NAVAJO NATION PRESIDENT JONATHAN NEZ Navajo Nation President Jonathan Nez was born in Tuba City, Arizona and raised in Shonto, Arizona on the Navajo Nation. He began his current term as President of the Navajo Nation on January 15, 2019 along with Vice President Myron Lizer. Since taking office, the Nez-Lizer Administration continues to advocate and support the priorities of the Navajo people, based on numerous meetings that took place in over 70 Navajo communities across the Navajo Nation. President Nez has two children with his wife, Phefelia Nez. He is the son of John H. Nez and Mabel H. Nez. His grandfather, H.T. Donald, was the former Navajo Nation Council Delegate for Shonto Chapter, and his grandmother was Mae Donald from Shonto. President Nez is of the Áshįįhí Clan (Salt People) and born for the Ta’neeszahnii Clan (Tangle clan). His maternal grandfather’s clan is Tódích’íi’nii Clan (Bitter Water Clan) and his paternal grandfather’s clan is the Táchii’nii Clan (Red-Running-Into-The-Water Clan). Before his presidency, he served as Vice President of the Navajo Nation from 2015 to January 2019. He has also served as the Shonto Chapter Vice President, as a member of the Navajo Nation Council representing the chapters of Shonto, Oljato, Tsah Bi Kin and Navajo Mountain, and as a member of the Navajo County Board of Supervisors for District 1 in Arizona. President Nez holds a Bachelor of Science degree in Political Science and a Masters of Public Administration, both from Northern Arizona University. .

WINDOW ROCK, Ariz. – Navajo Nation President Jonathan Nez and Vice President Myron Lizer presented the State of the Navajo Nation Address virtually to the 24th Navajo Nation Council on Monday, during the opening day of the Spring Council Session. At the start of the address, President Nez took time to honor and remember former Council Delegate Nelson S. BeGaye who passed away on April 15 at the age 69, following a long battle with cancer, and former Navajo Nation President Albert Hale who passed away on February 2 due to complications from COVID-19. He then turned his focus to the Navajo Nation’s fight against COVID-19 and the variants. “On March 30th, we announced the first confirmed case of the B.1.1.7 variant, also known as the U.K. variant, which was identified in the western portion of our Nation. One week later, the B.1.429 variant known as the California variant was identified in the Chinle Service Unit, and most recently, in the Gallup Service Unit and Shiprock Service Unit. Despite these new challenges, our Navajo people have managed to keep our numbers of new COVID-19 infections relatively low. This is in large part due to the commitment of our health care workers who have worked non-stop to administer the COVID-19 vaccines since December,” said President Nez.

NAVAJO NATION VICE PRESIDENT JONATHAN M. NEZ Jonathan Nez currently serves as the Vice-President of the Navajo Nation. He was born on the Navajo reservation in Tuba City, Arizona and raised in Shonto, Arizona. Vice President Nez is married to Phefelia Herbert-Nez and they have two children, Christopher and Alexander. He is the son of John H. Nez and Mabel H. Nez. His grandfather, H.T. Donald, was the former Navajo Nation Council Delegate for Shonto Chapter, and his grandmother was Mae Donald from Shonto. In regards to his Navajo clans, Vice President Nez is of the Áshįįhí Clan (Salt People) and born for the Ta’neeszahnii Clan (Tangle clan). His maternal grandfather’s clan is Tódích’íi’nii Clan (Bitter Water Clan) and his paternal grandfather’s clan is the Táchii’nii Clan (Red-Running-Into-The-Water Clan). Vice President Nez began his Navajo political career after being elected as Shonto Chapter Vice President. He was later elected to serve three terms as a Navajo Nation Council Delegate, representing the chapters of Shonto, Oljato, Tsah Bi Kin and Navajo Mountain. Vice President Nez was also elected as a Navajo County Board of Supervisor for District 1 and served two terms. Vice President Nez’s term on the board of supervisors was cut short when he was asked to be a running mate to Navajo Nation President Russell Begaye. On April 21, 2015, the Navajo people elected President Begaye and Vice President Nez to be their leaders for the next four years. With more than 10 years of dedicated public service, Vice President Nez took the oath of Navajo office along with President Begaye on May 12, 2015.

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE July 19, 2021 President Nez and Vice President Lizer deliver the State of the Navajo Nation Address WINDOW ROCK, Ariz. – Navajo Nation President Jonathan Nez and Vice President Myron Lizer presented the State of the Navajo Nation Address virtually to the 24th Navajo Nation Council on Monday, during the opening day of the Summer Council Session. In regards to the ongoing drought, President Nez said he is very thanKful for the moisture that the Navajo Nation has received recently and also assured the public that the Navajo Nation is deploying resources and personnel to repair windmills and earthen dams, and also to help rescue feral horses and other livestocK by providing water and other necessities. President Nez also recognized and thanked the Navajo people, first responders, and many others for their commitment to complying with the Navajo Nation public health emergency orders. He also urged the public to get fully vaccinated for COVID-19 and to continue wearing masks, due to the growing concerns and spread of the Delta variant across the country. “Today, the Delta variant continues to spread throughout the country and within our own communities. As of last week, there were 11 confirmed cases of the Delta variant within the Navajo Nation. While the variants continue to pose a threat everywhere, the Navajo Nation is proud to have the highest vaccination rate anywhere in the country! We are now closer than ever to achieving community immunity – or herd immunity – with nearly 70% of the eligible population fully vaccinated on the Navajo Nation.

WINDOW ROCK, Ariz. – Navajo Nation President Jonathan Nez and Vice President Myron Lizer were joined by Navajo business owners, members of the 24th Navajo Nation Council, Miss Navajo Nation Shaandiin Parrish, and Division Directors at Navajo Veterans Memorial Park on Tuesday, as they signed Resolution CJN-36-21 into law, which lifts several COVID-19 restrictions that will allow Navajo Nation parks to reopen at 50-percent capacity with safety protocols in place as early as Thursday, and also allow schools to eventually reopen under a required safety plan. The Navajo Department of Health will issue a new Public Health Emergency Order on Wednesday, outlining safety protocols and requirements for reopening. The mask mandate remains in effect for the entire Navajo Nation. “Today’s signing of this resolution signifies the strength and resilience of the Navajo people throughout this COVID-19 pandemic. Our gating measures and data show a consistent downward trend in new cases and deaths related to COVID-19, and we have a large majority of our Navajo Nation residents fully vaccinated.
