Economic Benefits 2014 Grant & Donation Summary

An October 2013 study by The Trust for Public Land titled The Economic Benefits of Cleveland 2014 Totals Metroparks found that Cleveland Metroparks generates over $855 million annually to the local economy, Foundations $7,734,080 providing significant economic benefits to the region. Cleveland Metroparks properties have been demonstrated to add a minimum of 5% premium to the market value of neighboring properties. 2014 Reduced Municipal Costs - Conservation of private property, such as Cleveland Metroparks lands, results Total: $19,448,215 in reduced costs to local governments and other public agencies. This is due to minimizing or eliminating the need for public safety, infrastructure, extensions, and other city services which would be required if the property remained in private ownership and was potentially developed. Reduced Health Care Costs - Independent research shows that park use translates into increased physical activity, resulting in medical cost savings. The Economic Benefits of Cleveland Metroparks study found that approximately 144,000 adult residents of Cuyahoga County engage in physical activity at a level sufficient to generate measurable health benefits, yielding annual health care cost savings of $59.5 million. The report also notes that “For over a decade, research has sug- gested that access to parks can help people increase their level of physical activity.” Reduced Costs Associated with Pollution - Vegetated parklands contribute to decreases in costs associated with pollution because vegetation improves air quality. Air pollution injures human health, but trees and shrubs remove pollutants from the air. The Economic Benefits of Cleveland Metroparks study estimated the value of air pollution removal by urban trees, specific to Cleveland Metroparks, using a U.S. Forest Service model. Accounting for factors in location, pollution level and Foundations Corporate Federal Programs State of Ohio Programs flow, and average tree canopy cover of Cleveland Metroparks, it was found that Cleveland Metroparks parks provide an estimated $14.4 million in air pollution removal each year. Other Grant Programs Individual Donations Land Donations Value Local and Regional Tourism - The Economic Benefits of Cleveland Metroparks study noted that tourism is one of Cuyahoga County’s largest industries, producing $6.66 billion in sales annually. Approximately 11% of visitors to Cuyahoga County come for the purpose of visiting the outdoors, such as parks, trails, and beaches. These visitors spend $733 million annually in the local economy and generate $50.5 million in state and local taxes. Stormwater Management - Natural areas reduce stormwater management costs by capturing precipitation and reducing stormwater flows. Cleveland Metroparks parklands lower stormwater management costs by $5.12 million annually. This figure was calculated by comparing the amount of pervious surface in the parks versus the amount of pervious surface in non-park lands in Cuyahoga County.
