  • Shirley Hughes Was Born and Grew up in West Kirby, Near Liverpool. She
    Shirley Hughes was born and grew up in West Kirby, near Liverpool. She studied at Liverpool Art School and at the Ruskin School of Art in Oxford, before embarking on a career as a freelance illustrator. At first she worked as an interpretive illustrator, but she began to write and design her own picture books when her children were very young. Her first book, Lucy and Tom's Day, was published in 1960. Now living in London's Notting Hill, Shirley Hughes has illustrated over two hundred children's books and is renowned as a champion of children's literature. She has been the recipient of the Other Award, the Kate Greenaway Medal and the prestigious Eleanor Farjeon Award. She was shortlisted for the Astrid Lindgren Memorial Award, which rewards the best in contemporary children's and young adult literature from all over the world, in 2010. Shirley Hughes won the first ever Book Trust Lifetime Achievement Award for her outstanding contribution to children's literature. Book Trust CEO, Diana Gerald, says: ‘Book Trust is thrilled that our first ever Lifetime Achievement Award goes to someone whose remarkable, multi-talented contribution to children's fiction spans several generations and continues to this day. Her characters are imprinted on the memories of two or three generations, a recognition of their enduring charm. The CILIP Kate Greenaway Medal Shortlist for 2016 Judges’ comments are listed in italics The Kate Greenaway Medal was established in 1955, for distinguished illustration in a book for children. It is named after the popular nineteenth century artist known for her fine children's illustrations and designs. The CILIP Kate Greenaway Medal is awarded annually for an outstanding book in terms of illustration for children and young people. Awarded annually, the Medal is the only prize in the UK to solely reward outstanding illustration in a children's book. The winner receives a golden medal and £500 worth of books to donate to a library of their choice. Since 2000, the winner of the Kate Greenaway Medal has also been awarded the £5000 Colin Mears Award. Colin Mears, a Worthing-based accountant and children's book collector, left a bequest providing every Greenaway winner with a cash award as well as the coveted Medal. There are nearly big pages of stories, prose and rhymes for children. Her style is naturalistic, she uses watercolours a lot. I love her incredibly expressive faces and there is much vivid and humorous detail for children to look at. The pictures dominate the writing, particularly in the sections for younger children, with lots of full page and double spread illustrations and the writing seemingly added around them rather than the other way around. Alfie stories dominate the early part of this section, which is the part I have spent most time reading with my daughter. According to my daughter this little The Shirley Hughes Collection is called Rebecca and she is very popular in our house. My only — The Shirley Hughes Collection minor — criticism is that occasionally some of the stories can be a bit wordy. The stories all have engaging themes for young children. They can be quite long stories about simple pleasures such as a trip to the seaside or a birthday party, things that may seem humdrum to us jaded adults but are wondrous new experiences to a young child.

While ‘best’ as a concept can undoubtedly be contested, the winning titles nev- ertheless provide an understanding of how gender has been portrayed throughout the twentieth century and into the new millennium. Focusing on the titles in more detail, a key consideration has to be the extent to which they adhere to the domi- nant gender expectations of the time they were published. Do they reflect majority adult beliefs about what children should aspire to or do they potentially contest the status quo? In fact, there are examples of both: books that support the domi- nant gender ideologies of time they were published and books which question and challenge, offering the reader diverse portrayals of being male and female.
