Boundaries: The Washington Bridge Landmark is encompassed by a line running southward parallel with the eastern curb line of Amsterdam Avenue; a line running eastward which is the extension of the southern curb line of West 181st Street to the point where it crosses Undercliff Avenue; a line running northward parallel with the eastern curb line of Undercliff Avenue; a line running westward from Undercliff Avenue which intersects with the extension of the northern curb lin~ of West 181st Street, to_t~~ point of beginning. Phasing the Recommendations – A Blueprint for the Near Future 27 Compiled Appendices Following 31 EXECUTIVE SUMMARY The Jersey City Local Bus Study was written in response to concerns that portions of the Jersey City local bus network were collapsing as private carriers cut back or eliminated service in its entirety. NJ TRANSIT, the City of Jersey City, the County of Hudson, and the North Jersey Transportation Planning Authority funded the work effort. It was prepared by the Bus Service Planning staff at NJ TRANSIT with input from a Technical Advisory Committee composed of individuals representing the funding agencies. The focus of the study is on short-term improvements primarily in Jersey City that need to be implemented as resources such as operating funds and equipment become available. This report describes the existing bus service in Hudson County and presents short- term recommendations for changes and improvements to the local bus system, both in terms of general and systemic issues as well as specific route-by-route actions. More than three dozen action items were identified to improve existing bus operations. These items range from route-specific service adjustments to providing for more ticket and pass sales outlets either by vendors or the installation of ticket vending machines (TVMs). -

City street are clogged with taxi’s and for-hire vehicles, subway platforms are packed with straphangers waiting for delayed trains and buses barely travel faster than pedestrians. The bureaucracy of City and State government in the region causes piecemeal improvements which do not keep up with the state of disrepair. Bus service is particularly poor, moving at rates incomparable with the rest of the country. New York has recently made successful efforts at improving bus speeds, but only so much can be done amidst a city of gridlock. Bus systems around the world faced similar challenges and successfully implemented improvements. A toolbox of near-immediate and long- term options are at New York’s disposal dealing directly with bus service as well indirect causes of poor bus service. The failing subway system has prompted public discussion concerning bus service. A significant cause of poor service in New York is congestion. A number of measures are capable of improving congestion and consequently, bus service. Due to the city’s limited capacity at implementing short-term solutions, the most highly problematic routes should receive priority. Routes with slow speeds, high rates of bunching and high ridership are concentrated in Manhattan and Downtown Brooklyn which also cater to the most subway riders. -

kelly UW-L Journal of Undergraduate Research XIII (2010) Mount Vernon Distillery Project: Of Workers and Race Elizabeth Kelly Faculty Sponsors: Timothy McAndrews and David Anderson, Department of Sociology and Archaeology ABSTRACT The domestic artifacts of the Mount Vernon distillery site offer data on the lives of white workers. In comparing the domestic glass and ceramic artifacts of the distillery with comparable glass and ceramic data found at the slave site House for Families, the similarities and differences between the two groups can be seen. The artifact comparison may make it possible to determine if slave workers lived at the distillery along with the white workers. The artifact comparison showed that slaves and white workers were similar in being limited by their means. The existence of slave workers living at the distillery could not be determined at this time; however, potential areas for future analysis were presented. INTRODUCTION Historical archaeology is a discipline that has seen a shift in its focus over the years. The original interest of historical archaeology lay with the leaders of America. Archaeologists and historians studied and researched primarily the men who shaped and developed America. During the Civil Rights movement and other social movements of the 60's and 70's, historical archaeologists changed their focus. While there is still a strong interest in significant historical figures, there is a strong interest in historical archaeology concerning women, children, and slaves. This grouping had previously been neglected but was now the forefront of interest. Despite this focus on the less powerful of society, I have still found there to be a significant gap in research.
