Alec Vidler On Christian Faith and Secular Despair Born in Rye, Sussex, son of a shipping businessman, Alec Vidler ( 1899‐1991)was educated at Sutton Valence School, Kent, read theology at Selwyn College, Cambridge (B.A. 1921),then trained for the Anglican ministry at Wells Theological College. He disliked Wells and transferred to the Oratory of the Good Shepherd, Cambridge, an Anglo‐Catholic community of celibates, and was ordained priest in 1923. He retained a life‐time affection for the celibate monkish life, never marrying but having a wide range of friends, including Malcolm Muggeridge, who was at Selwyn with him. Muggeridge’s father was a prominent Labourite and Vidler imbibed leftist sympathies in that circle. His first curacy was in Newcastle, working in the slums. He soon came to love his work with working class parishioners and was reluctantly transferred to St Aidan’s Birmingham, where he became involved in a celebrated stoush with the bishop E. W. Barnes, himself a controversialist of note. Vidler’s Anglo‐ Catholic approach to ritual clashed with Barnes’s evangelicalism. Vidler began a prolific career of publication in the 1920s and 30s. In 1931 he joined friends like Wilfred Ward at the Oratory House in Cambridge, steeping himself in religious history and theology, including that of Reinhold Niebuhr and “liberal Catholicism”. In 1939 Vidler became warden of St Deiniol’s Library, Hawarden (founded by a legacy from Gladstone) and also editor of the leading Anglican journal Theology, which he ran until 1964, exerting considerable progressive influence across those years. He also facilitated a number of religious think‐tanks in these, and later, years. -
Visual Art in the English Parish Church Since 1945
Peter Webster Institute of Historical Research Visual art in the English parish church since 1945 [One of a series of short articles contributed to the DVD-ROM The English Parish Church (York, Centre for the Study of Christianity and Culture, 2010).1] Even the most fleeting of tours of the English cathedrals in the present day would give an observer the impression that the Church of England was a major patron of contemporary art. Commissions, competitions and exhibitions abound; at the time of writing Chichester cathedral is in the process of commissioning a major new work, and the shortlist of artists includes figures of the stature of Mark Wallinger and Antony Gormley. It is less well known that this activity is in fact a relatively recent phenomenon. In the early 1930s, by contrast, it was widely thought (amongst those clergy, artists and critics who thought about such things) that there was, in the strictest sense, no art at all in English churches. Of course, the medieval cathedrals and parish churches contained many exquisite examples of the art of their time. The nineteenth century had seen a massive boom in urban church building in the revived Gothic style, with attendant furnishings and decoration. However, the vast bulk of the stained glass, ornaments and church plate of the more recent past was regarded as hopelessly derivative at best, and of poor workmanship at worst. The sculptor Henry Moore wrote of the ‘affected and sentimental prettiness’ of much of the church art of his time. One director of the Tate Gallery argued that if the contents of churches were the only evidence available, ‘our civilisation would be found shallow, vulgar, timid and complacent, the meanest there has ever been.’ Much research remains to be done on that nineteenth century heritage, to determine how justly such charges were laid against it. -

We have been at the forefront in the deliberations which have led to the introduction of the Common Awards. -

He is able to do this because he lives within the curtilage of the church and the College of Bishops in the Diocese of London have given specific permission for priests in his situation to enter their churches. Box 1346 Ann Arbor, Ml 48106- 1346 Abstract This study presents a detailed analysis of the liturgical music of Benjamin Britten (1913- 1976). In addition to several pieces Britten wrote for the Anglican liturgy and one for the Roman Catholic Church, a number of other works, not originally composed for liturgical purpose, but which fonction well in a liturgical setting, are included, providing a substantial repertory which has hitherto received little critical commentary. Although not occupying a place of central importance in the composer’s musical output, it is argued that a detailed examination of this liturgical music is important to form a fuller understanding of Britten’s creative character; it casts additional light on the composer’s technical procedures (in particular his imaginative exploitation of tonal structure which embraced modality, free-tonality and twelve-tone ideas) and explores further Britten’s commitment to the idea of a composer serving society. -

Thomas Paine was introduced to Benjamin Franklin by the third Duke of Richmond, whose Goodwood Estate lies just outside of Chichester. Church Crawling with Barbara Pym ‘Her books are indubitably “churchy”, partly in the sense that church-going frequently occurs and clergymen are among her best characters, and partly from the tacit and unproselytizing assumption that the world divides into those who do and those who do not attend their parish church. The ethos is always decently Anglican, but this too is taken for granted and no hint of doctrinal or emotional problems is intruded upon the reader. Religion, for Miss Pym’s characters, involves no anguish of conscience (“social” or personal), no dark night of the soul, but decisions about what vestments should be worn on Mid-Lent Sunday, what shall be served for luncheon on Fridays in the clergy-house, who is to query that enigmatic entry in the Church accounts, and “that rather delicate affair of the altar brasses and the unpleasantness between Miss Jenner and Miss Beard”. … Her treatment of religion suggests, in fact, a rather unusually strong, though reserved, religious sense.
