Mississippi Braves rally past Chattanooga Lookouts

Chattanooga Times Free Press– 4/21/15

Chattanooga Lookouts starting pitcher Alex Wimmers allowed one hit in five innings, but relievers D.J. Johnson and Jake Reed combined to allow six Mississippi runs in the final two innings and the host Braves won 6-5 in Southern League baseball Monday night. Mallex Smith's two-run double to right field highlighted a four-run eighth inning for the Braves, and Reed was given a 5-4 lead in the ninth but promptly gave up a Seth Loman single to center and a David Rohm triple to right. Rohm scored on Steve Rodriguez's fielder's choice. Miguel Sano and Dalton Hicks drew bases-loaded walks for Chattanooga (6-4) in the third inning, and Travis Harrison followed with a single to left that scored Jorge Polanco and Sano and gave the Lookouts a 4-0 lead. Polanco homered to lead off the fifth inning to extend Chattanooga's advantage to 5-0. Game two of the five-game series in Mississippi is tonight at 8 EDT. Tyler Duffey (0-0, 0.00 ERA) is the scheduled starting pitcher for the Lookouts, with (0-1, 2.35) scheduled for the Braves. Duffey was named Monday as the Southern League's inaugural pitcher of the week. In his first two starts, Duffey struck out 18 batters and allowed just one walk in 13 2/3 scoreless innings. Outfielder Max Kepler, a top-15 Minnesota Twins prospect, was added Monday to Chattanooga's roster. The Berlin, Germany, native had played in six games and collected six hits with Fort Myers of the high Single-A Florida State League.

Cardinals beat Miracle, 4-3, in ten innings

Fort Myers Miracle– 4/20/15

JUPITER, Fla. (April 20, 2015) - The Fort Myers Miracle fell to the Palm Beach Cardinals, 4-3, at Roger Dean Stadium on Monday evening. Tied 3-3 entering the bottom of the tenth, Miracle reliever Madison Boer began his third inning after pitching perfect eighth and ninth frames. After getting the first out, Boer (1-1) clipped C.J. McElroy with a 1-1 pitch. McElroy stole second base, but Boer struck out Mason Katz to record the second out. The Miracle then decided to intentionally walk Bruce Caldwell and bring up Luke Voit. On a 1-1 delivery, Voit hit a ground ball up the middle and McElroy raced home to give the Cardinals a 4-3 win. Fort Myers took the early lead in the second on four consecutive singles. Bryan Haar doubled into right field to start the inning against Palm Beach starter Jimmy Reed. Mitch Garver then sliced a 2-1 pitch down the first base line to score Garver. Aderling Mejia followed with a single through the left side and Alex Swim singled in Garver to put the Miracle up by two. After Michael Quesada popped out in foul ground, Engelb Vielma hit into a fielder's choice that brought in Mejia and put the Miracle up 3-0. In the fifth, the Cardinals answered off Miracle starter Luke Westphal. Juan Herrera looped a single into center field to start the inning and Robelys Reyes followed with a bunt single. After McElroy dropped a base hit to center, the Cardinals loaded the bases for Katz. On a 3-1 pitch, Katz pulled a ground ball fair down the third base line and into the left field corner to empty the bases and tie the game, 3-3. Tim Shibuya entered out of the Miracle bullpen with two runners on after a walk to Caldwell and induced a 6-4-3 double play. Shibuya then struck out to end the inning. Tossing two more scoreless frames, Shibuya finished with three punch outs. After giving up the three runs to the Miracle in the second, Reed settled down to retire 16 consecutive hitters before allowing a hit to Quesada in the seventh. Fort Myers could not post any runs on the Cardinals bullpen arms of Kevin Herget and Josh Lucas. Pitching a scoreless tenth, Lucas (1-0) got the win. The Miracle (5-7) return to Roger Dean Stadium for a 6:35 p.m. first pitch against Palm Beach (8-4) on Tuesday evening. Fans can listen to the broadcast at www.miraclebaseball.com with the "Voice of the Miracle" Brice Zimmerman. The MiracleBaseball.com pregame show begins at 6:10 p.m.

