Because of their participation in FIRST, students have attended universities like Harvard, MIT, CalTech, CMU, UT, West Point, and UPenn. In the past five years our gender distribution has shifted from 20/80 to 50/50, allowing everyone a chance to develop as a part of our team. Our alumni volunteer at regionals and mentor other FRC teams upon graduation. Describe the impact of the FIRST program on your community with special emphasis on the 2015/2016 year and the preceding two to five years We have reached over 700K people in the past 5 years through community outreach efforts such as Comicpalooza, FIRST Pitch, Mini Maker Faire, Sci://Tech exposition, local news, and more. In 2014, we worked with our local government to create The Woodlands Robotics Day. Recently, our community passed an education bond to create not one, but three robotics labs in our area. The largest of these is a 2.5M dollar facility that will serve as a center for all district robotics activities. Team's innovative or creative method to spread the FIRST message To appeal to broader audiences, Texas Torque has formed a sports initiative that has partnered us with two major league sports teams, the Houston Astros and the Houston Rockets. On a national scale, we made FIRST loud to 21M people by opening the 2013 Macy's Day Parade, and were featured by the Fox and Friends morning show, reaching an additional 1.6M people. Furthermore, Digital Kitchen chose us to represent FIRST in their documentary, RoboLeague, which has reached UVerse's 4.3M subscribers. Describe examples of how your team members act as role models and inspire other FIRST team members to emulate Our team boasts the best and brightest in the past 5 years we have had 11 National Merit Finalists, 14 Eagle Scouts, and 5 Intel ISEF Finalists. As District Robotics Coach, our lead mentor inspires younger students to pursue STEM paths. Additionally, he made a recommendation to the UIL council on behalf of FIRST, ensuring greater team inclusion within the new UIL activity. Furthermore, the Texas House, Senate, and Governor have all issued proclamations recognizing our team's achievements. Describe the team's initiatives to help start or form other FRC teams Our team has introduced FRC to Norway. With the help of an alumnus, we have helped our Norwegian prerookie FRC team build a copy of our 2014 robot. This completed robot was then presented to the Norwegian Minister of Technology at Norway's national tech conference. More locally, we have passed a bond to create 3 new robotics centers in our area. These centers are aimed at both supporting existing FIRST teams and creating new FRC teams. Describe the team's initiatives to help start or form other FIRST teams (including Jr.FLL, FLL, & FTC) Texas Torque has started 46 FLL teams in our area in the past 5 years. We reach out to young students through our annual LEGO Mindstorm based summer camps. Within our school district, FLL has recently been integrated with the middle school PreAP science curriculum. Our lead mentor also created an electronics and robotics course that is taught at a local high school. In addition, students who attend our district's magnet school receive high school credit hours for their participation in FRC. Describe the team's initiatives on assisting other FIRST teams (including Jr.FLL, FLL, FTC, & FRC) with progressing through the FIRST program As part of our aim to generate excitement for STEM, we run and host annual FIRST events. Our FLL qualifier is the largest in Texas, with over 40 teams in attendance. In an effort to provide more experience to growing FLL teams, we created one of the first ever FLL offseason events in Texas, "Spring FLLing." In addition, we run and host The Remix, our annual FRC offseason competition. Here we have hosted various workshops about roboRIO beta testing, awards, and FIRST UIL in Texas. Describe how your team works with other FIRST teams to serve as mentors to younger or less experienced FIRST teams (includes Jr.FLL, FLL, FTC, & FRC teams) Texas Torque embraces the spirit of cooperation through our interactions with FLL and FRC teams. We mentored 21 FLL programs this past year up from 13 in 2015 and 3 in 2014 in addition to working with FLL teams in Scandinavia. We also work to assist teams at competition, publish resources on our website, and send the contents of our safety program to interested teams. Additionally, we worked as a roboRIO beta tester in both 2015 and 2016. Describe your Corporate/University Sponsors Halliburton/Anadarko/NRG/NEMA Enclosures/Subsea 7/Crow Corp/Sherry and Alan Coats/Texas Workforce Commission/DS SolidWorks & College Park HS Describe the strength of your partnership with your sponsors with special emphasis on the 2015/2016 year and the preceding two to five years Texas Torque has maintained close relations with our sponsors. We regularly present at our sponsor's events, including Anadarko Children's Day, Rockwell Automation Fair, and Halliburton's international meeting, HalAcademy. Furthermore, Subsea7 provides safety mentorship and student scholarships based on their core values. To further support team members, our sponsors often extend internships that later develop into jobs. In order to maintain sponsor ties, we host an annual Sponsor Open House. Describe how your team would explain what FIRST is to someone who has never heard of it FIRST is a robotics program that encourages students of all ages to explore and apply the fundamental concepts of engineering. By pairing motivated students with skilled professionals, FIRST emphasizes the importance of collaboration within STEM and the world at large. FIRST strives to equip the next generation with knowledge and experience, providing a challenging yet supportive environment for passionate individuals to improve their skills and grow as the leaders and innovators of tomorrow. Briefly describe other matters of interest to the FIRST judges, if any We volunteer at organizations such as the Montgomery County Women's shelter, Angel Reach, and Products for Peyton. Our team held a toy drive to donate 60 LEGO kits to hospitalized children. In 2015, we created and distributed the first set of Texas team trading cards, which celebrated the robots of all the Texas FRC teams that qualified for the world championship. This past year, Congressman Kevin Brady served as a keynote speaker at our offseason competition. Team Captain/Student Representative that has doublechecked this submission. Reagan Spexarth Essay Here at Texas Torque, we are a team. A team that has evolved over the years to fit the needs of our students and our community. A team that is in a constant state of progress and expansion. A team that undergoes internal growth with the aim of increasing our impact on others. A team that strives to improve the world around us. As we have developed, our community has recognized and responded to our growing impact. As such, we advocated for the creation of new robotics centers throughout our district. Our team actively worked alongside our Superintendent in order to get these new facilities on the 2015 county education bond. Texas Torque team members then drew up renderings of the new facilities and advocated for the addition of new machinery such as HAAS mills, table routers, computer labs, and lathes. We then campaigned for the bond by going out to polling locations in order to promote our cause. The bond passed with 63% of the vote and allocated not one, but three new robotics labs for our district. The largest of these is a 2.5 million dollar central robotics center. These new facilities ensure a future not only for our team, but also for robotics as a whole within our district. In line with this trend of educational improvement, Texas Torque has worked within our district to promote STEM education. Team members inspired our school district to create the position of District Robotics Coach, a position that is currently held by our lead mentor, Scott Rippetoe. This position has helped him to facilitate robotics participation throughout our area, particularly to younger elementary school students who have yet to experience FIRST. Additionally, our lead mentor has created a comprehensive robotics curriculum that is taught at a district high school, allowing older students a chance to develop their technical skills. Our team also integrated FIRST into the advanced curriculum of our local charter high school, The Academy of Science and Technology. Students here are able to earn high school local credit in recognition of their participation in the FRC program. These efforts have allowed us to develop and improve STEM and robotics education within local schools. Our team further expands our influence by creating new avenues for ourselves in government. In 2013, we were recognized by Texas Senate and House resolutions (Senate 44 and House 13R3581) and by Governor Rick Perry. The next year, we made an even bigger impact by having State Senator Steve Toth in our lab. We toured the statesman around our facility and were able to speak to him about our Texas State Robotics Day proposal.
