  • Disrupting Doble Desplazamiento in Conflict Zones
Disrupting Doble Desplazamiento in Conflict Zones: Alternative Feminist Stories Cross the Colombian-U.S. Border Tamera Marko, Emerson College Preface ocumentary film has the power to carry the stories and ideas of an Dindividual or group of people to others who are separated by space, economics, national boundaries, cultural differences, life circumstances and/or time. Such a power—to speak and be heard by others—is often exactly what is missing for people living in poverty, with little or no access to the technologies or networks necessary to circulate stories beyond their local communities. But bound up in that power is also a terrible responsibility and danger: how does the documentarian avoid becoming the story (or determining the story) instead of acting as the vehicle to share the story? How does she avoid becoming a self-appointed spokesperson for the poor or marginalized? Or how does he not leverage the story of others’ suffering for one’s own gain or acknowledgment? These questions become even thornier when intersected with issues of race, cultural capital, and national identity. One 9 might ask all of these questions to our next author, Tamera Marko, a U.S. native, white academic who collects video stories of displaced poor residents of Medellin, Colombia. How does she do this ethically, in a way that performs a desired service within the communities that she works, without speaking for them or defining their needs? Her article, which follows, is a testament to that commitment. Marko’s life’s work (to call it scholarship seems too small a word) resides within a complex politics of representation, and she directly takes on issues that others might shy away from.

  • “Charlie Chaplin” Figures of the Maya Lowlands
RITUAL USE OF THE HUMAN FORM: A CONTEXTUAL ANALYSIS OF THE “CHARLIE CHAPLIN” FIGURES OF THE MAYA LOWLANDS by LISA M. LOMITOLA B.A. University of Central Florida, 2008 A thesis in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Master of Arts in the Department of Anthropology in the College of Sciences at the University of Central Florida Orlando, Florida Summer Term 2012 ©2012 Lisa M. Lomitola ii ABSTRACT Small anthropomorphic figures, most often referred to as “Charlie Chaplins,” appear in ritual deposits throughout the ancient Maya sites of Belize during the late Preclassic and Early Classic Periods and later, throughout the Petén region of Guatemala. Often these figures appear within similar cache assemblages and are carved from “exotic” materials such as shell or jade. This thesis examines the contexts in which these figures appear and considers the wider implications for commonly held ritual practices throughout the Maya lowlands during the Classic Period and the similarities between “Charlie Chaplin” figures and anthropomorphic figures found in ritual contexts outside of the Maya area. iii Dedicated to Corbin and Maya Lomitola iv ACKNOWLEDGMENTS I would like to thank Drs. Arlen and Diane Chase for the many opportunities they have given me both in the field and within the University of Central Florida. Their encouragement and guidance made this research possible. My experiences at the site of Caracol, Belize have instilled a love for archaeology in me that will last a lifetime. Thank you Dr. Barber for the advice and continual positivity; your passion and joy of archaeology inspires me. In addition, James Crandall and Jorge Garcia, thank you for your feedback, patience, and support; your friendship and experience are invaluable.

The ritual act of portioning and layering created spatial order and was used to organize everything from the heavens to the layout of altars.

11 ARCHAEOLOGICAL SALVAGE AND RESTORATION AT COROZAL TORRE AND NARANJITO, PETÉN Varinia Matute Raúl Noriega Keywords: Maya archaeology, Guatemala, Petén, Corozal Torre, Naranjito, Quemada Corozal, restoration, looting Guatemala is a land rich in archaeological relics, spread throughout the entire national territory. In certain areas concentrations are larger, and range from small residential settlements and modest ceremonial groups, to massive cities such as Tikal, Naranjo, Mirador, Río Azul and many others. Petén could be placed among the regions with the largest concentration of archaeological sites, most of which have not been documented so far, while the presence of abundant additional examples lost in the dense forest or within plots and rural establishments throughout the territory, still remain to be discovered (Figures 1 and 2). Figure 1. Location of the area of study on a general map. 1 The Instituto de Antropología e Historia, through the “Archaeological Sites from Northeastern Petén Protection Program” is currently conducting works at three monumental sites –Yaxha, Nakum and Naranjo-; in addition, the organization of the Project includes other components, such as an Intersite Program and a Salvage Program. Here, we shall refer only to the results achieved to this day by the Salvage Program. The primary purpose of this effort is to create a regional coverage of the built patrimony, by documenting sites and buildings, and by assessing the different degrees of deterioration to further come forth with an intervention proposal, be it for the completion of preventive conservation works, or else for accomplishing permanent interventions that will help stabilizing the buildings. To this day, the Salvage Program has recorded over 100 archaeological sites, with schematic maps that record looting trenches and damages suffered by the visible architecture and a modest photographic record (Figure 2).