Kohl Stewart blazing a path to the bright lights

Fort Myers Miracle– 4/18/15

FORT MYERS, Fla. - Right-hander Kohl Stewart, the Minnesota Twins' fourth-ranked prospect according to , was not always sure that he would be playing baseball. Before the Twins took Stewart with the fourth overall pick in the 2013 draft, the Houston, Texas native committed to Texas A&M to play quarterback. The decision between football and baseball was not an easy one for Kohl, who grew up surrounded by Aggies. So when he received the offer to play quarterback for Texas A&M the right-hander signed a national letter of intent in February of 2013. Shortly after being drafted by Minnesota, he notified the Aggies that his football days were over. With the deadline to sign after the draft set for July 12, Stewart inked his $4.544 million signing bonus with the Twins on June 20. "It was an exciting time, I loved playing football. It's an exciting sport," stated Stewart. "When I was a little kid growing up, my dream was to pitch in the big leagues. It was never to play quarterback in the NFL. It was never to play college football. That was something that was just sprung on me in high school and the offers started coming, and I had a decision to make." However, Stewart hasn't forgotten his love of football. The third-year player threw a football during the offseason to help strengthen his shoulder that he injured at the end of last season. "Looking back it wasn't a hard choice because I've had a dream my whole life and the Twins came and decided to take me. They gave me an opportunity that I couldn't pass up." Football isn't the only thing that has been in the way of Stewart's dream of making it to the big leagues. The Miracle ace was diagnosed with type one diabetes as a child. Diabetes prevents the body from producing insulin, which is a hormone that is needed to convert sugar, starches and other food into energy needed for daily life. "I was diagnosed when I was eight, so pretty much my whole life and playing career it's something that I've dealt with," said Stewart. "It's just another one of those things that I have to take care of. It's almost become second nature now, it's something I wake up and I have and I deal with. It's another part of my routine."

9

When the burly right-hander gets ready for a start he has to make sure that he is not having issues with his body. Stewart has to pay special attention to nutrition and how he takes care of himself, so he can go about his normal routine on the diamond. "This is something that is only going to help me and having diabetes made me grow up pretty quick," continued Kohl. "It really made me self- conscious about the things I put in my body and how I am going to get to my goal. I think having diabetes has been a blessing in disguise." Once he ensures that his body is ready for the game, the top prospect takes the mound with a key goal, which is to quickly establish his overpowering fastball; which can reach 96 MPH. He also shows a two seamer which forces ground ball outs and ranges from 90-92 MPH. Once he slings the two different fastballs to batters, he looks to dominate with a hard slider with a changeup mixed in. Now that baseball is the only sport that Stewart focuses on, he has started to work on a fifth pitch, a slow breaking curveball that drops down 75 MPH, which is around 20 MPH slower than his fastball. The pitch is new to Kohl, who really started working on the curve last year in the minors. "I like to establish my fastball. I have a pretty good two-seam that I like to mix in," said Stewart. "I also have a slider, changeup and curve. I have a lot of confidence in all three catchers that we have [on the Miracle roster]. I worked with all three of them last year and they all know how to call a game." Stewart picked up his curveball when he was pitching in the Gulf Coast League on the other side of the CenturyLink Sports Complex just two seasons ago. That hasn't stopped him from using it with precision. In his start against the Tampa Yankees on April 15, Kohl established his four-seam and two-seam fastball early and often before dropping in his 75 MPH curve to keep the Yankees off balance. In total, the burly right-hander forced 14 ground ball outs and only allowed one earned run in eight innings. Alex Swim is one of those catchers that has worked with Stewart's live arm before and he knows what it takes to catch the top prospect. "The biggest challenge with catching Kohl is that every pitch he throws is competitive," said Swim. "He wants to do so well that you have to calm him down and get him through the first couple of innings since he is so amped up." Swim also knows that it does not take the right-hander long to learn a new pitch. Not only is the curveball new, but Kohl developed his two seam fastball over the summer to expand his repertoire to five pitches. "He has great stuff," remarked Swim. "You just have to let him settle down to let his natural ability to take over. This offseason he really worked on his two-seamer. It shows because that thing was moving from side to side and should be a dominating pitch for Kohl." Dominating. A word that Twins and Miracle fans alike hope stays with Kohl Stewart in his prospect journey and march to the bright lights at Target Field.

Gordon’s big day lifts Kernels

Cedar Rapids Kernels– 4/20/15

BURLINGTON, IOWA - Nick Gordon had three hits and drove in three runs as the Kernels topped Burlington 5-2 on Monday at Community Field. The shortstop went 3-for-3 at the plate, driving in runs with a single and two sacrifice flies. Tanner English also had a big day at the plate as he recorded three hits and scored two runs. The win allowed the Kernels (8-4) to avoid the sweep and salvage one of the three games in the series. The team now travels to Wisconsin for a three-game series against the Timber Rattlers, an affiliate of the Milwaukee Brewers. Jared Wilson (2-0) recorded the win on the hill for the Kernels, going five innings. He allowed one run on four hits while striking out three and walking four. The Kernels scored the first run of the game in the third inning to take a 1-0 lead. Brian Navarreto began the inning with a walk and later scored on Nick Gordon's RBI sacrifice fly to center. Cedar Rapids extended their lead to 2-0 in the fourth inning. Again, the inning began with a walk as Max Murphy drew the free pass to reach first base. After a groundout to move him into scoring position, Murphy scored when T.J. White reached on a fielding error by Bees shortstop Jake Yacinich. Gordon drove in his second run of the day in the fifth inning as the Kernels scored in their third consecutive inning to move in front 3-0. Gordon's RBI single up the middle brought home Tanner English, who singled to begin the inning and moved to second base on a sacrifice bunt by Zack Granite. Burlington (7-5) got on the board in the fifth inning with a RBI single to left by Andrew Daniel, making the score 3-1. The hit scored Jake Yacinich, who singled and stole second base to get into scoring position. 10

