Far too often today people call themselves Christians without ever having repented of their sins, without any change in their lives. But, if one isn’t saved from his sins, from what is he saved? Is it not a blessing to turn away from sin? (See Acts 3:26). To repent is for the sinner to recognize and acknowledge his lost sinful condition before a holy and just God. Repentance should not be taken lightly, for God commands it! “(Acts 17:30) He also makes it clear that this is something that every person must do. To be in violation of this is to go directly against what God says He wants men to do. Being born into a religious family, being a member of a church all your life, and keeping religious traditions will not save anyone, if your heart is cold and if you ignore truthfulness and justice. John the Baptist’s enemies had sought to silence him, but the Gospel cannot be silenced. As soon as John had finished his testimony Jesus began His in Galilee. Galilee was at the crossroads of the world and much traffic passed through this little region. It had been assigned to the tribes of Asher, Naptali and Zebulum when the Israelites first came into the land (see Joshua 9). For a long time it had been under Gentile occupation. Isaiah foretold (see Isaiah 9) that the good news of salvation would be proclaimed in this land and reach to the Gentiles. Jesus begins the proclamation of the gospel here to fulfill the Word of God. (Matthew 4:15) The Gospel is the power and wisdom of God: power to change and transform our lives and wisdom to show us how to live as sons and daughters of our Father in heaven. In Romans 2:3. Paul says, “God’s kindness leads us to repentance.” Not God’s anger, not God’s wrath, not God’s vengeance, but God’s kindness leads us to the place where we can say, I need all new things. I repent and I lay aside every burden. I lay aside everything that I have kept in my heart, everything that dirtied my soul, everything that has tarnished my heart. I lay it aside for the surpassing worth of knowing God’s grace. The kingdom is here. God’s presence is in front of each and every one of us. Let us be aware of what a blessing, what a good thing, what a hallowed thing, what a peaceful thing, what a graceful gift it is that He wants to give us. Let us pray that God opens our eyes, ears, heart and mind to receive and experience that newness within ourselves today itself. Read this bulletin online: www.stjosephhouston.org | Published by:Rev. Abraham is asked to entrust himself to this word. Faith understands that something so apparently ephemeral and fleeting as a word, when spoken by the God who is fidelity, becomes absolutely certain and unshakable, guaranteeing the continuity of our journey through history. Faith accepts this word as a solid rock upon which we can build, a straight highway on which we can travel.
