urope is in the middle of a deadly second wave of the COVID-19 Epandemic. Lockdowns, curfews, “circuit-breakers”, local confinement: country after country is forced to take ever-more-severe measures to respond to the exponential growth of the pandemic, which in many countries is out of control. Yet, this second wave could have been avoided, or at least its consequences managed. The reason we are here is a combination of factors, all of which point to one overriding factor: the prioritisation of capitalist profits over the protection of life. Dragging their feet The reaction of capitalist governments in Europe to the first wave of COVID-19 was late and insufficient. First of all, we need to explain that the second wave could have been avoided – or at least its impact greatly minimised – if the necessary measures to protect public health had been taken.