The Kernels scored twice in the seventh inning to move ahead 5-1. English began the inning with a single, his third hit of the day. He quickly stole second base and scored on Zack Granite's RBI triple to right-center. Granite scored on Gordon's third run batted in on the afternoon, a RBI sacrifice fly to right. Burlington scored a run in the ninth inning and brought the tying run to the plate. With the bases loaded after two singles and a walk, Yacinich scored on a RBI sacrifice fly by Zach Houchins, cutting the Kernels lead to 5-2. However, a line out then ended the game, leaving two on base. Michael Theofanopoulos pitched two scoreless innings in relief for Cedar Rapids, notching his second hold. He allowed one hit while striking out two and walking two. C.K. Irby went the final two innings, allowing one run on three hits while striking out one and walking one. Michael Bolaski (0-2) suffered the loss for Burlington, allowing three runs (two earned) in five innings of work. The Kernels now head to Wisconsin for a three-game series against the Timber Rattlers, the Midwest League affiliate of the Milwaukee Brewers. Tuesday's game begins at 6:35 p.m. LHP Mat Batts (1-0, 1.54) takes the hill for the Kernels while LHP Zach Hirsch (0-1, 3.00) starts for Wisconsin. Southern notes: Sano returning to form

MiLB.com– 4/20/15

A year after Tommy John surgery on his right elbow, third baseman Miguel Sano's arm is as impressive as ever. "It's still an eight," said Chattanooga manager Doug Mientkiewicz, putting it at the top of the scouting chart. Sano has retained his prodigious power, too. That was shown when he homered Opening Night and then hit a grand slam in the Lookouts' seventh game of the Southern League season. That doesn't mean, though, that the No. 12 prospect on MLB.com's Top 100 is all the way back to where he was before he hurt his arm. "He missed an entire year," Mientkiewicz said. "It's going to take some time." Sano had just four singles to go with his two homers in Chattanooga's first nine games, and he was batting .200 with 10 strikeouts in 30 at- bats. The massive 21-year-old from the Dominican Republic certainly remains feared, though. He had drawn seven walks, giving him a .368 on-base percentage. "I don't feel good at the plate yet," Sano said. "It's hard when I missed playing for one year. I'm not really comfortable yet. But I try to get better every day." Sano, who turns 22 on May 11, hit 35 homers in 2013 during a monster season that he split between the Class A Advanced Florida State League and the Double-A Eastern League. But he hurt his right elbow in the Dominican Winter League and had to undergo reconstructive surgery the following March. It wasn't until Spring Training this year that the 6-foot-4 Sano -- rated as Minnesota's No. 2 prospect behind MLB.com's No. 1 overall Byron Buxton -- faced real pitching again. He quickly flashed his old raw power, however. The right-handed hitter belted two homers in six Grapefruit League games for the Twins, connecting off Gerrit Cole of Pittsburgh and Tyler Lyons of St. Louis. Sano was sent to Minor League camp shortly afterward, though, and his potential Major League arrival was certainly delayed by the elbow injury. "You just want him healthy," Mientiewicz said. "If he's on the field, he'll perform. He has the talent." If he hadn't been hurt, Sano might have opened 2014 at Triple-A Rochester. Now a year later, he's back in Double-A with the Twins' new affiliate in the Southern League.

11

There's catching up to do, but Sano at least is on the field again. "He's ready to go -- all day, every day," Mientiewicz said. "So far, he's had no issues whatsoever." "I'm 100 percent," Sano said. "Nothing is bothering me now. I want to be healthy all year." That's the key for Sano as well as center fielder Buxton, his Chattanooga teammate who was limited to 31 games a year ago by a series of injuries. "The only way you get better is by playing," said Mientiewicz, who also managed both at Fort Myers. "They both have some things to work on after missing all that time." Sano certainly needs some fine-tuning defensively at third base, as shown by two early errors. No one questions he'll warm up at the plate, though. "We're working on some things with his swing," said Mientiewicz. "But we know he'll hit. It just takes some time to adjust. This is a tough league for anyone." Zero brigade: Two Chattanooga starters hadn't been scored on through two games and neither was Jose Berrios, the leader of the Lookouts staff as MLB.com's No. 33 prospect and No. 4 on the Minnesota list. D.J. Baxendale, 24, was 2-0 and had given up nine hits and four walks while striking out 12 in 12 1/3 innings. Tyler Duffey, also 24, didn't have a decision but had allowed just six hits and two walks in 13 2/3 innings while striking out 18. Berrios, 20, has been very good as well, just not quite as hard to score on. He was 1-0 with a 3.27 ERA and had 20 strikeouts to four walks in 11 innings over two starts.

12
