Hvden Dingiswayo Banda: bom , 1925. Educated Secondary School. Trained as bookkeeper and typist. Has travelled in many parts of Africa. Director of the UNIP Youth Brigade, and was a senior official of the party on Copperbelt. Appointed Minister of Housing and Social Development, January 1964.

Lewis Changufu: born Kasama, 1927. Educated Kasama and by correspondence. Printer. Entered politics 1950. Once deported from Zanzibar. Chief National Trustee of UNIP. Has taken course in public relations and leadership in America. A store-owner. Appointed Parliamentary Secretary, Office of Prime Minister, January 1964; then Minister of State, October 1964.

Justin Henry Chimba: born in 1921. Educated to Overseas Cambridge Certificate. Employed by Provincial Administration. After leaving Government, was selected as UNIP representative in Cairo and Dar- es- Salaam. Is the oldest member of Cabinet. Appointed Minister of Labour and Mines, January 1964.

John Chisata: born , 1930. Educated Mine School. Joined N.R. African Mine Workers’ Union in 1950, became Vice-Chairman in 1956 and President in 1961. Attended course in Austria organised by Miners International Federation, and visited America on a Leader Grant. Appointed Parliamentary Secretary, Ministry of Transport and Works, October 1964.

Frank Chitambala: born in Kasama, 1931. Educated Malole Mission, Kasama. Employed 1952 by Civil Aviation Department. Later, Congress divisional secretary in Eastern Province. First interim National Secretary of UNIP; served Dr Kaunda as private secretary. Studied party organisation and public administration in Britain. Appointed Parliamentary Secretary, Ministry of Home Affairs, October 1964.

Jonathan Kalunga Chivunga: born Lundazi, 1924. Educated Training Institute and Munali. Worked in Civil Service 1948-52, commercial firms 1952-6. Became full-time provincial secretary African National Congress, Western Province, 1956-8. President, Union of Shop Assistants, 1959 to date, and Trades Union Con¬gress President 1960. Appointed Parliamentary Secretary, Ministry of Health, January 1964.

Mathias : born Monze, 1930. Educated mission school and Munali. First African to become a Barrister-at-Law when passed Bar Final Exam at Grays Inn, London, 1957. Acting-President of UNIP while Dr Kaunda in prison for political offence. Now National Secretary of 'UNIP. Formerly Minister of Justice. Appointed Minister of Home Affairs, October 1964.

Thakorbhai Lallubhai Desai: born at Surat, Bombay, in 1912. Educated Surat Government High School. Worked as clerk in India for five years, arriving Northern Rhodesia in 1934. Business¬man and property-owner. Member of British India Association of Ndola. Addressed United Nations with Dr Kaunda, April 1962. Elected to Assembly, January 1964 Colonel Sir Stewart Gore-Browne: born 1883. Educated Harrow, Woolwich. First came to N. Rhodesia 1911 as member Anglo- Belgian Boundary Commission. Served France, 1914-18 war, D.S.O., mentioned in despatches. Retired with rank lieutenant- colonel. Settled Shiwa Ngandu, Northern Province, 1921; MLC 1935-51; leader of Unofficials and Nominated Member for African Interests. Resigned from Legco over Federation issue. Joined UNIP 1961, stood as candidate 1962 election. Addressed United Nations, New York, with Dr Kaunda.

Hankey Blackskin Kalanga: born Fort Rosebery, 1926. Educated in , and Johnston Falls Mission school. Nine years as medical assistant with Rhokana Corporation. In 1948, turned to politics, became provincial leader. Studied in Ghana at Ideological and Political Institute. Appointed Parliamentary Secretary, Ministry of Information and Postal Services, October 1964.

Solomon Kalulu: born , 1924. Educated Waddilove College, , where trained as teacher. Former headmaster. Travelled in Europe and America. National Chairman of UNIP. Appointed Minister of Land and Natural Resources, October 1964.

Reuben Chitandika Kamanga: born Fort Jameson, 1929. Educated Munali. Businessman; UNIP representative in Cairo 1960-62. Deputy President of UNIP. Appointed Minister of Labour and Mines, December 1962. Appointed Vice-President of , October 1964.

