3 INDICE INTRODUCCIÓN CAPÍTULO I. • Slave Trading and Slavery in the Dutch Colonial Empire: a Global Comparison
rik Van WELie Slave Trading and Slavery in the Dutch Colonial Empire: A Global Comparison INTRODUCTION From the early seventeenth to the mid-nineteenth century, slavery played a fundamental role in the Dutch colonial empire.1 All overseas possessions of the Dutch depended in varying degrees on the labor of slaves who were imported from diverse and often remote areas. Over the past decades numer- ous academic publications have shed light on the history of the Dutch Atlantic slave trade and of slavery in the Dutch Americas.2 These scholarly contribu- tions, in combination with the social and political activism of the descen- dants of Caribbean slaves, have helped to bring the subject of slavery into the national public debate. The ongoing discussions about an official apology for the Dutch role in slavery, the erection of monuments to commemorate that history, and the inclusion of some of these topics in the first national history canon are all testimony to this increased attention for a troubled past.3 To some this recent focus on the negative aspects of Dutch colonial history has already gone too far, as they summon the country’s glorious past to instill a 1. Recently, it is contributing in no small measure to providing places for teeming Nigerian youths who for one reason or the other could not get admission into the conventional universities. These course materials have been written by writers specially trained in ODL course delivery. The writers have made great efforts to provide up to date information, knowledge and skills in the different disciplines and ensure that the materials are user-friendly. In addition to provision of course materials in print and e-format, a lot of Information Technology input has also gone into the deployment of course materials.

Few scholars have, however, examined the functions of isles in the building of Dutch maritime connections. This paper partially fills this void in the literature by looking at the African Islands of Arguin, Gorée, Cape Verde and São Tomé, and highlighting their significance within the seventeenth- century Dutch Atlantic. Using information from the notarial archives of Amsterdam, the collection of the Dutch West India Company (WIC) and journals of voyages, we examine the role played by these islands in the formation and operationalization of Dutch commercial circuits in the Atlantic, and emphasize their geo-strategic importance for the achievement of the colonial aspirations and military ambitions of the Dutch Republic and the WIC. Keywords Africa, Cape Verde, commerce, defence, islands, navigation, São Tomé Introduction The role of islands in the European maritime expansion into the Atlantic, Indian and Pacific Oceans has been widely recognized by scholars, particularly specialists dedicated Corresponding author: Filipa Ribeiro da Silva, Department of History, University of Macau, SAR China.

Since the early works of Osório, at the turn of the century, only few attempts were made to update and complete existing knowledge on fish systematics and biodiversity from this area. Over the past few years, however, several surveys made it possible to start an inventory of the coastal fishes for the archipelago. These are mainly based on specimens that where captured or observed whilst diving and also on fishes landed on beaches by local artisanal fishermen.
