LAMORINDA WEEKLY | "Star Trek Into Darkness" Published May 22nd, 2013 "Star Trek Into Darkness" By Derek Zemrak One of the most famous quotes in the Star Trek legacy is "Where no man has gone before!" This film is a huge undertaking for any director of the Star Trek franchise that has created more than 700 television shows and 12 movies. At first glance into the galaxy, I would say man has gone everywhere, but surprisingly director J.J. Abrams, who directed the first reboot in 2009, delivers a detailed storyline and a movie that is exhilarating to watch on the big screen. Moviegoers will be on the edge of their seats as they experience a brilliantly shot film, while they cheer on the Enterprise crew to succeed in battle against the evil villain of mass destruction. Once again Chris Pine ("Bottle Shock," "Rise of the Guardians") returns as Captain Kirk and Zachary Quinto ("Margin Call," "Heroes," "American Horror Story") portrays Spock. As with the cult popular television series, it is the ensemble cast that makes it all work, with Zoe Saldana ("Avatar") as Uhura, Karl Urban ("The Lord of the Rings") as Bones, Simon Pegg ("Ice Age") as Scotty, and John Cho From left: Zachary Quinto is Spock and Chris Pine is ("Harold & Kumar") as Sulu. It should be noted that not one Kirk in "Star Trek Into Darkness" from Paramount of these cast members is a scene hog like William Shatner Pictures and Skydance Productions. American Archivist Reviews Date posted: May 23, 2019 http://reviews.americanarchivist.org “Still So Much to Learn”: Star Trek and the Archives Reviewed by Samantha Cross, CallisonRTKL, Inc. The Star Trek franchise is not an easy topic to pare down considering its more than 50 years worth of canonical television, movies, comics, novels, and supplemental material to sift through. Academically speaking, there’s no shortage of scholarly papers addressing issues of race, gender, sexuality, technology, ethics, and morality as depicted in all these mediums.1 And that’s just the tip of the iceberg when it comes to how Star Trek has been and will continue to be examined as each generation comes to understand the franchise within the context of their reality. The impact and influence of Gene Rodenberry’s creation are vast, and its place in popular culture endures. What started as a hopeful idea of a diverse and prosperous future has become a bold statement of equality across all aspects of identity even if it fumbles the message from time to time. Viewers, for the most part, tune in to get a glimpse of an aspirational future where humans have managed not to destroy one another; where the voyages of starships like the Enterprise, Voyager, and Discovery bring a sense of curiosity, empathy, and adventure as their crews journey into the unknown. So, where do archives fit into the final frontier? Should you endeavor to do an online search for anything related to Star Trek, I’d advise you to hunker down and settle in especially if your interest lies in a niche topic within the Trek universe.

The movement fromLoser to Alliance constitutes a metanarrative endemic to nerd culture. As the “alien half-breed” of the original series, Spock inhabits the paradoxical role of the superior degenerate, a corruption of pure blood from an advanced civilization. At the same time, he is the machine, the personification of mathematical accuracy, redeemed from his isolation by friendship with the crew of the Enterprise. The ship thereby becomes a microcosm of the United Federation of Planets, a galactic and democratic state. Spock serves as the lynchpin of Trek’s cosmopolitan project, revaluing the nerd as the hero of trans-species friendship. By virtue of this trajectory, Spock invites resistance from the proponents of eugenics, whose avatar is Khan Noonian Singh, the mortal foe of the Enterprise. Khan stands for the tyranny of pure blood, and by rejecting him, Trek grounds its cosmopolitics in egalitarian pluralism, which gradually extends to Hortas and whales, Klingons and cyborgs.

  • Live in Concert at the Royal Albert Hall
News by David Sztypuljak - Jun 2, 2014 0 Facebook 0 Twitter 0 Google+ 0 Stumble 0 Reddit Total: 0 Star Trek: Into Darkness is the second movie in the J.J. Abrams rebooted version of the Gene Roddenberry sci-fi series and it was our privilege to go along to the Saturday evening performance of Star Trek: Live in Concert. What made the performance ever greater was the event took place at the world famous Royal Albert Hall in London, and was performed by the 21st Century Symphony Orchestra. The group were formed in 1999 by conductor Ludwig Wicki who took control of his musicians performing the score written by Michael Giacchino. The Orchestra have worked previously on the likes of Lord of the Rings, Star Trek, and the James Bond film series. Giacchino was obviously extremely honoured to have his work played at this fantastic venue and filmed everyone saying hello to his kids back in the states (you can see it in the video below). The film score for Star Trek and Star Trek Into Darkness are just breathtaking, so watching and listening to the orchestra perform was magical. For those who’ve never been before, the film is shown on a huge screen above the orchestra and choir but is slightly silenced with the subtitles on screen so that the orchestra can be heard overall. It’s a very strange experience being completely immersed by such an amazing orchestra with the magnificent acoustics that the Albert Hall gives. Sometimes you’ll find yourself look at the screening then looking down to be reminded that everything you’re hearing is happening live.