Simon Mwansa Kapwepwe: bom , 1922. Educated Lubwa Mission. Close friend of Dr Kaunda since boyhood. Teacher. Studied in India and America. National Treasurer of UNIP. Appointed Minister of African Agriculture, December 1962. Became Zambia’s Foreign Minister, October 1964.

Robert Speedwell Makasa: born Chinsali, 1922. Educated Lubwa Mission. Teacher. Entered politics 1950. Was UNIP representative in Tanganyika, where Chairman PAFMECSA Refugee Committee. Took course public administration, Oxford University. Appointed Under-Minister for Northern Province, July 1964.

Peter Wilfred Matoka: born Mwinilunga, 1930. Educated Fort Hare, where gained B.A. degree. Joined government service in 1955 and served as Assistant Executive Officer in Department of Co¬operatives. Later Community Development Officer. Has studied in America. Unsuccessfully contested Mwinilunga constituency for UNIP in 1964. Nominated to Assembly and appointed Minister of Information and Postal Services, October 1964.

Samuel Chinyama Mbilishi: born in North-Western Province, 1918. Educated Chitokoloki Mission. Trained Chalimbana College and worked as teacher for thirteen years, and fourteen years as Native Authority official. Appointed Parliamentary Secretary, Ministry of Land and Natural Resources, October 1964.

Aaron Milner: born in Bulawayo, 1933. Educated Embakwe Mission School, Plumtree. Trained in tailoring, bookkeeping, shorthand. Manager and Chairman N. Rhodesia Euro-African Association. Deputy National Secretary of UNIP. Appointed Minister of State, October 1964.

Elijah Haatukali Kaiba Mudenda: born Choma, 1927. Educated Macha Mission school, Munali and Fort Hare University; graduated Cambridge University. Employed by N.R. Government from 1955-62 as agricultural research officer in plant breeding. Author. Appointed Parliamentary Secretary, Ministry of Agriculture, December 1962. Appointed Minister of Agriculture, January 1964.

Nalumino Mundia: born Kalabo, 1927. Educated in and Munali. Gained scholarship to New Delhi 1949, took degree in commerce there, 1954. Later studied industrial management in America. UNIP Deputy-Treasurer. Appointed Minister of Local Government, January 1964, Minister of Commerce and Industry, October 1964.

Andrew Bob Mutemba: born Kasama, 1929. Entered politics 1948, when teaching with Dr Kaunda at Mufulira. At eighteen, was youngest member of ANC executive. UNIP regional secretary Kitwe- Mufulira. Travelled in Europe. Elected Assembly, April 1964, in by-election, after completing prison sentence for political offence. Appointed Under-Minister for Western Province, July 1964. John Mupanga Mwanakatwe: born Chinsali, 1926. Educated Munali and Adams College, South Africa. First N. Rhodesia African to obtain a degree (B.A.). In 1957 became first N.R. African to be principal of a secondary school. Appointed Parliamentary Secretary, to Ministry of Labour and Mines, December 1962. Appointed Minister of Education, January 1964.

Unia G. Mwila: born Mporokoso, 1930. Educated Munali and Makerere. Master, Makerere Secondary School, part-time lecturer, Makerere College. Teacher, Ndola Senior Secondary School. Secretary of UNIP Parliamentary Caucus. Appointed Parlia¬mentary Secretary, Ministry of Finance, January 1964.

William Nkanza: born Balovale, 1912. Educated Chitokoloki Mission, started teaching 1937. Headmaster Chitokoloki Upper School many years until election as Independent member Legis¬lative Council in 1959. Unsuccessfully stood October 1962 for UNIP. Elected 1964. Appointed Parliamentary Secretary, Ministry of Education, January 1964. Wesley Pillsbury Nyirenda: born Lundazi, 1924. Educated Munali, Pholela College, Natal, and University of London. B.A., Diploma in Education, and B.Sc. (Economics). Teacher since 1955. Principal Monze Secondary School. Appointed Deputy Speaker of Assembly, March 1964. Henry Shamabanse: born 1929 in Broken Hill. Educated St Canisius Secondary School and by private studies. Teacher before turning to politics. Was UNIP regional secretary for Lusaka- until elected to Assembly in 1964. Appointed Under-Minister for Central Province, July 1964.

