undetermined species via an insect survey.

And why are they important? What’s the difference between Arthropods and Insects? Most of this guide is comprised of insects. These are animals that have three body segments- head, thorax, and abdomen, three pairs of legs, and usually have wings, although there are several wingless forms of insects. Insects are of the Class Insecta and they make up the largest class of the phylum called Arthropoda (arthropods). However, the phylum Arthopoda includes other groups as well including Crustacea (crabs, lobsters, shrimps, barnacles, etc.), Myriapoda (millipedes, centipedes, etc.) and Arachnida (scorpions, king crabs, spiders, mites, ticks, etc.). Arthropods including insects and all other animals in this phylum are characterized as animals with a tough outer exoskeleton or body-shell and flexible jointed limbs that allow the animal to move. Although this guide is comprised mostly of insects, some members of the Myriapoda and Arachnida can also be found here. Remember they are all arthropods but only some of them are true ‘insects’. Entomologist - A scientist who focuses on the study of insects! What’s bugging entomologists? Although we tend to call all insects ‘bugs’ according to entomology a ‘true bug’ must be of the Order Hemiptera. So what exactly makes an insect a bug? Insects in the order Hemiptera have sucking, beak-like mouthparts, which are tucked under their “chin” when Metallic Green Bee (Agapostemon sp.) not in use.
