Munis Entomology & Zoology, 13 (2): 702-717] ABSTRACT: Two sympatric species of loaches, Barbatula cf. altayensis Zhu, 1992 and B. karabanowi Prokofiev, 2018, occur in the upper reaches of the river Bulgan in Mongolia. They represent the only fish taxa found in the studied part of the river. Significant morphological differences between these species support their apparent belonging to the different phyletic lineages. Barbatula cf. altayensis is characterized by the following combination of characters: nostrils closely set; lips furrowed, upper lip with medial indentation weak to absent, lower lip with medial lobes barely separated, furrowed, lateral lobes absent; scale cover well developed; broad head with muscular cheeks; 44–45 vertebrae; 89–105 lateral-line pores; pigmentation pattern consisting of transverse bars or isolated well spaced blotches. A set of peculiar features (mouth structure and position of nares, characters of sexual dimorphism, strong ossification of the otic portion of the cephalic laterosensory system) supposes an isolated position of B. altayensis within the genus. The second species, B. karabanowi, belongs to the “blunt-snouted” complex of species related to B. -

Iranian Journal of Fisheries Sciences 12(3) 592-604 2013 ___________________________________________________________________________ Analysis of mitochondrial DNA sequences of Turcinoemacheilus genus (Nemacheilidae; Cypriniformes) in Iran Jamshidi S. 1*, Abdoli A.2, Sherafatian M.3, Golzarianpour K.4 Received: February 2012 Accepted: January 2013 Abstract Members of Nemacheilidae Family, Turcinoemacheilus genus were subjected to molecular phylogenetic analysis in this study. This genus was reported in 2009 to inhabit in Karoon River drainage, in contrary to previous assumption that it was the endemic species in the Basin of Tigris River. It was sampled from three stations placed in different tributaries in Karoon drainage and evaluated to understand the molecular phylogenetic relationships of Turcinoemacheilus in Iran. The mitochondrial cytochrome b gene (cyt b) and control region were used to infer phylogenetic relationships. PCR amplification of control region was not carried out successfully, possibly due to the high divergence of this sequence in the studied genus. The amplified fragments of cyt b were sequenced then analyzed by the use of phylogenetic software. Only one divergent position was seen in all three samples stations located in amino acid position 365. GTR and p-distances of cytochrome b gene for T. kosswigi computed from different stations of running water in Karoon drainage showed these samples belong to different populations and fall in intraspecific differences. In this study, examination of the molecular phylogeny using Bayesian analysis, maximum parsimony or neighbor-joining define the phylogentics of Turcinoemacheilus genus as a monophyletic clade which is sister-clade of Nemacheilus and Schistura genera. This report is the first report of Turcinoemacheilus molecular data and could describe molecular phylogeny of this genus in loaches. -

The pool is connected to the Wujiang River drainage. Triplophysa wulongensis differs from its congeners by the fol- lowing combination of characters: eyes present, caudal fin with 18 branched rays; posterior chamber of the air bladder degenerate; stomach U-shaped; intestine without bends or loops immediately posterior to stomach; body smooth and scaleless, and lateral line complete. The mitochondrial cytochromeb sequence differs from those of other published sequences of species of Triplophysa by 14.9–24.9% in K2P distance. -

This analysis of 67 nemacheilid species, including 28 species of Schistura, provides the most comprehen- sive phylogeny of Nemacheilidae to date. In the phylogenetic tree for the combined data set, species of Schistura clustered in three clades. -

Laffan A thesis in fulfilment of the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy School of Biological Earth and Environmental Sciences Faculty of Science 1 February 2020 2 3 4 5 Tiwaripotamon sp., a miniature undescribed species from the karstic forests of Guangxi, China. 6 Preface This thesis is a compilation of my works during the course of my PhD candidature, conducted under the guidance of my supervisors Malte C. Ebach, Shane T. Ahyong and Shawn W. Laffan. It consists of one introductory chapter which is partly derived from a book chapter (Chapter 1), six published research papers (Chapters 2-7) and a summary chapter (Chapter 8). The research paper chapters are presented as they would appear in a journal except the acknowledgements and references have been moved to the start and end of the thesis, respectively. The introduction of the research paper in chapter 8 has been moved under chapter 1. I conceptualized the research, conducted field collections, gathered data, performed analyses, wrote the manuscripts and prepared the tables and figures.
