Pomerelle Post Trip Report For those who did not make our first Pomerelle trip, we regretfully tell you, “You should have been there.” It was fabulous. We were greeted by 4 inches of fresh powder that had fallen over night, and another inch or two accumulated while we were there. At the end of the day we were still cutting untracked snow. We plan two trips to Pomerelle each year. Don’t miss out on our second trip scheduled for Saturday, February 28th. Thanks to the club subsidy and a great rate from Pomerelle, these are our least expensive trips; only $15 for adults and $10 for juniors. That price includes both a lift ticket and a 1 hour lesson. Nordic area report: The Idaho Falls Ski Club is pleased to announce we have an agreement with the Forest Service to maintain the warming huts at the Kelly Canyon Nordic Area. The Ski Club will also help with some of the trail maintenance and to provide maps. This season, grooming of the main access roads will be provided by Kelly Canyon Resort, with help from the Forest Service as needed. Kelly Canyon Resort also provides parking 7 days a week for nordic skiers and snowshoers for a fee. The parking lots and lodge at Kelly Canyon are private property, and we appreciate their work to make the trails easily accessible to all users. Contact Neil Brown with Kelly Canyon Ski Resort at 538-6251 for information concerning parking. All huts and trails are open to the general public, and the Kelly Mountain hut can be reserved for over night stays by contacting Aaron Cary at (509) 389-1542 or email at [email protected] Setting up the Huts 3 Beneath those beautiful white slopes lurk the avalanche dragons. The threat of those dragons is very real, but it is a myth that they strike without warning. True, these beasts are not fully predictable, but usually there are clues when they are lying in wait to strike. Do you know the clues to look for? If you play outside of resort boundaries, you owe it to yourself to learn about these ruthless killers. Wray and Lani Landon graciously organize two events each year to equip people for assessing avalanche dangers. The first is the Avalanche Awareness Night, an evening presentation offered in early December that introduces avalanche fundamentals and discusses back-country decision basics. This event is free to the public and has tremendous support from the local vendors listed below who provide over $4000 worth of prizes for the evening. Please thank Landon’s and the vendors for the gifts and their interest in avalanche safety. The second event is formal Avalanche training, and alternates yearly between either a 24 hour Level 1 training course, or a shortened Level 1 refresher course. This year is the refresher, and the class schedule for January 22nd and 24th is nearly full. If you are interested, contact Landon’s at 525-5277. Both the Avalanche Awareness and Level 1 training are taught by the American Avalanche Winner of the Big Sky lodging and lift tickets, Greg Weatherby with host Lani Landon Institute. This educational event was held December 3 and provided information that served as a refresher for experienced winter backcountry travelers while also providing basic knowledge for those considering the backcountry. Sarah Carpenter and Don Sharaf, owners of the Institute, split the evening between avalanche basics, a checklist approach to decision making, and a discussion of this year’s snowpack in the Tetons. The night ended with 52 door prizes. Many in the crowd of 90 left not only smarter about the risks of winter backcountry travel but also with smiles on their faces from the prizes.     Backcountry Skiing – Spots to Go from Beginner to Advanced Idaho Falls Ski Club – Brian Edgerton (2/2/2017) Local skiers have numerous choices for backcountry ski/snowshoe day trips. Before you go, check weather, trail conditions, and access fees on the Web. Pack gear for safety and comfort. Essential gear includes weather resistant, layered clothing, daypack with trail snacks, plenty of water, collapsible shovel, emergency blanket, small tarp for shelter, compass/GPS, extra mittens/gloves, cell phone (powered only when needed), and fire starter. Inform friends where you’re going and when you’ll return. Whenever possible, go with buddies so you have recovery backup. See the Idaho Falls Ski Club webpage with Nordic Area maps link at https://ifskiclub.com/trails-maps- guides/ for location and trail map information for local backcountry areas. Here’s a short list of backcountry spots for cross-country skiing/shoeing: Kelly Canyon Nordic Area: Park near the Kelly Mountain Ski Area ($5.00/car fee) and ski up the forest road for access to 17 miles of mostly groomed trails. Watch for trail markers and print the trail map from the Ski Club website before going. There’s a warming and overnight hut (reservations required) on the Kelly Mountain trail. Park 'n Ski Trails in Island Park: Scenic, rolling groomed trails including Brimstone, Buffalo River, and Fall River Ridge near Bear Gulch/Mesa Falls. Harriman State Park: Scenic groomed trails, historic warming cabin and yurts with numerous wildlife viewing opportunities! Caldera Rim Trails – This trail system is north of Ashton half way up Highway 20 on the Ashton Hill.

And with the paperless passport option, all you have to do is pull it up on your Pomerelle* smartphone to show at the ticket oce. Of course you can always print it out Schweitzer Mt. Resort at home and bring it with you if need be. Either way, your kid gets to ski free! INTRODUCTION Skiing is a unique and special sport in which an individual skier's abilities are constantly pitted against a changing winter mountain envi- ronment, ranging from gentle groomed trails to steep, ungroomed slopes. The essence of skiing is the continual challenge of making suc- cessful, individual assessments about one's own abilities in light of the available terrain choices and varying snow conditions. Fueled by a significant growth in the popularity of the sport as a major recreational activity, ski area operators have invested millions of dollars in technological advances to develop, operate and maintain their areas. Not surprisingly, the ski industry, in general, has become an im- portant factor in the economies of many communities and states.
