The season was something of a turning point with lots of new players welcomed into the club. I’m happy to report some strong improvements throughout the club over the past 12 months, however unfortunately not many of them occurred on the field. This was always going to be a difficult season with such a large turnover in players occurring between seasons. This resulted in Roseville slipping to 11 th on the club championship table. However it wasn’t all bad news on the field, as we successfully fielded 8 sides in season 2014/15 (which is quite an achievement in itself), and first grade retained the Stuart Mathlin Trophy for the sixth straight season. However the two highlights of the season were provided by the young pups and the old bulls, in our Frank Gray (U24s) and Roseville Lords (over 50’s Classics) sides. The Frank Gray side weren’t given much chance of making the finals at the start of the season, even from some within the club. So it was a great achievement to make the finals for the first time in a number a years in the Frank Gray competition and a big congratulations is due to Rhydd and ‘da boyz’ for their achievement this season. At the other end of the spectrum we entered a classics side in the over 50’s competition for the first time, and they didn’t disappoint, outperforming all other team within the club to finish 4 th , and in doing so proving to us all that 55 can be the new 23. As is custom, I’d like to take a moment to congratulate all the award winners but in particular Dan Lenehan, Freddie Oldfield, Salmon Shaukat and Will Delves. I’d also like to congratulate captains: Dan Lenehan, Grant Joslin, Brent Tansley, Neill Miller, Rhydd Burcham, David Baer, Daniel Zatz, Antony Gowthorpe and Laurence Natale. Off the field the committee has had a particularly successful season in the areas of financial management, sponsorship, hosting successful functions and fundraising events such as the ever enjoyable trivia night as well as holding regular post functions and catch ups at the Willoughby Hotel. The committee has improved the clubs financial base, which is arguably the biggest achievement of the club, over the past 12 months. I am incredibly grateful and thankful to all who served the club this past year in any capacity but in particular the captains mentioned above and the management committee consisting of Nick Felton, Neill Miller, John Biviano, Geoff Spruce, Byron Horrell, Rhydd Burcham, Jiggy Kakkad, Will Delves and James Gourley. I am very proud of the achievements of the committee and anticipate further improvements in the coming seasons. Finally I’d like to thank all the players, family, and friends that make Roseville what it is. The best sporting club to play for in Sydney. So a big thank you on behalf of myself, the management committee and the club as a whole. Once again, it’s been a pleasure and a privilege to serve as President and I look forward to an ever improving club in the seasons and years to come. James Reade Department of Economics, University of Reading and Programme for Economic Modelling (EMoD), Institute for New Economic Thinking at the Oxford Martin School October 31, 2014 Abstract Corruption is hidden action which distorts allocations of resources away from competitive outcomes. Hence the detection of such actions is both difficult yet important. In many economic contexts, agent actions are unobservable by principals and hence detection is difficult; sport of- fers a well-measured context in which individual actions are documented in great detail. In recent years the sport of cricket, which records a huge volume of statistics, has been beset by a number of corruption scandals surrounding the fixing of matches. We use 18 one day international (ODI) matches that are known to be fixed by one of the teams involved and anal- yse a wide range of observed statistics from all ODI matches since 1971, in order to determine whether corruption manifests itself in recorded out- comes. We find that corruption does affect a number of observed outcomes in anticipated ways, suggesting that both the increased reporting of statis- tics, and the statistical analysis of them may be a useful tool in detecting corruption.
