Volunteer Trainings Cape Cod National Seashore

Thursday, January 10, 10 am-12 pm “Parks as Classrooms” Training Day. This spring program seeks volunteers Cape-wide for grades 3-5. Volunteers can pick location, subject matter, day of week and time. Call Anita at 508-394-4630, x523 or email [email protected].

Elder Services of Cape Cod & the Islands - Ombudsman Training Monday, January 28 – 30, 2019. We are seeking volunteers for our Long-Term Care Ombudsmen program to advocate for residents of nursing and rest homes. Ombudsmen offer residents a way to voice their concerns and to have their issues addressed. Ombudsman work with the resident and facility staff to resolve issues. Ombudsmen are individuals with compassion and common sense, who give a few hours weekly to help residents live their lives with dignity and respect. There is a particular need for Ombudsman to visit the nursing facilities on Martha's Vineyard and Nantucket. Ombudsmen receive training and support. Tutors & Mentors: The Three R’s program engages volunteers who care about students and want to support and encourage them in reading, math and science. Volunteers work with students individually and in small groups, in literacy, math and science, as well as in book and math clubs. Some volunteers assist teachers in the classroom setting as well. Work one or two hours per week, training is provided and no experience is necessary. We are now recruiting for the 2018 – 2019 school year. Volunteers are needed for reading, math, science and computer skills for elementary schools on the Cape. Book and Math Club leaders are needed in Dennis/Yarmouth schools, Sandwich, Monomoy and Nauset schools. If you have special skills to share (i.e. knitting, painting, creative writing, music, etc.) in an after school enrichment program, tell us about it! 12/6/2018 4:32 PM A Baby Center, Hyannis: Two volunteers are needed to greet clients and help them with paper work and a Stock person is needed for the boutique. Work any Monday, Tuesday or Wednesday for one half-day per week. Must love babies!

American Cancer Society: Road to Recovery program – volunteer coordinators are needed for 5 MA counties to help coordinate with volunteer drivers to get patients to and from lifesaving cancer related appointments. Hours are flexible and coordination can be done from home. Volunteers to drive patients to appointments are always needed.

Barnstable Senior Center: Drivers Wanted! Urgent need for volunteers to drive a 12- passenger, handicapped accessible van, taking seniors to morning or afternoon appointments. Flexible schedule. Training provided. Also, help needed mailing the quarterly Compass Magazine and assisting with special projects.

Cape Abilities, Dennis: Throughout the Holiday Season, the farm stand has a need for volunteers to assist with fun weekend events happening at the retail store and in the yard. Volunteers needed for parking, crafting, food sampling, general store assistance, and in the Greenhouse & Garden Center. Volunteers with social media skills needed to promote new products and help generate sales. Other opportunities also exist in Direct Care, Companionship and on the Human Rights Committee (two hours every other month.) Be an ambassador at Cape Abilities Sensory Film Screenings every third Saturday of the month at Chatham Orpheum Theater. Also a need for Delivery person at the Yarmouth retail store.

Cape & Islands Veterans Outreach Center, Hyannis: One or two volunteers needed to do a “bread run” once a week, usually a Thursday morning, in Hyannis. Takes about one hour. Volunteer will pick up day old bread at local supermarkets and deliver to the Vet’s Center in Hyannis. Call Linda for more information.

Cape Organization for the Rights of the Disabled (CORD), Hyannis: Mobile Food Pantry runs every month for a three- day period. Volunteers needed to drive, ride the bus, help hand out food or assist with loading and unloading. Also looking for office help.

Consumer Assistance Council, Hyannis: Consumer Advocate and Hotline Volunteer. CAC collaborates with the Consumer Advocacy & Response Division (CARD) of the AG's office and provides a place where Cape Cod consumers can call with complaints related to retail stores, debt and debt collection, home improvement contractors, scams, and more. This is a volunteer position requiring a cover letter and resume.

Dennis Council on Aging: needs medical drivers, friendly visitors, thrift shop staff, front desk and Golden Age volunteers.

Eastham Senior Center: Seeking volunteer shuttle drivers to take seniors to Monday “Sit & Be Fit” exercise class at 11 am. Hours are from 10 am – 12 pm.

12/6/2018 4:32 PM Elder Services of Cape Cod & the Islands: Meals on Wheels: Always a need for Meals on Wheels route drivers - current need in Yarmouth, Barnstable, Orleans, Chatham, Wellfleet, & Truro areas. Time commitment is about two hours one morning a week. Back up drivers needed as well. Mileage reimbursement & training is provided. Volunteers needed for the Money Management program. This program is a service which promotes independent living by assisting seniors who are finding it difficult to manage their finances and pay their bills on time. Training is provided. The time commitment is 2-3 hours a month. Ombudsman: Serve as an advocate to residents and their families in long term care facilities. Three day state certificate training is scheduled for January 28 – 30 at the Elder Services office in South Dennis and is provided at no cost.

