What Gary and Carissa have discovered is both fulfilling careers and a relaxed lifestyle; the “perfect place” to raise their two children. “We’ve always loved the area, my wife’s parents retired in Johnsonville and we’ve been holidaying down this way ever since my wife was young,” Gary said. “We loved the laid- back lifestyle here, and we thought we should do it whilst the children were still in primary school.” Gary was lucky to “stumble across” the Assistant Manager role at Ritchies IGA Bairnsdale (located in Eastwood) and Carissa is thrilled to be employed as a legal secretary at Warren, Graham and Murphy. Gary said that he is relishing the challenges and is proud to be a part of a community-oriented organisation. “It’s a fantastic company to work for, we’ve built up a really strong foundation and a great team, everything’s going really well,” he said.“We also have a great community benefits program.” When not at work, Gary said the family often goes down to the beach, enjoy family barbecues and cart the children to different sports. Twelve-year-old Brittney swims four days a week as a member of the East Gippsland Water Dragons Swim Club, while Jordan (9), plays football, table tennis and basketball, as well as swimming. Gary has recently taken on the role as Assistant Coach of the local under 10 football team. They are all enjoying living in Eastwood and being a part of such a close knit community. “It’s been fantastic, it’s such a wonderful lifestyle,” Gary quipped.

Our cultural heritage East Gippsland’s history is rich with the culture and heritage of its traditional inhabitants, the GunaiKurnai people, and Swan Reach was the central corroboree point for the five clans of the GunaiKurnai. The Bataluk Cultural Trail provides a wonderful insight into this history, telling a story about the traditional inhabitants, where they came from and what they encountered. It explains significant Indigenous heritage sites and provides information about Indigenous culture. The Krowathunkooloong (Keeping Place) Cultural Museum in Bairnsdale offers an in-depth look at the Indigenous history of the GunaiKurnai people from pre-European settlement through to today. Their stories unfold through imaginative displays of traditional items such as shields with traditional markings, boomerangs, bark canoes and baskets. There is also an exhibition of contemporary Koori art at the Brabuwooloong Gallery, Forge Theatre.
