No. 157-2010 2010 US OPEN ONE OF THE MOST SUCCESSFUL IN HISTORY Eight Americans Win Championship Trophies Attendance Tops 700,000 for the Fourth Time QuickStart Play Format, the Future of 10 and Under Tennis, Featured at US Open for First Time USOpen.org Live Stream and Mobile Apps Accessed by More Fans Than Ever Before White Plains, N.Y., September 14, 2010 – The USTA announced today that the 2010 US Open was one of the most successful tournaments in history. Rafael Nadal became the seventh male player in history to capture a career Grand Slam after defeating Novak Djokovic in the men’s singles final, and Kim Clijsters now has a 21-match winning streak at the US Open after capturing her third women’s singles crown. A record $23.6 million in prize money was distributed, including $950,000 earned in Olympus US Open Series bonus prize money. Clijsters, who earned $2.2 million in total prize money, tied the women’s record for the largest purse in women’s sports history, the same total she earned at the 2005 US Open. Eight Americans also won championship trophies. Mike and Bob Bryan captured the men’s doubles championship, Bob Bryan teamed with fellow American Liezel Huber to claim the mixed doubles title, and Vania King teamed with Yaroslava Shvedova of Kazakhstan to capture her first women’s doubles championship at the US Open. In the US Open junior competition, Lincoln, NE native Jack Sock won the boys singles title by defeating fellow American Denis Kudlow and up-and-comer Sloane Stephens was on the winning girls double team. Finally, David Wagner won a pair of trophies by capturing the quads singles and teaming with fellow American Nicholas Taylor to win the quads doubles as part of the US Open wheelchair competition. For the fourth consecutive year, attendance topped 700,000 at the US Open. In all, 712,976 fans visited the competition, and new records were set in both merchandise and food & beverage sales. Fans attending the event also saw record sponsor-activation on the grounds of the USTA Billie Jean King National Tennis Center including the addition of two restaurants and lounges on-site. Many of the USTA’s major community initiatives were highlighted during the course of the tournament. The QuickStart play format, geared to making the sport easier to learn for young players by encouraging the right-sized equipment be used on the right-sized courts, was showcased several times during the US Open, including at Arthur Ashe Kids’ Day, on Labor Day Saturday on Court 12 and on Louis Armstrong Stadium on Thursday, September 9. The USTA also awarded Charleston, SC a $100,000 grant as the country’s “Best Tennis Town,” as determined by an on-line vote by fans across the country. Finally, USOpen.org, the official website of the tournament powered by IBM, saw significant traffic and activity. Unique visitors exceeded 12.4 million, the second-highest in history, while total visits to the site topped 40 million for only the second time in history. Now in its second year, free live streaming of US Open matches surged, with nearly 2.8 million hours of live streaming viewed an 11% increase over last year, and for-the-first time, the men’s and women’s finals were streamed live in 3D. In its second year, the Official US Open iPhone App was downloaded and/or updated 673,358 times, a 53% increase from its debut in 2009, and USOpen.org also saw record mobile traffic across its mobile-friendly website (m.usopen.org) and the official iPhone App, with more than 30 million page views, a 44% increase over 2009. The US Open’s official Facebook page grew by 33% during the two weeks of the tournament, and by 312% since the conclusion of the 2009 US Open, while the US Open’s official Twitter channel followers grew by 51% during the two weeks of the tournament, and by 158% since the conclusion of the 2009 US Open. # # # The USTA is the national governing body for the sport of tennis in the U.S. and the leader in promoting and developing the growth of tennis at every level -- from local communities to the highest level of the professional game.
