We also understand that you are particularly aware of the need for manpower and equipment to be operated in a sensitive and considerate way with careful consideration being given to the transit to the graveside and the immediate vicinity of graves. Approach We have a dedicated team maintaining the four large cemeteries in Oxford as well as managing the burial process through a highly emotional time for families and friends. Our work is carried out by qualified, experienced and trustworthy staff, all of whom are trained to Institute of Cemetery & Crematorium Management (ICCM) standards. Our Cemeteries Team are based at Cutteslowe Park Depot in North Oxford, only a few miles from South Hinksey, and together they have decades of experience covering a wide range of burial services, including interments, exhumations and memorial inspection programmes, as well as the grounds maintenance of large cemeteries and closed churchyards across Oxford. Oxford City Council is a Corporate Member of the ICCM. We have adopted the Charter for the Bereaved from the Institute and have achieved Bronze Standard in the assessment programme; consequently we take great care in our customer service when dealing with families and friends of the deceased. Oxford City Council as a whole takes customer service very seriously and the Council holds the Customer Service Excellence Gold Standard. -

Enough is Enough! Stop Oxford Flooding Caveat and disclaimer: this article is written in good faith as our best understanding at the time of writing, March 2014. However very little is decided for sure, and things can and will change, the scheme may never even happen, so nothing said here should be taken as gospel or relied on for taking important decisions. ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- The Oxford Flood Alliance has been campaigning since 2007 to reduce Oxford’s flood risk. We have had real success but have always known that more would need to be done. Here are the reasons why we strongly support the proposed “Western Conveyance” What follows is based on our best understanding at present. There are several years of planning ahead before work on the ground begins. Something needs to be done to reduce Oxford’s flooding Oxford has suffered increasingly frequent flooding in recent years, a problem which is only likely to increase in future. There are serious effects on individuals, families, businesses, the universities, railways and roads, and the sewerage system. Oxford and Oxfordshire’s economy is damaged, along with its reputation as a place to work and to do business. Action needs to be taken to rid Oxford of this threat once and for all. We support the proposed Western Conveyance (also known as the Oxford Relief River, ORR). This is a scheme devised by the Environment Agency and the subject of public consultation in 2009. If various bodies can together in partnership raise the necessary £123 million, it is likely to be given the go ahead next month. -

Walking back in Time: Conservation in Berkshire, Buckinghamshire and Oxfordshire, 1942-65, from the Diaries of Charles Elton K. J. Kirby . Summary The diaries of Charles Elton, a father of community ecology, give details of over 300 visits in the counties of Berkshire, Buckinghamshire and Oxfordshire between 1940 and 1965 (excluding those made to Wytham Woods near Oxford that are reported separately). The entries illustrate the changes that took place in the countryside in the post-war period; the idiosyncrasies of protected site selection at that time; and some of the management challenges that had to be overcome. Though inevitably a partial record they provide insights relevant to modern conservation. Modern conservationists should ensure that at least the equivalent record is passed on to future generations. Introduction Charles S. Elton, FRS, CBE (1900-1991) was one of the fathers of community ecology (Elton 1966) and the first editor of the Journal of Animal Ecology. He created and directed the Bureau of Animal Population from 1932 until his retirement in 1965 (Crowcroft 1991). The Bureau was absorbed into the Department of Zoology and Elton continued to have an office there for some years after his retirement. He was also a key figure in the early years of the Nature Conservancy which was set up in 1949, the forerunner of Natural England and the other statutory conservation agencies, and was involved in discussions on which sites should be become reserves or Sites of Special Scientific Interest (SSSIs). Samuel Lipscomb Seckham By PETER HOWELL l TIL recently the name of Samuel Lipscomb Seckham was fairly widely U known in Oxford as that of the architect of Park Town. A few other facts, such as that he was City Surveyor, were known to the cognoscenti. No-one, however, had been able to discover anything significant about his background, let alone what happened to him after he built the Oxford Corn Exchange in 1861-2. In '970 a fortunate chance led to the establishment of contact with Dr. Ann Silver, a great-granddaughter of Seckham, and as a result it has been po ible to piece together the outline ofhis varied career.' He was born on 25 October ,827,' He took his names from his grandparents, Samuel Seckham (1761-1820) and Susan Lipscomb (d. 18'5 aged 48).3 His father, William ('797-,859), kept livery stables at 20 Magdalen Street, Oxford,. and prospered sufficiently to retire and farm at Kidlington.5 The family came from Devon, where it is aid that Seccombes have occupied Seccombe Farm at Germans week, near Okehampton, since Saxon limes. Seccombes are still living there, farming. It is thought that Seckllam is the earlier spelling, but tombstones at Germansweek show several different versions. 6 It is not known how the family reached Oxford, but Samuel Lipscomb Seckham's great-grandmother Elizabeth was buried at St. Mary Magdalen in 1805.7 His mother was Harriett Wickens (1800-1859). OXFORDSHIRE COUNTY COUNCIL (CITY OF OXFORD AND NORTH HINKSEY) (BUS LANES, CYCLE LANES AND TRAFFIC MANAGEMENT) (VARIATION NO.12*) ORDER 20** NOTICE IS HEREBY GIVEN that Oxfordshire County Council proposes to make the above order under the Road Traffic Regulation Act 1984 and all other enabling powers. The order will (further) amend the Oxfordshire County Council (City of Oxford and North Hinksey) (Bus Lanes, Cycle Lanes and Traffic Management) Order 2006. This proposal is further to the `Access to Headington` project in respect of improving the through flow of traffic and access to amenities. The plan is to introduce a Bus Lane on the eastbound only lane of Roosevelt Drive between its junctions with the Old Road Campus and Churchill Drive, allowing use by Buses only between 3pm and 6pm on Mondays to Fridays. During this time all motor vehicles other than buses and emergency vehicles will be prohibited. Traffic wishing to leave the hospital grounds during the operational times of the Bus Lane will exit westwards to the Old Road/Warneford Lane junction. There will be enforcement by traffic cameras.
