Revista Acadêmica Da Escola Naval Revista De VillegagnonRevista de ISSN 1981-3589 Revista Acadêmica da Escola Naval Ano IX Número 9 - 2014 Revista de Villegagnon 2014 Caro Leitor, Pelo nono ano consecutivo, estamos de volta para apresentar mais um número da nossa Revista, fruto da dedicação e do entusiasmo do Corpo Docente e Discente da Escola Naval. O prestígio alcançado dentro e fora da Marinha proporcionou, nesta edição, o dobro da tiragem alcançada na primeira. Além disso, para que todos tenham acesso à Revista de Villegagnon, as versões on-line de todas as edições encontram-se no site oficial do Comando da Marinha (www.marinha.mil.br) e no site da Escola Naval (www.en.mar.mil.br). Contamos, também, com o apoio do Clube Naval, do Centro de Comu- nicação Social da Marinha (CCSM) e da Secretaria Escolar da Escola Naval, para enviar a Revista em meio digital à maioria das Turmas for- madas na Ilha de Villegagnon. Ressalta-se que, por meio do Departamento do Patrimônio Histórico e Documentação da Marinha (DPHDM) e da biblioteca da Escola Naval, cadastramos a Revista na Rede de Bibliotecas Integradas da Marinha (Rede BIM), que passou a estar disponível para consultas junto aos acervos dos demais Comandos Militares, consolidando a nossa Revista à Rede de Bibliotecas Integradas do Ministério da Defesa (REBIMD). Atualmente, esta Rede reúne 87 bibliotecas, sendo 46 da Marinha, 28 do Exército, 12 da Aeronáutica e uma do Ministério da Defesa, cuja divulgação é realizada pela Indexação Compartilhada de Artigos Periódicos (ICAP). A ICAP consiste em um serviço cujo objetivo é facilitar o acesso aos artigos de periódicos editados pelas instituições cooperantes, por meio de uma indexação compartilhada. Os artigos da Revista de Villegagnon, desde a 1a edição, estarão à disposição on-line, para as instituições de pesquisa e ensino superior que fazem parte da Rede Pergamum. Em outubro deste ano, a ICAP já reunia periódicos de 37 instituições. Neste ano, iniciou-se uma importante disciplina na formação acadêmica dos nossos futuros Oficiais, a Metodologia de Pesquisa, que, ao final, contempla a elaboração de um trabalho monográfico de autoria dos Aspirantes do último ano. Os ensaios que forem recomendados pelos docentes-orientadores comporão um banco de artigos, à disposição do Conselho Editorial da Revista de Villegagnon, para publicação em suas próximas edições. Nesta edição, teremos pela primeira vez a revista em inglês, que será divulgada pelo Navio-Escola “Brasil” e pelo Navio-Veleiro “Cisne Branco”, quando em viagens de representação, e pelo serviço de relações públicas do Gabinete do Comando da Escola Naval, por ocasião das visitas de marinhas amigas. Esperamos, novamente, contar com a sua aprovação e o seu estímulo ao nosso esforço, que visa sempre ao crescente aprimoramento da forma e do conteúdo da Revista. Assim, agradeço aos nossos fiéis patrocinadores, pelo carinho, atenção e apoio, bem como a todos os que contribuíram para o sucesso de mais uma edição. Desejo a todos uma Boa Leitura. I have just heard the story of Henry Tandey, which I guess many of you will know. Tandey was the most decorated solider of WW1, winning the Military Medal and the Victoria Cross for extreme bravery. The story goes that, towards the end of the war in 1918, Tandey spared some wounded German soldiers in Menin, France. In 1938, when Chamberlain went to Germany to sign the Munich agreement, Hitler pointed to a painting on his wall showing the Menin scene and identified Tandey, a subject of the painting, as the man who had spared his life. Although this story hit the British newspapers, Tandey was never vilified for potentially changing the history of the world (Hitler was unknown in 1918 anyway).

    JOHN RULE THE SMACKSMEN OF THE NORTH SEA LABOUR RECRUITMENT AND EXPLOITATION IN BRITISH DEEP-SEA FISHING, 1850-90 The modern history of British deep-sea fishing begins with the railway expansion of the mid-nineteenth century. Rapid transport and the increasing use of ice as a preservative made it possible for fresh sea fish to enter the diets of the inhabitants of inland towns. Fresh sea fish was regarded as almost a luxury food before the railway age, yet by the third quarter of the nineteenth century, it had become a major protein source for the working classes of the industrial towns, and the fried-fish shop had become a working-class institution. The sea-fishing industry underwent a vast market-induced expansion. The census of 1841 enumerated only 24,000 males as being employed in fishing. By 1881 there were 58,000. If the inland consumer ever gave thought to the fishermen who supplied his table, he probably conjured up a picture of a weather-beaten village fisherman going daily to the fishing grounds to return in the evening to his waiting wife and children, bringing the silver harvest of the sea. While he had been at sea his family had busied themselves baiting lines, making and mending nets, and, in the case of the fish wives, performing their traditional function of selling the catch. Such a picture may have been broadly true of the fishing villages of Scotland, Cornwall, Northumberland or the South coast, but a feature of the second half of the nineteenth century was the creation of a new kind of fisherman who crewed the sailing trawlers of the North Sea.

Deze lesmap bestaat uit twee delen: - een verklarende woordenlijst aan de hand hiervan kan u de leerlingen voorbereiden op de voorstelling die ze zullen zien. Dit deel is bedoeld om behandeld te worden voor u de voorstelling ziet. - deze voorstelling stelt een ethische vraag centraal. Het hoofdpersonage Henry Tandey maakt een keuze die verstrekkende gevolgen heeft. U kan met de leerlingen een gesprek aangaan betreffende het maken van keuzes en de waarden en normen die een keuze kunnen bepalen. Aangezien wij niet te veel willen verklappen, duiden we die keuze in deze lesmap niet. We bieden enkel een algemeen (en een dus wat vaag) kader. Dit deel is bedoeld om behandeld te worden na het zien van de voorstelling. (Mocht u het verhaal van Henry Tandey kennen, vragen wij u niet alles te vertellen aan uw leerlingen om de voorstelling voor hen verrassend te houden.)     THE GOAL AND THE GOLD MINE: Constraints Management and the Dutch Herring Fishing Industry, 1400-1 700 Michael Scott Martin Department ofHistory Central Michigan University In many ways, the Netherlands set the pace for European economic growth in the fifteenth through the eighteenth centuries. The Dutch herring fishing industry was critical to this modern economic progress. A comparative study of this enterprise to the lean manufacturing tool of constraints management provides insight into how the Dutch dominated this lucrative industry. Improvements by Dutch fishing interests in technology, practice, procedures and quality control were consistent with the constraints management model. English and Scottish competitors failed to identify these constraints and thus, failed to challenge Dutch operators. The Dutch fishing industry practiced and understood constraints management and used it to monopolize the export herring marketfor three centuries. The Netherlands was at the vanguard of modern economic development from 1400 to 1700. Dominating this growth and sophistication was the herring fishery, and the Dutch were clearly cognizant of the importance of this industry. A proclamation in 1615 declared, “The great fishing and catching of herrings is the chiefest trade and principal gold-mine of these United Countries.” The market for herring was enormous and it was monopolized by the Dutch for nearly 300 years. The Baltic and Catholic countries provided huge demand for salted fish.
