Some Generalizations of Satoh's Tube
SOME GENERALIZATIONS OF SATOH'S TUBE MAP BLAKE K. WINTER Abstract. Satoh has defined a map from virtual knots to ribbon surfaces embedded in S4. Herein, we generalize this map to virtual m-links, and use this to construct generalizations of welded and extended welded knots to higher dimensions. This also allows us to construct two new geometric pictures of virtual m-links, including 1-links. 1. Introduction In [13], Satoh defined a map from virtual link diagrams to ribbon surfaces knotted in S4 or R4. This map, which he called T ube, preserves the knot group and the knot quandle (although not the longitude). Furthermore, Satoh showed that if K =∼ K0 as virtual knots, T ube(K) is isotopic to T ube(K0). In fact, we can make a stronger statement: if K and K0 are equivalent under what Satoh called w- equivalence, then T ube(K) is isotopic to T ube(K0) via a stable equivalence of ribbon links without band slides. For virtual links, w-equivalence is the same as welded equivalence, explained below. In addition to virtual links, Satoh also defined virtual arc diagrams and defined the T ube map on such diagrams. On the other hand, in [15, 14], the notion of virtual knots was extended to arbitrary dimensions, building on the geometric description of virtual knots given by Kuperberg, [7]. It is therefore natural to ask whether Satoh's idea for the T ube map can be generalized into higher dimensions, as well as inquiring into a generalization of the virtual arc diagrams to higher dimensions. -

A GEOMETRIC INVARIANT OF VIRTUAL n-LINKS BLAKE K. WINTER Abstract. For a virtual n-link K, we define a new virtual link VD(K), which is invariant under virtual equivalence of K. The Dehn space of VD(K), which we denote by DD(K), therefore has a homotopy type which is an invariant of K. We show that the quandle and even the fundamental group of this space are able to detect the virtual trefoil. We also consider applications to higher-dimensional virtual links. 1. Introduction Virtual links were introduced by Kauffman in [8], as a generalization of classical knot theory. They were given a geometric interpretation by Kuper- berg in [10]. Building on Kuperberg's ideas, virtual n-links were defined in [16]. Here, we define some new invariants for virtual links, and demonstrate their power by using them to distinguish the virtual trefoil from the unknot, which cannot be done using the ordinary group or quandle. Although these knots can be distinguished by means of other invariants, such as biquandles, there are two advantages to the approach used herein: first, our approach to defining these invariants is purely geometric, whereas the biquandle is en- tirely combinatorial. Being geometric, these invariants are easy to generalize to higher dimensions. Second, biquandles are rather complicated algebraic objects. Our invariants are spaces up to homotopy type, with their ordinary quandles and fundamental groups. These are somewhat simpler to work with than biquandles. The paper is organized as follows. We will briefly review the notion of a virtual link, then the notion of the Dehn space of a virtual link. -
Fibered Ribbon Disks
FIBERED RIBBON DISKS KYLE LARSON AND JEFFREY MEIER Abstract. We study the relationship between fibered ribbon 1{knots and fibered ribbon 2{knots by studying fibered slice disks with handlebody fibers. We give a characterization of fibered homotopy-ribbon disks and give analogues of the Stallings twist for fibered disks and 2{knots. As an application, we produce infinite families of distinct homotopy-ribbon disks with homotopy equivalent exteriors, with potential relevance to the Slice-Ribbon Conjecture. We show that any fibered ribbon 2{ knot can be obtained by doubling infinitely many different slice disks (sometimes in different contractible 4{manifolds). Finally, we illustrate these ideas for the examples arising from spinning fibered 1{knots. 1. Introduction A knot K is fibered if its complement fibers over the circle (with the fibration well-behaved near K). Fibered knots have a long and rich history of study (for both classical knots and higher-dimensional knots). In the classical case, a theorem of Stallings ([Sta62], see also [Neu63]) states that a knot is fibered if and only if its group has a finitely generated commutator subgroup. Stallings [Sta78] also gave a method to produce new fibered knots from old ones by twisting along a fiber, and Harer [Har82] showed that this twisting operation and a type of plumbing is sufficient to generate all fibered knots in S3. Another special class of knots are slice knots. A knot K in S3 is slice if it bounds a smoothly embedded disk in B4 (and more generally an n{knot in Sn+2 is slice if it bounds a disk in Bn+3). -

