For the Young at Heart: Preview of Hansel and Gretel | Sunday, November 19, 3 pm Based on the fairy tale published by the brothers Grimm, Humperdinck’s opera Hansel and Gretel never fails to delight audiences young and old. Join Maestro Peter Jaffe for a preview of the Stockton Opera’s production, anticipating the fully staged performances on January 12 and 14. To be sung in English, this timeless tale of enchantment is rich with the melodies and warmth of the Romantic tradition—the story comes to life with charm and a smile. Maestro Jaffe brings musical examples, taking us through the historical background, plot, and musical elements of this beloved favorite. Questions are welcomed at the end of the hour. Get creative at the Haggin! 2nd Saturday events are designed for children ages 5-12, and feature hands-on events for families. Activities include art projects, interactive programs and museum-wide events. Reservations are not required, but seating is available on a first come, first served basis. Materials and activities are included with regular admission. Deborah Wise will serve as the Museum’s accountant. She has over twenty-five years of accounting experience and holds a Bachelors of Science in business administration from John F. Kennedy University. “I’m thrilled for the opportunity to apply my knowledge and skills to an organization whose focus is to educate the public about art and history. Museums such as the Haggin provide a peaceful haven in an often chaotic world. It’s an honor to be joining the team,” explained Wise. In her free time, Wise can often be found on the water paddling her stand-up paddleboard, or in the garden, where her passion for healthy eating is evident in the organic vegetables she grows year round. This special exhibition, provided by the Reading Public Museum, gives visitors a unique look into the many approaches and styles of the American impressionism. This collection of lyrical landscapes, ranging from snow- covered hills to sun-filled harbors and seascapes, penetrating portraits, and remarkable still life paintings documents an important moment in the history of American art. It includes more than 90 total works, including over 70 oil paintings and nearly 30 works on paper dating from the golden age of American Impressionism, the 1880s through the 1940s. A wide range of approaches to impressionism in the earliest twentieth century, including an abiding interest in capturing the effects of light and atmosphere in loosely brushed compositions, is explored. Leading artists of the movement include William Merritt Chase, Childe Hassam, Ernest Lawson, Julian Alden Weir, John Twachtman, Chauncey Ryder, Frank W.
