  • Status of the Glasgow Apollo Theatre (1973-85)
You had to be there? Reflections on the ‘legendary’ status of the Glasgow Apollo theatre (1973-85) Kenneth Forbes BA, M.Litt Submitted in fulfilment of the requirements for the Degree of Doctor of Philosophy School of Culture and Creative Arts College of Arts University of Glasgow April 2015 Abstract The ephemeral nature of live music can, from some perspectives, serve to place limitations on its lasting socio-cultural impact. This thesis addresses such claims by analysing the enduring appeal of a ‘legendary’ venue, the Glasgow Apollo (1973-85), where a series of momentous live music moments from several decades ago continue to be celebrated. In order to accomplish this, the study primarily uses semi-structured and focus group interviews to explore the reminiscences of the audience and artists who shared live music experiences at the venue. Through the application of Actor Network Theory, the work focuses on the influence that actors such as locality, technology, industry and music genre held over these encounters, as well as the manner in which the collective memories of the events in question have subsequently shaped their cultural value. The study first establishes the foundation for Glasgow’s cultural traditions, which thereafter helped to shape the concert experiences at the Apollo. It then follows the actors through, and beyond, the period of the venue’s tenure, to argue that the Apollo ‘legend’ lingers due to the manner in which these live experiences have been collectively framed within several of the platforms dedicated to the

  • 'Invicta' – the Enid
‘Invicta’ – The Enid The Enid are a slightly strange Progressive rock group that has been dominated for a very long time by Robert John Godfrey, who started the band up in the 70's. Robert is a classically trained pianist. He is extremely talented and seems to be particularly talented at producing this ‘British’ sound that incorporates brass band samples with strings in an almost ‘Elgar’ way. Sometimes, so pompous that it could be a real turn off. In their first album (Which I think is fabulous), he includes a piece that is so like Rachmaninov but played electronically, it’s quite amazing. Their first ever album is called, ‘In the Region of the Summer Stars’. It’s a really nice album although the recording quality veers on the edge of nasty at times. It’s from 1976. Quite early album but full of lovely moments. Their albums are variable in quality imo, but one thing I have felt is Robert's domination for years on the sound of all of their albums. He has stuck with the same samples/sounds through the years which gave them their unique type of sound which some love and others hate. Dave (The Amazing Wilf) has coined it - like Marmite, you either love it or hate it. My opinion is that 'marmite' is Robert John Godfrey and always has been for over 30 years. I have often found his over-romanticised approach a little annoying at times and Robert's vocal attempts have left me feeling underwhelmed to say the least. Their latest album is a move away imo from Robert's dominance.

Contemporary Music Review © 2000 OPA (Overseas Publishers Association) N.V. 2000, Vol. 18, Part 4, pp. 13-61 Published by license under Reprints available directly from the publisher the Harwood Academic Publishers imprint, Photocopying permitted by license only part of The Gordon and Breach Publishing Group. Printed in Malaysia. Echolyn and American Progressive Rock John Covach Beginning in the late 1960s and continuing through most of the 1970s, British progressive- rock groups developed a style of music that privileged long, complicated pieces, employing a wide variety of musical techniques and features drawn from classical music. While the leading progressive rock groups were British, progressive-rock groups also formed in the United States. This study provides an overview of American progressive-rock bands since 1966, examining how these musicians attempted to blend elements of European art music with rock music. Musical excerpts from Starcastle, Kansas, Happy the Man, However, and U-Totem and others are considered. Recent music from the Philadelphia-band progressive- rock quintet echolyn is placed in the context of 1970s and 80s American progressive rock; analysis of portions of A Suite for the Everyman (1992) and Letters (1995), informed in part by scores and sketches provided the author by the group, detail how echolyn employs art- music compositional techniques in a rock setting in a way that blends "symphonic-prog" and "avant-prog" approaches. KEYWORDS: Birdsongs of the Mesozoic, Christopher Buzby, Cartoon, Echolyn, Emerson, Lake & Palmer (ELP), Genesis, Gentle Giant, Happy the Man, Henry Cow, However, Jethro Tull, Kansas, Brett Kull, Soft Machine, Starcastle, Progressive Rock, U-Totem, Yes Introduction In the early and mid 1970s across the United States, it was almost imposs- ible to tune in an FM rock radio station without hearing the progressive- rock music of groups like Yes, Emerson, Lake & Palmer (ELP), and Jethro Tull.

© www.totalmusicmagazine.com www.totalmusicmagazine.com Interview with Robert John Godfrey Fans of The Enid, often referred to as The Enidi, are a tenacious and devoted bunch, and will need no introduction to a band that has boasted twenty plus members and endured numerous highs and lows over their thirty five year career, remaining steadfastly committed to, perhaps the most underrated of the progressive rock outfits to emerge in the mid seventies. Not that the only constant in the bands long career, Robert John Godfrey, will thank us for calling them a progressive act (more of which later), but as we believe the term can reasonably be accorded to any act that considers innovation to be a major motivational force (which could mean anyone from Magma to the Aphex Twin), we‟re going to stick with it regardless. We began, as always, by asking about his earliest musical memories and discovered, rather fantastically that Vera Lynn sang for his father and three other wounded soldiers in an officers ward of an Army Hospital at Kohima on the border between Burma and India in early 1943 and that his first musical experiences were actually in church RJG: “I sang in the choir as a boy from about the age of seven. I loved the sound of the organ and the wonderful mechanics of this king of instruments. We had a windup gramophone when I was still a toddler. I got given all sorts of classical records by relatives and friends of the family.” TotalMusic: Although he didn't take up the piano until twelve he nonetheless attended both the Royal College of Music and Royal Academy of Music, and from 1968 to 1971 Godfrey became the orchestral musical director with Barclay James Harvest making contributions to early recordings and helping establish their orchestral style.
