The credit for this must go to Miss Jennie Lee 'j who during her tenure E of office as Minister of State , Department of Education and Science has done as much or mo re than any other Minister responsible for the Arts . What a pity it is that her obstinate and R short- sight~d policy on the Clapham Collection i s sufficient to cancel out any credit due in other spheres. Clapham ranks as the first national collection ever to be broken up by Gove r nment decree p I G and the blame is all Miss Lee's. THE GLC SHOWS ITS HAND R Dur ing 1970 the GLC will be making a grant of £2m to London Transport for expendit ure on capital projects . Mr Desmond Plummer, the Leader of the Council described the grant as being the f irst o move to raise the level of service . Bearing in mind recent reductions in service , attempts (by no means wholly successful) to close certain l ines and stations at we ekends'j and the £7m being s pent U by the Council on road development during the ye ar, it becomes very clear where LT stands in the N order of priorities - low, very low. 33 D . 34 18.20 U: LT STATIONS SCHEDULED AS HISTORIC BUILDINGS On The Ministry of Housing and Local Government has listed from Fel four stations on the Piccadilly Line as buildings of special servioe architectural and historical interest. The stations and botl concerned are Sudbury Town, Arnos Grove, Southgate and As the 1 Oakwood. On Sundays, the proposed closure of the Chesham branch listed from February 1 did not take place, but from February 8 the special service has been an hourly one instead of half-hourly, and both starts and finishes one hour earlier than previously. tlld As the branch is single-line, and operated by one train it is 134 to the a little difficult to see the justificatio~ for a 50% cut in the Sunday service and staff economy ~ill be nil. Publicity - Automatic Gates and Station Works Two Recent introductions of new Automatic Gates have concerni: ,been ~eralded by a distribution of handbills at some principal stations - all of which happen to be equipped with the four-door type of gates.
