Bulletin 3.Qxd Issue: 3 22nd October 1997 Chief Editor: Henry Francis (USA) l Editors: Mark Horton (Great Britain), Brian Senior (Great Britain) l Layout Editor: Stelios Hatzidakis (Greece) USA1 Norway tie for lead in Bermuda Bowl France lead the way in the Venice Cup Bermuda Bowl USA1 had a great day with three good wins against other highly regarded teams, 16-14 against Denmark, 22-8 over China in the afternoon vugraph match and 23-7 against Brazil.The only other team with three wins was Australia, who also defeated China (17-13) and Brazil (19-11) plus host country,Tunisia (20-10), while Norway, USA2, Poland and France all managed two wins and a draw.After six matches, only the joint- leaders, USA1 and Norway are unbeaten. Biggest win of the day was by New Zealand who crushed Chile by 25-1. Chile bounced back though and achieved the second biggest win, 24-6 over South Africa. Venice Cup France are running away with the Venice Cup round robin, 19 VPs clear of the field after only six match- es. On Day 2 they had two big wins, over highly fancied China (20-10) and Colombia (22-8), followed by a draw with perennial rivals, Great Britain. Already, France are the only undefeated side in the Ladies com- petition. The only teams with three wins on the day were the two USA teams, with USA2 still playing without The World Bridge Federation flag flies Lynn Deas. USA1 defeated Brazil (23-7), Netherlands (16-14) and Canada (20-10), while USA2 won all at half-mast in honour of Edgar Kaplan three matches by 16-14, against Italy, Germany and Tunisia .Also enjoying the day were Australia and sec- ond placed South Africa, both with two wins and a draw. South Africa had the one maximum of the day, against New Zealand. Landen was playing with Pratap Rajadhyaksha; their teammates were Dan Morse-Bobby Wolff and Adam Wildavsky-Doug Doub. With one round to go, three teams were closely bunched: Landen, Malcolm Brachman (Chris Compton, Mike Passell, Claudio Nunes, Fulvio Fantoni) and Nick Nickell (Richard Freeman, Jeff Meckstroth, Eric Rodwell, Bob Hamman, Paul Soloway). Brachman split their round – 1.5 to 1.5 – while Nickell got only 1 on the round. That put Landen on top with 33.14, followed by Richard Schwartz (Michael Becker, David Berkowitz, Larry Cohen, Zia Mahmood, Michael Rosenberg) with 31.12 and Nickell with 30.65. Landen and Rajadhyaksha claimed their second North American championship as a partnership; they won Open Pairs II at the 2000 Spring NABC in Cin- cinnati. Landen won the same event at the 1990 Spring NABC in Fort Worth. Morse and Wolff won their second North Ameri- can championship at this tournament – they were mem- bers of the winning Senior Knockout Teams earlier in the week.     Congratulations to Antonio Sementa of Italy, Benédicte Cronier of France, and Miltos Karamanlis of Greece who are, respectively, the new Generali Masters champions in the WBF events for Men, Women and Juniors. It must have been highly popular with the local supporters in Athens that the winner of the first Junior event was Greek. There is a report inside but the stories of good play in the Daily Bulletin were almost non-existent. More came from a two-session Pairs event in the Poland Seniors Congress than from ten sessions of a gathering of the world’s best players. One might use the excuse of unfamiliar system or partnerships to explain the many reports of mishaps in bidding and defence, but what about declarer play? Most journalists prefer to report good play, rather than the all-too-common mistakes. If so, they will have difficulty finding stories to use when referring to the championships. * * * * * * * * * * The top players have had a busy time recently, dashing from the US Nationals or EBL Mixed in Italy to the Cap Gemini in the Netherlands, a short break, and then a run of the Generali in Athens, the Politiken in Denmark and the Niklas Data in Stockholm (report next month on the latter). They will be grateful to have some time at home. What happens in reality, of course, is that they pick and choose which is convenient to play in. For the journalists this has the advantage of a variety of fields, but it is a struggle for the organisers who seek the strongest list of names.
