As the capital of the Confederacy, Richmond stood for four years as the heart and heartbeat of the Confederate nation and thus as a conspicuous model for southern society. Throughout those four years, Richmond found itself continuously barraged by an influx of soldiers, refugees, prostitutes, scam artists, impoverished soldiers’ wives, and both free and enslaved African-Americans who sought shelter, employment, self-betterment, and mere survival. However, with this influx came a rise in vice, crime, and dangerous social unrest. Through forceful projections of their unique class and gender identity, and through both direct and symbolic negotiations with their subordinates and peers for power during house visits, exclusive parlor parties, promenades, theater-going, presidential receptions, “starvation parties,” and holiday celebrations, Richmond’s “capital elite” (the wives and daughters of politicians, generals, and wealthy civic leaders) sought to reaffirm their threatened cultural authority and stabilize the city’s precarious social order during four years of civil war and unprecedented social unrest. Such rituals provide a fascinating lens into the evolving worldviews, social perceptions, and self-consciousness of the leading ladies of the Confederate capital. In several instances, some of those perceptions of self and social responsibility resulted in charitable aid and patriotic acts that contributed to the physical and emotional health of the Confederacy in valuable ways. Such was especially true during the early part of the war, when the ladies maintained a strong presence in both public and private social settings. However, in other instances, certain worldviews created mental blind spots that prevented the ladies from fully understanding the needs and frustrations of their subordinates. Those blind spots frequently resulted in behavior that ultimately alienated many of the ladies from the very individuals whose deference they so desperately sought to gain. Such alienation, combined with the numerous and mounting stresses that the war continued to place on the civilian population, sewed additional seeds of social unrest and disaffection for the ruling class amongst the public masses. Thus, over the course of the war, the ladies turned increasingly inward and began to place a greater emphasis on more intimate and exclusive social rituals. However, despite such reverses, the leading ladies continued to cling to their rituals with a remarkable perseverance and tenacity of purpose until the very end of the war (and some, even beyond that time), revealing the cherished, influential, and foundation role that such rituals played in the minds, lives, and identities of the female capital elite. Generally speaking, this valuable portal into these women’s minds reveals how individuals have relied on unofficial and often informal social interactions as rituals through which they have sought both to reaffirm their own contested power and to affect broader social change upon society as a whole. Specifically, it brings us ever closer to understanding the complexities of gender roles in the Civil War South, the evolving mental frameworks that governed the lives and actions of this influential group of female actors, the changing power dynamics that shaped social relationships and the functioning of the Confederate capital, and the leading ladies’ responses to both the civil and civic wars that engulfed society and transformed their lives from 1861-1865. I still remember the exact moment when I began to fall in love with this topic, while standing in the bedroom of Varina Davis during a tour of the White House of the Confederacy, in Richmond, Virginia on a class trip to the former Confederate capital. Utterly fascinated by Varina’s complexities and contradictions as a leading lady of Richmond, I knew immediately that I had to pursue a study of the “inner world” of Varina Davis, and I excitedly set out to discern the exact nature of society’s expectations of her as the Confederacy’s First Lady. This intrigue ultimately led to a senior honor’s thesis on the topic, directed by Professor Whittenburg. As is true for many of my personal and professional pursuits thus far in the field of History, I am indebted to Dr. Whittenburg for his help and inspiration, and for leading me to the genesis of this project. I am eternally grateful for the undying support, encouragement, advice, and the friendship of both him and his wonderful wife, Dr. Carolyn Whittenburg, who have been like second parents to me ever since I first set foot on the campus of William and Mary. As I continued through graduate school at West Virginia University, my research on Varina Davis matured and expanded into the larger project that has become the focus of my dissertation. Drawing on a range of sources (including newspapers, magazines, letters and diaries, reports, school catalogs, and published and unpublished personal narratives), it explores the types and availability of adult education activities and the impact that these activities had on influencing the mind, emotions, and attitudes of the residents. The analysis reveals that for four years, Richmond, the Capital of the Confederacy, endured severe hardships and tragedies of war: overcrowdedness, disease, wounded and sick soldiers, food shortages, high inflationary rates, crime, sanitation deficiencies, and weakened socio-educational institutions. Despite these deplorable conditions, the examination reveals that educative systems of organizations, groups, and individuals offered the opportunity and means for personal development and growth. The study presents and tracks the educational activities of organizations like churches, amusement centers, colleges, evening schools, military, and voluntary groups to determine the type and theme of their activities for educational purposes, such as personal development, leisure, and recreation.

Logan of the Grand Army of the Republic, the first major Memorial Day observance is held to honor those who died “in defense of their country during the late rebellion.” Known to some as “Decoration Day,” mourners honored the Civil War dead by decorating their graves with flowers. On the first Decoration Day, General James Garfield made a speech at Arlington National Cemetery, after which 5,000 participants helped to decorate the graves of the more than 20,000 Union and Confederate soldiers buried in the cemetery. The 1868 celebration was inspired by local observances that had taken place in various locations in the three years since the end of the Civil War. In fact, several cities claim to be the birthplace of Memorial Day, including Columbus, Mississippi; Macon, Georgia; Richmond, Virginia; Boalsburg, Pennsylvania; and Carbondale, Illinois. In 1966, the federal government, under the direction of President Lyndon B. Johnson, declared Waterloo, New York, the official birthplace of Memorial Day.

