Shit Robot What Follows
Shit Robot What Follows Marcus Lambkin aka Shit Robot returns with his third full length album for DFA Records, entitled What Follows. The album follows Lambkin’s previous long-players, From The Cradle To The Rave (2010) and We Got A Love (2014), which drew plaudits from the likes of The Guardian and Pitchfork, and featured Reggie Watts and James Murphy among the array of contributors. The album was recorded at Marcus’ home studio in Stuttgart and various New York studios, then mixed over the course of 11 intense & coffee-fuelled days in DFA label mate Juan Maclean’s New Hampshire studio. Citing ‘drum machines’ as a key influence, Lambkin has taken the Shit Robot sound into new areas on this record, with most of the tracks the results of improvisation with Catalog Number: DFA2484 various analog machines both new and old. together his second album, over which hovers the ghost of Paul McCartney. Like much of Macca’s work, it is heavy on cute melodies and safe arrangements. The gentle jazz-lite opener ‘All About Me’ has sweet pop harmonies and a gentle East Coast ‘60s swagger. ‘The Note’, ‘Til We Die’ and the attractively-flawed ‘Fool’s Gold’ all evoke McCartney at his prettiest, with ‘Father And Son’ owing a debt of gratitude towards the great man’s ‘Put It There’. ‘I’ve Got a Feeling’ (not the Beatles song) is, ironically, more reminiscent of James Taylor, moving up a gear to explore a country- rock vein, and the instrumental title-track has an appealingly hypnotic Spanish flavour. King’s raw voice on ‘Chasing Stars’, ‘No Remorse (I Feel Every Word)’ and the waltzing ballad ‘Upstream’ make you wish he’d showcase his vocals more often. With My Sweet Elixir he has veered clear of indie-rock to create an album that takes few musical risks and plays well within the guidelines. At times it makes for delightful undiluted pop, while at others it’s drizzled with too much saccharine. JACKIE HAYDEN KEY TRACK: ‘ALL ABOUT ME’ KLAXONS RAY LAMONTAGNE AND SURFING THE VOID THE PARIAH DOGS POLYDOR GOD WILLIN’ & THE CREEK DON’T RISE [RCA] SOLID IF UNSPECTACULAR OUTING FOR COUNTRY STAR SPACE CADETS JOURNEY TO THE OUTER LIMITS ON and album centerpiece ‘Venusia’, that Klaxons truly Ray LaMontagne is a country PSYCHEDELIA-TINGED SECOND ALBUM bewitch. A-Sides a Cosmology of Audio Editions by Artists Around the Arc Lémanique Region
Year End Booklet 2006
philippa’s intro bit... It’s been a fantastic year here at Piccadilly Records, what with one thing or another, so here’s a look at the 2006 highlights: Obviously winning the Music Week award for best independent record store was a major coup, and a real reward for all the hard work everyone here puts into making the shop and website good places to buy music. Hopefully we manage to pass on our enthusiasm for the records and CDs we sell, without any of the elitism or snobbery often found in indie shops. On the back of the Music Week award we also ended up being one of the best record shops in the country (The Guardian) and best shops (not just record shops!) in the world (The Observer), while Tim and I were invited onto the airwaves GMR and Radio 4 respectively. The shop’s usual summer heat-wave coincided in part with the World Cup meaning we actually got to take a bit of time off to watch the England matches (oh, lucky us!). Looking back at my intro from our Summer booklet shows how wildly optimistic I was: I mean, England to get knocked out of the World Cup in the semis by Brazil - like that was going to happen! Hopefully we’ll do better in The Ashes (only a few days away as I write this!). On the staffing front Mark Ward added us to the long list of Manchester record shops he’s worked for then decided to head out to the sunnier climes of Australia to work for his dad instead, so good luck to him. -

FY2014 Annual Listing
2013 2014 Annual Listing 2013 1 2014 Letter from the Director The past year was a busy and exciting one for The Museum of Modern Art, with a wide range of acquisitions, exhibitions, programs, publications, and digital initiatives bringing MoMA’s renowned collection and research to audiences worldwide. MoMA welcomed over three million visitors to the galleries, and we extended our hours to seven days a week. As our audiences become more global, mobile, and wired, we have been increasing virtual access to our collection and programs to create a MoMA community that is truly international, with 27 million people visiting MoMA. org and MoMAstore.org, and millions more connecting with MoMA via our apps and social media channels. This was a strong year for the collection, with the acquisition of approximately 1,100 works of art in all mediums. Large-scale sculptures by Isa Genzken (Rose II) and Thomas Schütte (United Enemies I) now grace our Sculpture Garden, with key works by Paul Gauguin, Steve McQueen, Mark Manders, Robert Rauschenberg, Gerhard Richter, Richard Serra, Kiki Smith, and Sarah Sze, as well as our first app and six pioneering video games, also entering the collection. We were very fortunate to receive some 200,000 images from the Harry Shunk and Shunk-Kender Photography Collection, donated by the Roy Lichtenstein Foundation to a five-museum consortium that includes MoMA. Over the past 12 months MoMA presented more than 40 exhibitions, including five of the Top Ten Most Popular Exhibitions in New York for 2013 (The Art Newspaper)— more than any other institution. -