Family Pantry of Cape Cod, Harwich: Volunteers are needed for customer service, processing clothing and cash register at Second Glance Thrift Boutique: All shifts, but especially Saturdays & Mondays, 9:45 a.m. – 1 p.m. and 12:45 – 5 p.m. The Family Pantry Boutique: Many shifts available on Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday and Saturday. Cape Cod Community College Family Pantry is also looking for volunteers with flexibility to help on Tuesdays from 10 a.m. – 12:30 p.m. and assist with shift coverage.

Flower Angels, South Yarmouth: is actively recruiting compassionate upbeat volunteers. We are looking for people with floral design experience for our workshop. Also available are delivery duties to local nursing homes and office tasks. Minimum three- hour per week commitment on a Monday, Thursday or Friday. Enjoy working in a loving, supportive environment and meet a great group of new friends while brightening the lives of others.

Habitat for Humanity of Cape Cod: Help in a variety of ways at our “Re-Stores” in South Yarmouth and Falmouth. Short, flexible shifts available Monday-Saturday.

Harwich Council on Aging: Needed: Volunteer medical drivers, food delivery people, dining room aids, and front desk greeters, Wednesday afternoons from 1- 4 pm.

HopeHealth Hospice: Needs your Help, Hands, and Heart to serve within your community and congregation. HopeHealth will train volunteers who want to make a lasting difference in the lives of patients and their families experiencing serious illness. “We are not angels – we just help them serve.”

Samaritans of Cape Cod & Islands: Crisis Lines volunteers needed to answer calls at the Falmouth location to provide empathy and compassion to sad and lonely callers. Senior Outreach volunteers to call older adults once or twice a week. Safe Place volunteers to support those who have lost someone to suicide and act as facilitators at monthly meetings. Second Chance group facilitators needed to support friendly meetings with suicide attempt survivors. A Caring Connection volunteers needed to coach and maintain contact with program referrals via phone, text and email. Volunteers to serve on the Board of Directors or help out in office, fundraising and marketing.

12/6/2018 4:32 PM VNA of Cape Cod: Volunteers needed in Dennis for office work, including putting together patient info packets once a week for two to three hours. Repetitive but fun, friendly environment! Volunteers also needed at our award-winning Thriftique shop in South Yarmouth to price, sell and display donated items in our thrift shop.

Yarmouth Senior Center: Brown Bag volunteers needed for about an hour the first Friday of every month to deliver groceries to seniors. Help needed carrying bags to cars on Fridays from 2- 4 pm and also need help setting up for Brown Bag distribution the first Thursday of each month from 2-3:30 pm.

Brewster Conservation Trust: BCT needs assistance with weekly (Tuesdays) property trail projects involving maintenance of existing properties and clearing of new trails. There are also opportunities for Land Stewards. Volunteers will be trained in survey map research and reading, field measuring, types of bounds and survey instruments. Contact Anita.

Cape Cod Medical Reserve Corps, Barnstable: Volunteers needed to assist with clinical and non-clinical projects. Center for Coastal Studies, Provincetown: Benthic Habitat Mapping Project - Sort and identify microscopic organisms found on the bottom of Herring Cove Beach in Provincetown and Barnstable Harbor to determine type and number of species living in Cape sediments. This info is entered into a national database of marine ecosystem classifications. Humpback Whale

Chatham Conservation Foundation: Land Stewardship is a crucial part of protecting CCF properties. Volunteers serve as this growing Foundation’s “eyes and ears” in the field. You will be provided a helpful mobile phone app for facilitating the monitoring process. Contact Anita.

Dennis Conservation Trust: The Town of Dennis Blueberry Patches are in much need of TLC. Team up with AmeriCorps Cape Cod and Dennis Natural Resources Dept. on Friday, January, 25 to tend the Cross Patch on Fieldstone Drive, Dennis and/or on Monday, February 11 to tend the Pond Street Patch, 22 Pond St., West Dennis. Harwich Conservation Trust: HCT needs Land Stewards to keep its town conservation lands clean, wild, protected and beautiful. Help with conservation property monitoring, Boundary Quest, trail work projects, monitoring and invasive plant removal. Contact Anita.

Monomoy National Wildlife Refuge: Friends of MNWR seeks help at its Visitors Center on Morris Island in Chatham. Inform visitors about hiking, birding and beaching options at the Preserve. Volunteers choose a three-hour morning or afternoon shift each week. Contact Anita.

Wellfleet Bay Wildlife Sanctuary: Front Desk position. Be the face of the Sanctuary for newly arriving visitors and share info to generate Gift Shop sales. Choose a four-hour morning or afternoon shift. Training is provided. Contact Anita.

Massachusetts Trustees of the Reservations, Martha’s Vineyard: New Volunteer opportunities include a Beach Steward to monitor Menemsha Hills/Long Point/Cape /Norton Point and assist with clearing of vegetation in trails and along parking areas. The Farm Institute in Edgartown wants a volunteer with a green thumb to maintain its gardens on a weekly basis and is also looking for a Hen Helper to assist in feeding hens, collecting, washing and packaging eggs.