Rhodes (ABSTRACT) This is a biography of Confederate Major General Jeremy Francis Gilmer. The primary emphasis of the paper is on Gilmer's career during the Civil War and his contributions to the Confederate Bureau of Engineers. Jeremy Francis Gilmer was a native of North Carolina. In 1835 he was appointed to West Point from where he gradu- ated in 1839, ranked fourth in his class. He was subse- quently appointed to the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers. When the Civil War began, Gilmer and his family were stationed in San Francisco. He resigned his U.S. Army commission when North Carolina seceded from the Union. After he returned to the South, Gilmer was assigned to Albert Sidney Johnston's command in Kentucky. At the battle of Shiloh Gilmer was wounded and subsequently reassigned to Virginia. Following a brief assignment to the Army of Northern Virginia, Gilmer was named Chief of the Confederate Bureau of Engineers. The Corps grew in numbers and influence as a direct result of Gilmer's influence. At the end of the war Gilmer settled in Savannah with his family where he became President of the Savannah Gas Light Company. He held that position for the remainder of his life.

Lathrop Shortly after daybreak of a morning star near the end of June 1865, Horace Greeley came to the house of George Shea (then Corporation Attorney, and afterwards Chief- Justice of the Marine Court), in New York. His errand was urgent. The preceding day he had received a letter, dated June 22, from Mrs. Varina Davis, whose husband, Jefferson Davis, was a prisoner at Fort Monroe. The “Bureau of Military Justice”, headed by General Joseph Holt, had already charged him with guilty knowledge concerning the assassination of Lincoln. Mrs. Davis wrote from Savannah, and implored Greeley to obtain, if possible, a speedy public trial of Davis on this charge, and on any inferred charge of cruelty to prisoners of war. Greeley could not believe that Davis had anything to do with the assassination. He added that Davis had personally received from Francis P. Blair, in the preceding winter, sufficient assurance of Lincoln’s kindly intentions toward the South. He then asked Mr. Shea to interest himself professionally on Davis’s behalf and said : “We can have with us those with whom you have been in confidential relations during the last two years”. Shea said that unless the Government were willing to abandon the charge against Wirz for cruelty to prisoners, it could not overlook his superior, Davis, popularly supposed to be responsible. He should hesitate to act as counsel, if the case came before a military tribunal. Greeley said he did not know Mr. Davis, and Shea said : “Neither do I. But I know those who are intimate with him ; and his reputation among them is universal for kindness of heart amounting, in a ruler, almost to weakness.” Greeley feared that the head of the Confederacy could not be held blameless, and that Wirz’s impending trial had a “malign aspect” for Davis.

With that Big Picture now in focus, it is also clear that the Details Make All the Difference. The details are what connect us across generations to those that walked these streets before us. It is the details that connect us to the lives and struggles – both large and small – of those people in these places. For two centuries, an upturned torch at Monumental Church has reflected the lives extinguished too soon by the Richmond Theatre Fire. For more than a century, an eagle on the General Assembly Building’s 1912 façade stood sentinel watching over our Capitol. Several blocks away, another eagle, radiator grill in its grasp (and tongue in cheek), signaled the advent of the automobile. Exceptional craftsmanship has stood the test of time in Virginia Union University’s “nine noble” buildings of Virginia granite. This attention to detail said “We are strong. We are solid. And we will strive and succeed for centuries to come.” It is seemingly insignificant details such as these that help us to understand that our lives are significant – that our actions can - and do - make an impact on the world around us. We are excited to have rolled up our sleeves to focus on those details. Secretary Hicks-Thomas then led a discussion regarding an e-mail sent to the Executive Board from Commission Member Mary Abelsmith. Regarding the concerns of the e-mail, the Executive Board resolved that they had already received a concrete timeline on the project as submitted by the artist, that the current funds raised are being held by the Capitol Foundation and that Alice Lynch will talk more about current fundraising efforts at the next meeting of the Full Commission. Members of the Executive Board then held a brief discussion about potential names for the Monument that had not previously been submitted. Susan Schaar brought up the potential to have a female athlete as a figure on the Monument. Ms. Schaar also discussed the major role women have played in the conservation of Virginia and suggested the name Elisabeth Scott Bocock. Em Bowles Alsop also suggested the Gibson girl and Mary Wells Ashworth. Alice Lynch questioned if Lottie Moon should be reconsidered. A suggestion from the audience of Pat Perkinson, the first female Secretary of the Commonwealth of Virginia, was made. An audience member also suggested Henrietta Lacks. The Board then discussed the information provided to them by Dr. Treadway on the list of names they had previously chosen.
