Name: James Clinton Years: August 9, 1736- December 22, 1812 Residence: Little Britain, NY; Ulster County; New Windsor Brief Biography: James Clinton was the son of the farmer and army officer Charles Clinton and his wife Elizabeth Denniston, and the younger brother of NY Govenor and Vice-President George Clinton. He enlisted in the Ulster County militia company in 1756; at the time of his retirement in 1763 he was the commander of four frontier guards. In 1765 he married Mary De Witt and they had seven children (one of them NY Governor Dewitt Clinton). In 1774, he returned to the militia, fought in the assault on Quebec, and rose in the ranks becoming brigadier general in 1776. When the Revolutionary War began he was given the responsibility of fortifying the Hudson River. However by 1779, he and Major General John Sullivan took on new duties including campaigns to drive the Indians out of New York, although these campaigns were unsuccessful Clinton continued his attempts until 1783 when he left the military. From 1788 to 1801, Clinton served on the New York State Assembly, as a state senator, and represented New York at the constitutional convention. He also remarried in 1797, after the death of his first wife, to Mary Little Grey, which whom he had six more children. Clinton died in Little Britain, NY on December 22, 1812. Major Achievements: In 1776, Clinton was responsibly for the construction of the forts along the Hudson River, which were there to defend the Highlands. After his retirement from the military he was awarded brevet Major General in 1783. Agriculturally, politically, and militarily James Clinton is an essential historic figure in the shaping of New York History. For More Information: Charles B. Forward 4 1979 marked the 200th anniversary of the Sullivan-Clinton expedition against those Iroquois nations that allied themselves with Britain and the Loyalists during the American Revolution. It is a little-understood (more often misunderstood) military incursion with diplomatic, economic, and decided geo-political consequences. Unfortunately, most people, including most municipal historians, know little about the expedition beyond what is recorded on roadside markers. In 1929, during the sesquicentennial celebrations of the American Revolution, the states of New York and Pennsylvania established a special commission that produced a booklet, sponsored local pageants, and erected many commemorative tablets in both states.

Pension Application for James Dubois R. 3099 (Jane) State of New York Orange County SS. On this 21st day of September in the year of our Lord one thousand eight hundred and thirty seven personally appeared before the subscriber, a Judge of the Court of Common Pleas in and for the County of Orange it being a Court of Record, Jane Dubois aged eighty six years, who being first duly sworn according to law, doth on her oath make the following Declaration in order to obtain the benefit of the provision made by the act of Congress passed July 4th 1836. That she is the widow of James Dubois deceased, who was Lieutenant in a company which belonged to a regiment commanded by Colonel John Nicholson, deponent cannot now recollect the names of the other officers of the said company. The said James Dubois volunteered to serve two terms in the Revolutionary War as follows viz. In the year one thousand seven hundred seventy five, he enlisted in a company of volunteers commanded by Captain John Nicholson (1) of the Regiment commanded by Colonel James Clinton, all of the County of Orange aforesaid and served therein as sergeant to the end of said term. Said regiment left Orange County for the Northern frontier, either in the spring or early part of the summer of the year last aforesaid, and were in Canada when their term of service expired after the termination of the said term of five months, the said James Clinton Colonel (2) as aforesaid was promoted to be Brigadier General, and the said John Nicholson was appointed Colonel of the said Regiment, in place of the said Clinton as deponent was at that time informed and believes to be true.

On this 28 day of April 1818, before me the subscriber, one of the Judges of the Court of Common Pleas for the said County personally appeared Simon Nicolle aged sixty four years, resident in Sullivan in the said district, who being by me first duly sworn, according to law, doth, on his oath, make the following declaration, in order to obtain the provision made by the late act of Congress, entitled “An act to provide for certain persons engaged in the land and naval service of the United Sates in the revolutionary war”: That he, the said Simon Nicolle enlisted in Ulster County in the state of New York in the company commanded by Captain Hasbrouck (1) of the New York line in Col. James Clinton’s Regiment as a private in the summer of the year 1775; that he continued to serve in the said corps, (2) or in the service of the United States until the fifth day of February 1779, (3) when he was discharged from service in Montgomery County state of New York, that he was in the battles of taking St. John’s and at the defeat of General Montgomery (4) & at the Battle of Monmouth (5) and that he is in reduced circumstances, and stands in need of the assistance of his country for support; and that he has no other evidence (60) now in his power of his said services. Chapter Seven – The Military Tract (Compiled by Walter Gable, Seneca County Historian) It is very difficult to talk about parcels of property in Seneca County without coming across a reference to some Military Lot number. That is because most of the county was originally the western-most portion of the New York Military Tract. This article provides detailed information about the nature of the Military Tract in general and specifically those in what is today Seneca County. The Nature of the Military Tract in General On September 16, 1776, the recently organized Congress of the United States met and considered the report of the Board of War. The Revolutionary War was now a definite part of the life of the new nation and more men were needed if the war was to be won. Each state was asked to furnish its quota of men according to its population. Delaware and Georgia, with the least, were to provide one battalion each, New Jersey and New York, four, and Massachusetts (which then included what is now Maine) and Virginia, having the most people, were to furnish enough men for 15 battalions. Congress realized that men would not be willing to leave their homes and bear the hardship of war unless they and their families benefited by such an effort on their part. Granted they would be willing to serve in the militia for short tours, guarding the frontiers of their neighboring countryside, but they were being asked to sign up for the duration of the war or until they might be discharged by Congress.

The encampment spanned between twenty and thirty acres and included over 4,000 men and their equipment. 3. “Old Chemung” • Continue down Water Street for 0.2 miles and merge onto the Route 17/I-86 East entrance ramp on the right. • After traveling 5.2 miles on Rt.17/ I-86 East, you can see the “hogback” ridge on your right, just west of the Lowman exit. • You will remain on Rt. 17/I-86 East for 10.5 miles and will get off at Exit 59, to Chemung.

Johnson, Colonel, U.S. Army, 1995 Abstract of “MAKING THE BEST USE OF YOUR JOINT FORCES”: JOINT AND COMBINED OPERATIONS ON THE HUDSON RIVER, 1777 AND 1781 British, French, and American commanders in the American Revolution understood the concepts of allied, joint, and amphibious operations. These operations fit within a defensive strategy that General George Washington and Lieutenant General Sir Henry Clinton practiced for most of the war: a war of posts with New York City and the “line of the Hudson” as the “seat of the war.” Through their experiences in the wars of the mid- eighteeth century the British developed sophisticated doctrine and practices for joint, amphibious operations. Because of this joint doctrine, Clinton and Commodore William Hotham were able to conduct a series of classic, amphibious landings to capture the fortifications of the Hudson Highlands in October 1777 and even burn the New York capital at Kingston. After a disastrous joint campaign in 1777, with French support and guidance, Washington and Lieutenant General Rochambeau threatened New York City with a joint expedition in the summer of 1781.
