THE COFFIN CORNER: Vol. 18, No. 2 (1996) BUBBA SMITH: ALL TOO REAL by Mike Gershman "When hearing tales of Bubba Smith, You wonder, is he man or myth?" -- Ogden Nash Quarterbacks who faced a charging Charles "Bubba" Smith generally found him -- at 6'8", 280 pounds -- all too real. A legend in East Lansing, Smith was a two-time All-America at Michigan State and an All-Pro before a freak accident hampered his effectiveness and shortened his playing career. He was born in Beaumont, Texas, and his father, coach Willie Ray Smith, bred three All-State Smiths -- Willie Ray, Jr., Tody, and Bubba. Willie Ray, Sr., made Charlton Pollard a perennial power in Texas school football; the school was 11-0 Bubba's senior year, and recruiters wore out the rugs in the Smith household until he decided on MSU. As a sophomore, he starred on a team that yielded just 76 points in eleven games. In 1965, MSU beat UCLA, 13-3, shut out Penn State, 23-0, and held Michigan to minus 51 yards rushing. Before the Ohio State game, Buckeye coach Woody Hayes warned that his team would run directly at Bubba; Smith stuffed the running attack, and MSU won, 32-7. The Spartans beat Notre Dame, 12-3, in South Bend to finish unbeaten but lost a Rose Bowl rematch to UCLA, 14-12. Despite the loss, Smith was called "the Deacon Jones of the college ranks" and was a consensus All-America selection. In 1966, Michigan State won its first nine games. The day before MSU was to play undefeated Notre Dame for the national championship, Smith roared by the Irish practice and was jailed on the eve of the Big Game.

  • 1967 APBA PRO FOOTBALL SET ROSTER the Following Players Comprise the 1967 Season APBA Pro Football Player Card Set
1967 APBA PRO FOOTBALL SET ROSTER The following players comprise the 1967 season APBA Pro Football Player Card Set. The regular starters at each position are listed first and should be used most frequently. Realistic use of the players below will generate statistical results remarkably similar to those from real life. IMPORTANT: When a Red "K" appears in the R-column as the result on any kind of running play from scrimmage or on any return, roll the dice again, refer to the K-column, and use the number there for the result. When a player has a "K" in his R-column, he can never be used for kicking or punting. If the symbol "F-K" or "F-P" appears on a players card, it means that you use the K or P column when he recovers a fumble. Players in bold are starters. If there is a difference between the player's card and the roster sheet, always use the card information. The number in ()s after the player name is the number of cards that the player has in this set. See below for a more detailed explanation of new symbols on the cards. • NORM SCHACHTER in SUPER BOWL V the Official Version
THE COFFIN CORNER: Vol. 26, No. 2 (2004) Super Bowl V is remembered as the “Blunder Bowl”. The Colts beat the Cowboys 16-13 with five seconds to play, in a game filled with turnovers, miscues and costly penalties. Some NFL legends at that game – Bubba Smith, Herb Adderley, Johnny Unitas – need no introduction. There was a third team on the field that day, with NFL greats like Schachter, Marion, Graf, Fette – guys with a combined 15 Super Bowl appearances. This is their story … NORM SCHACHTER IN SUPER BOWL V The Official Version By Mark L. Ford Norm Schachter had made it to his second Super Bowl. He and five other outstanding pros had gone to Miami because they were the best of the 1970 season. They were the officiating crew, and Schachter was the NFL’s best referee that year. The mistakes of Baltimore and Dallas that day were legendary, but the “third team” was nearly flawless. “You have to be perfect the first game, then get better in every game the following weeks,” Schachter wrote in his 1981 autobiography, Close Calls. While the Colts and Cowboys were beset by one mistake after another, the Zebras could not afford to be wrong even once, especially not in the Super Bowl. The NFL didn’t release the names of the officials until the week of the game. The crew was one of the best assembled for a championship: #56 NORM SCHACHTER, Referee #22 PAUL TREPINSKI, Umpire #26 ED MARION, Head Linesman #39 JACK FETTE, Line Judge #34 FRITZ GRAF, Field Judge #70 SONNY GAMBER, Back Judge Schachter and his five teammates assembled at midfield with the captains from Dallas and Baltimore.

  • Temple Hesed Abraham Sports Dinners
Honoring and Preserving the Sports History of Chautauqua County 15 West Third Street - Jamestown, NY 14701 March 2018 Temple Hesed Abraham Sports Dinners The Men’s Club of the Temple Hesed Abraham synagogue of Jamestown hosted a celebrity sports dinner as a fundraiser from 1952 through 1977. A “who’s who” of sports stars trekked to the Crystal Ballroom in the Hotel Jamestown. Through the efforts of such men as Si Goldman, Ben Rosenberg, Jack Haber, and Seymour Minsker, among others, the city, for one night anyway, might as well have been New York, Los Angeles or Chicago. Along the way, such stars as Joe Louis, Jim Brown, Mickey Mantle, Pete Rose, Jesse Owens, Terry Bradshaw, Bob Gibson and Roberto Clemente visited Jamestown. Other guests were Gale Sayers, Ernie Banks, Rocky Marciano, Johnny Unitas, Joe Paterno, Richard Petty, Bubba Smith and Howard Cosell. Whitey Ford, Jim Bouton, Mercury Morris, Jim Palmer, Larry Csonka, Jim Kiick, Denny McClain, Floyd Little, Chuck Foreman and Alan Page also appeared at various times during the 24 years of dinners. Use this link for a complete listing of all the attendees: http://www.chautauquasportshalloffame.org/TempleHesedAbraham.pdf. The 1956 Temple Hesed Abraham All-Star Sports Night had a particularly interesting list of guests highlighted by famed baseball player Jackie Robinson, television stars Lucille Ball and husband, Desi Arnaz, and University of Pittsburgh football star, Jim McCusker, a future CSHOF inductee. Lucy and Desi’s appearance at the sports dinner coincided with the promotional visit to Ms. Ball’s hometown for the premiere of the movie “Forever Darling.” CSHOF inductee and former owner of the Jamestown Falcons, John Jachym, was instrumental in securing the appearance of his friend, Jackie Robinson.
