Texas Revolution    1821 - breaks away from Spain and becomes  - , 1836 – Battle of the Alamo. an independent country. All Texans defending the Alamo were killed,  1822 – (Stephen Austin) Texas colony was started. including , and Jim Bowie. The people living in Texas were under Mexican ordered the execution of those who surrendered. rule/government. Texans were outraged!   1830 – Mexican government banned Americans from , 1836 – Texas declares independence from settling in Texas (Slavery) Mexico.   1835 – tried to remove a cannon from , 1836 – , Texans a town in Texas, but rebels fought the Mexican’s. captured Santa Anna and forced him to sign a treaty This was the Beginning of the Texas revolution giving Texas independence.

Mexican Cession     Mexican army fights battles with U.S. in Mexico City Gold discovered at Sutter’s Fort, California and San Jacinto.  49ers: 1849 huge numbers of people began migrating to  Santa Anna surrenders California to search for gold. California (Mexican Cession)  Success stories brought many people to California  Gadsden Purchase: U.S. pays Mexico 10 million  Many cultures mixed in the mining camps dollars for present day Arizona

Gold Rush: Who was successful?   Merchants and Businessmen: Supplies and food were sold for inflated prices.  Few gold miners were successful, most lost money on supplies (not enough gold to go around to make up the difference)  Long Term Effects: Population boom, California becomes a state, leftover merchants and gold miners start new industry and the California economy grows!