We investigate two “categorified” braid conjugacy class invariants, one coming from Khovanov homology and the other from Heegaard Floer ho- mology. We prove that each yields a solution to the word problem but not the conjugacy problem in the braid group. In particular, our proof in the Khovanov case is completely combinatorial. 1. Introduction Recall that the n-strand braid group Bn admits the presentation σiσj = σj σi if |i − j|≥2, Bn = σ1,...,σn−1 , σiσj σi = σjσiσj if |i − j| =1 where σi corresponds to a positive half twist between the ith and (i + 1)st strands. We prove necessary and sufficient conditions for an arbitrary in- variant of braids with m double points to be the “mth derivative” of a braid invariant. We show that the “primary obstruction to integration” is the only obstruction. This gives a slight generalization of the existence theorem for Vassiliev invariants of braids. We give a direct proof by induction on m which works for invariants with values in any abelian group. We find that to prove our theorem, we must show that every relation among four-term relations satisfies a certain geometric condition. To find the relations among relations we show that H1 of a variant of Kontsevich’s graph complex vanishes. We discuss related open questions for invariants of links and other things. 1. Introduction 1.1. The mystery. From a certain point of view, it is quite surprising that the Vassiliev link invariants exist, because the “primary obstruction” to constructing them is the only obstruction, for no clear topological reason. The idea of Vassiliev invariants is to define a “differentiation” map from link invariants to invariants of “singular links”, start with invariants of singular links, and “integrate them” to construct link invariants. A singular link is an immersion S1 S3 with m double points (at which the two tangent vectors are not n → parallel) and no other singularities. Let Lm denote the free Z-module generated by isotopy` classes of singular links with m double points. -
Milnor Invariants of String Links, Trivalent Trees, and Configuration Space Integrals
MILNOR INVARIANTS OF STRING LINKS, TRIVALENT TREES, AND CONFIGURATION SPACE INTEGRALS ROBIN KOYTCHEFF AND ISMAR VOLIC´ Abstract. We study configuration space integral formulas for Milnor's homotopy link invari- ants, showing that they are in correspondence with certain linear combinations of trivalent trees. Our proof is essentially a combinatorial analysis of a certain space of trivalent \homotopy link diagrams" which corresponds to all finite type homotopy link invariants via configuration space integrals. An important ingredient is the fact that configuration space integrals take the shuffle product of diagrams to the product of invariants. We ultimately deduce a partial recipe for writing explicit integral formulas for products of Milnor invariants from trivalent forests. Introduction Braid groups were introduced by Emil Artin in 1925, and by now play a role in various parts of mathematics including knot theory, low dimensional topology, and public key cryptography. Expanding from the Artin presentation of braids we now deal with braids defined on general manifolds as in [3] as well as several of Birman' other works. 1 Preliminaries We begin by laying the groundwork for the Artinian version of the braid group. While braids can be dealt with using a number of different representations and levels of abstraction we will confine ourselves to what can be called the geometric braid groups. 3 2 2 Let E denote Euclidean 3-space, and let E0 and E1 be the parallel planes with z- coordinates 0 and 1 respectively. Knot Cobordisms, Bridge Index, and Torsion in Floer Homology
KNOT COBORDISMS, BRIDGE INDEX, AND TORSION IN FLOER HOMOLOGY ANDRAS´ JUHASZ,´ MAGGIE MILLER AND IAN ZEMKE Abstract. Given a connected cobordism between two knots in the 3-sphere, our main result is an inequality involving torsion orders of the knot Floer homology of the knots, and the number of local maxima and the genus of the cobordism. This has several topological applications: The torsion order gives lower bounds on the bridge index and the band-unlinking number of a knot, the fusion number of a ribbon knot, and the number of minima appearing in a slice disk of a knot. It also gives a lower bound on the number of bands appearing in a ribbon concordance between two knots. Our bounds on the bridge index and fusion number are sharp for Tp;q and Tp;q#T p;q, respectively. We also show that the bridge index of Tp;q is minimal within its concordance class. The torsion order bounds a refinement of the cobordism distance on knots, which is a metric. As a special case, we can bound the number of band moves required to get from one knot to the other. We show knot Floer homology also gives a lower bound on Sarkar's ribbon distance, and exhibit examples of ribbon knots with arbitrarily large ribbon distance from the unknot. 1. Introduction The slice-ribbon conjecture is one of the key open problems in knot theory. It states that every slice knot is ribbon; i.e., admits a slice disk on which the radial function of the 4-ball induces no local maxima. -

Geometric and Topological Prerequisites Any picture of the braid groups necessarily follows only after one has discussed the necessary prerequisites from geometry and topology. We begin by discussing what is meant by Configuration space.
