Islamic Gardens Amy Rebecca Gansell This course explores gardens of the Islamic World, covering a breadth of historical, cultural, geographic, and environmental contexts. After being introduced to the Islamic world, the nature of specifically “Islamic” gardens is considered. While formal design and aesthetic experience is emphasized throughout, religious, social, and political implication of landscape design are studied through historic cases. Evidence for past gardens, archaeology, and garden conservation are addressed as well. In Malaysia, Muslim religious education has developed in two forms, traditional and modern systems. Ulama play a vital role to produce human capital for the nation. Close collaboration between ulama and the ruler (sultan / king) produced an outstanding achievement in making sure traditional religious education is able to be transformed into integrated modern system. This is especially evident in Madrasah Idrisiah since its establishment in the year 1917 with the support by then the ruler, Sultan of Perak. Cybergeo : European Journal of Geography, No.196, 16 October 2001 The Meaning of Landscape in Classical Arabo-Muslim Culture Lamia LATIRI Summary: This article explores the concept of landscape in Arabo-Muslim culture from a linguistic and literary standpoint1. Based on extracts from historical collections produced by Arab geographers of the classical period, it shows the existence of spatial landscape models and stereotypes that served to situate a place in a landscape. The landscapes are found to be defined on visual, aesthetic and sensory criteria. Key words: lexicology, landscape, Muslim culture A constant feature of human culture is a capacity to absorb extremely varied influences. At different times in history, the Christian West and Muslim East have established relations and influenced each other. The common core to both Muslim and Western science is the scientific legacy of Ancient Greece2. The series of studies and translations of Greek scientific works, begun in the Omayyad and Abbasid era at the end of the eighth century, and continued in Spain (Cordoba) in the twelfth century, proved valuable for Christian Europe between the thirteenth and fifteenth centuries3. It is therefore not surprising to see a formulation of landscape emerge at the start of the fifteenth century in the West. It was a logical process consequent on the transmission, assimilation and renewal of the philosophy and science of the Ancient world. At the end of a long and complex process, Western culture formulated its theories and interpretations of landscape, and directed them in a way that gave a central place to the visual and scene-setting aspects. -

Under the so called Perak Amanjaya Development Plan, some of the things that we have tried to do are the same things that I believe many others here are concerned about: first, balanced development and economic distribution between the urban and rural areas by focusing on developing small towns; second, poverty eradication regardless of race or religion so that no one remains on the fringes of society or is left behind economically; and, third, youth empowerment. Under the first one, the state identifies viable small- and medium-size companies which can operate from small towns. These companies are to be working closely with the state government to boost the economy of the respective areas. -

Chabbi-Chemrouk Laboratoire architecture et environnement LAE, Ecole polytechnique d’architecture et d’urbanisme, Algeria Abstract The analogy to nature in architectural conception refers to anatomy and logical structures, and helps to ease and facilitate knowledge related to buildings. Indeed, several centuries ago, since Eugène Violet-le-Duc and its relationship to the botanic, to Phillip Steadman and its biological analogy, many studies have already facilitated the understanding and apprehension of many complex systems, about buildings in the world. Besides these morphological and structural aspects, environmental preoccupations are now imposing themselves as new norms and values and reintroducing the quest for traditional and vernacular know-how as an alternative to liveable and sustainable settlements. In Algiers, the exploration of traditional buildings, and Moorish architecture, which date from the 16th century, interested many researchers who tried to elucidate their social and spatial laws of coherence. An excellent equilibrium was in effect, set up, by a subtle union between local culture and environmental adaptability. It is in continuation of André Ravéreau’s architectonics’ studies that this paper will make an analytical study of a specific landscape, that of a ‘Fahs’, a traditional palatine residence situated at the extra-mural of the medieval historical town. This ‘Fahs’ constitutes an excellent example of equilibrated composition between architecture and nature. The objective of this study being the identification of the subtle conjugation between space syntax and many elements of nature, such as air, water and green spaces/gardens. -

Author Bio Breanna Vick is a Graphic Designer based in Minneapolis, Minnesota. She is interested in developing a deeper understanding of different methods of design research. On a site visit to Morocco and Spain in May through June of 2017, Breanna tested her knowledge of design research by observing Moorish design integrated in Andalusia. By developing a research paper, establishing sketchbooks, collecting photographs, and keeping journal entries, she was able to write, design and construct this narrative book. With Breanna’s skill-set in creating in-depth research, she has a deep understanding of the topics that she studies. With this knowledge, she is able to integrate new design aesthetics into her own work. Project Objective My undergraduate research project objective is to advance my understanding of how Moorish design appears in cities located throughout the southern territory of Spain. -

The concept of urban mosque stems from more extensive reasons that mostly come from the overall issues of industrialization. Considering the challenges related to rapid urban growth, public institutions, such as mosque and its compatibility is required to be assessed in the context of compact cities. This study, therefore, aims to evaluate the planning and layout of six different styles of mosque in Malaysia regarding their suitability in compact urban settings. Due to its genre, the study adopts a case study as a qualitative research strategy as its research method. Content analysis is conducted on the compiled literature to indicate the expected outcome. Following a brief comparative discussion, this paper shows that mosque with modern architectural style among all six typologies is most suitable in the context of compact urban settings. Factors considered for the evaluation of mosques include layout progression of the mosque whether horizontal or vertical, provision for vertical stacking of spaces, symmetry in topology as well as in elevation and space types regarding flexible usage.
