LOCAL SINGERS INVITED FOR SPECIAL CONCERT As Department Chair of Drama and Dance at North Central Texas College and The Center for Performing Arts Event Coordinator, I would like to invite all local church choir members (and all singing enthusiasts) to participate in a local collaboration along with the Denton Community Band. We are planning a patriotic concert in honor of Veteran’s Day on Sunday, Nov. 9 at 3 p.m. We would like to meet at the Center for Performing Arts with our rehearsal pianist and all the singers on Nov. 2 at 2 p.m. to run through the music (1.5-2 hours max). Then, on the day of the concert, participants should arrive a little early (2 p.m.) so we can do a quick run-through with the band before the concert starts. The stage can hold 40-50 members along with the 40-piece band. We can also have another 40-50 participants lining the audience on the sides of the theater. I hope you will be interested in participating in this event! It should be a truly wonderful concert and a great way to involve the community. Gabrielle M. V. Fletcher (940) 668-3316 Duplicate Bridge News At our Aug. 25 competition, Allene Johnson and Chrissy Bost won it all for the second week in a row. The E/W winners were Ginger Bowling and Pat McCleese. There was no game on Labor Day. On Sept. 8 Jacque and Joyce ran away with fi rst place. Bert and Frankie were second. In the B Category, there was a tie between B. J. and Smoke with Mary Gill and Helen Cowan. The Sept. 15 winners were the Davis cousins, George and John. And, it was not close—they were 12 points ahead of second place. Meanwhile, second through fi fth were all in the 55% range: second place was 55.93 and fi fth was 55.19. It’s really tight at our club, huh? Chrissy Bost and Allene Johnson were in the 55% bunch, so they were fi rst in the B Category. Christy McKenzie Genealogy We are off to a good start and I hope that the next few meetings will see more of you able to attend. At the last meeting we talked about records of various church denominations. For the month of October we will have discussions on “How to Climb Those Brick Walls” in an effort to fi nd solutions to some of the problems you may be having in your research. The schedule for the fall meetings is Wednesday, Oct. 8, Nov. 12, and Dec. 10. Our subject for November will be announced later. However, I think we will have a combination Christmas event on Dec. 10 with the new British and Irish group that will be starting in October. Several have requested such a group and I am excited, as that area of research is one of my favorites to explore. So, on Thursday, Oct. 9 at 6 p.m. at the Lodge we will begin a session of British and Irish research. For the fi rst evening, we will look at the basics of Irish, Scotch-Irish, and Scottish research. Custom Homes @ any price range Metal Roofing FAQ - Hail to the Metal Roof Tom Black, Executive Director of the Metal Roofing Alliance answers frequently asked questions about the use of metal roofing in residential applications. Hail can break, split and cause tear-off damage to traditional roofing Always w/Customers needs in mind materials, resulting in big repair or replacement costs. Contractors and homeowners have discovered that metal roofs can protect homes from extreme weather events. “Most of the damage to a traditional roof in a hailstorm is caused by water damage to the contents of the house References Available when shingles are fractured,” said Bill Hippard, President of the Metal Roofing Alliance. “Once a roof has a crack, water can stream into the home, damaging the structure and its contents. Water damage can lead to mold and serious repair bills.” Licensed builder since 1985 Metal roofs are very tough and highly resistant to hail damage. Hail will not penetrate a metal roof. Even a new asphalt shingle roof won’t protect a home from the next hailstorm. In fact, many metal roofing products have the highest impact resistance and hail rating (Class 4) granted by Underwriters’ Laboratory (UL). This means that a sample of the product did not crack when hit twice in the same spot by a 2-inch steel ball, which, in a storm, would translate into a huge hailstone. As a result of metal roofing’s superior performance in hail prone areas, some insurance companies even provide a reduced rate for homes protected by metal roofs. 12 CommuniQue October 2008 October 2008 CommuniQue 13

ProAm Scramble Is September Event Even with Hurricane Ike threatening to disrupt the event, we were able to complete the playday without any rain delays. The format was a ProAm Scramble which is where the A player is the pro for the whole round. Everyone teed off and both the pro and the scramble team selected the longest drive. The pro then played his ball and the scramble team played a scramble. The search is on for a new golf course superintendent. We will continue to play on temporary greens until further notice. A permanent solution is being formulated to address the greens and the results will be forthcoming. In the interim, the next step is to overseed the greens with rye. This should see us through the winter and potentially provide the ladies a fair quality green for the Rally for the Cure. In the meantime we ask the golfi ng community to be patient. Izak Botha

Did You Know . . . Tournament scores do not affect your handicap unless they are exceptionally low scores. If they are exceptionally high then they are not used in the computation of your handicap. Your handicap is figured using the best 10 of your last 20 scores regardless of whether they are regular play or tournament play. The handicap system retains your two lowest tournament scores and the number of tournament scores you have within any year period and only uses them for reduction if those two low ones are exceptionally low.