Rankin Titus Sikasula: born 1932, Mufulira. Educated Kasama and Kivukoni College, Dar es Salaam. Has worked as government clerk, shop manager and political official since 1954. UNIP’s constituency secretary until 1961. Appointed private secretary to , 1962, then Chairman of Zambia Youth Service Board, September 1964.

Munukayumbwa Sipalo: born Mongu, 1929. Educated Sefula Mission and Munali. Scholarship to Delhi University, studying economics. Secretary-general of ZANC. Until 1961, Secretary- General of UNIP. Widely travelled. Appointed Minister of Natural Resources, January 1964, Minister of Health, October 1964.

Axon Jasper Soko: born Fort Jameson, 1930. Educated Chalimbana and Munali. Studied accountancy. Joined Co-operative Department as Inspector 1952-3. Commercial firms in Kitwe 1953-9. Party organiser. Appointed Under-Minister for Eastern Province, July 1964.

James John Skinner: born Dublin, 1923. Educated Trinity College, Dublin, Kings Inn - Barrister-at-Law. Called to Irish Bar 1946. Called to English Bar 1950. Became Q.C. in 1964. Joined UNIP 1960. Deputy- director of Elections, March-September 1962. Appointed Parliamentary Secretary, Ministry of Justice, January 1964, Minister of Justice, October 1964. Nephas Tembo: born Lundazi, 1928. Educated Kafue Training Institute and secondary schools in S. Rhodesia and South Africa. Son of a police inspector. Has worked in Co-operatives and as clerk on Copperbelt. Active in politics since 1952 and been senior official, Western Province. Represented UNIP in .Cairo and travelled Europe and Asia. Trade-unionist. Merfyn Morley Temple: born London, 1919. Educated Earnscat School, Leys School, Cambridge and Richmond College, London. Spent infancy in , since travelled throughout Africa. Arrived N. Rhodesia 1943, as rural missionary in Nambala, near . Introduced first cattle in area, in Chibela Settlement Scheme. One of first explorers of Kafue Gorge. Author. In 1956 became General Secretary United Society for Christian Literature. 1958, President N.R. Christian Council. Same year, deputy-leader Constitution Party. Joined UNIP 1960. Deputy Director of National Youth Service, April 1964.

Charles Henry Thornicroft: born Fort Jameson, 1936. Educated Trafalgar High School, Capetown. Teacher. Resigned from Federal Ministry of Education 1962. Secretary of Coloured Club in Ndola, also Fort Jameson. Was secretary-manager Ndola Community Centre and Social Club. Appointed Parliamentary Secretary to Ministry of Education, January 1964.

Arthur Nutuluti Wina: born Mongu 1930, son of former Ngambcln of Barotseland. Educated Sefula Mission, Munali, Makerere and University of California, where graduated in economics. Served with N.R.G. as Co-operative Officer and Adult Education Ollitci 1955-9. In 1959 returned to America on U.S. exchange visiloi grant. Appointed Parliamentary Secretary to Ministry of I iimmr December 1962. Appointed Minister of Finance, January 1964 Sikota Wina: born Mongu 1931, younger brother of Aiiliui Wum (Finance Minister). Educated Munali, and Fort llure University Worked in N.R.G. Information Department but left to become editor of Drum newspaper and later of African Life. Appointed Parliamentary Secretary to Ministry of Local Government and Social Welfare, December 1962. Appointed Minister of Health, January 1964, Minister of Local Government, October 1964.

Alexander Grey Zulu: born Petauke, 1921. Educated Nyanje Upper School and Madzimoyo. Teacher, later treasury clerk for Nsenga- Ambo Native Authority. Political career started 1944 in S. Rhodesia.
